It was 3:30pm on my last day on the job as a programmer. I had handed everything off, cleaned everything up and had literally nothing remaining to do. But my manager refused to allow me to leave until 5pm. So I was sitting at my desk, feet up, reading a newspaper. Manager walks by and barks "Are we paying you to read a newspaper?". I said "Yes, you are", told him I had nothing left to do and reminded him that he wouldn't allow me to leave early. 20 minutes later I walk past his office and he's in there showing another manager his vacation pictures. I stopped, popped my head in and asked "Are we paying you to do that?" and walked away. Still one of my favorite moments of my career.

He'd come up behind me while I was elbow deep in hot soapy water, pressed himself against me, said something incredibly sleazy & I lost it. I turned around with what I'd thought was the 'bean spoon', stuck it in his face & cursed his sleazy self at the top of my lungs until I'd backed him against the deep fryer. Only then did I realize I was actually holding the 11" 'olive knife' (same handle- whoops🤷). While his eyes were still bulging, I stripped off my uniform, threw it in the sink, & walked home in my boxers. Haven't been to a taco hell since- However, an assistant mgr (Kip) & I showed up at george's trailer for a party later that same year, stole his keg, & rolled it into the sewage lagoon. Aside from hiding in the tall grass while irate, c@ked up guys with handguns looked for us, that went suprisingly well. I hope Kip is doing well, but Up Yours george & scott. I’ve done it twice, walked in, walked up to the Boss, each time just before starting time and quit. The first time the Boss didn’t believe me. It arose because the boss attempted to chew me out for not doing something, it had been on his desk for 2 weeks and I had reminded him 4 times. The second was me coming in first thing in the morning, the boss was surprised, then the penny dropped, then the puzzled “but why”, I cited the fact I’d worked 60 hours a week and when under his bonus scheme I’d earned over $3,000 in bonus the previous month, he had changed the system retrospectively so that I got no bonus.

But she tried saying I wasn’t good with patrons (they specifically asked for me soooo often because I was incredibly good at finding books and the only person there good with computers) she tries saying I wasn’t bad at everything, which there was only really one task I was slow at, and most others I was twice as fast as anyone else. When she did fire me I heard from other workers that the patrons were asking for me constantly and expressing how they missed me, and it actually took hiring two people to get books shelved as efficiently as I did. I came back to the organisation 6 months later to do some personal business and my manager took me to have a look at where I used to work- what he showed me was that they had to get 7 other people to keep up with my workload. I still smile with the memory. I did resign politely, but oh boy did they have a workload to keep up with.

I got the email when I was in a meeting with one of our bigger clients, talking about renewing their contract and working on some of the details of that renewal. I was the only liaison with the company and we got along really well. When the email notification popped up, I was projecting my screen and the subject line was "Notice of Redundancy". I was going to continue, but the project manager said that we could stop, as they and I quote "weren't going to renew if I wasn't going to be there". They took me out for dinner and some drinks when we left and I never went back to the office. I heard later that they had followed up and not renewed their contract. When I quit my last retail job I had worked with the district manager. They day I quit was a stock truck day. The GM and OP manager of the store were stealing tens of thousands of dollars in electronics every week. I called the district manager told him I had some pictures to show him, and it was best we meet and talk. I told him I was tired of being told to keep my mouth shut with threats to lose my job or have me arrested for theft when I never did anything. I showed him pictures and small video clips of the GM, OP and asst managers loading TV's and computers into their personal cars from the loading bay. Told him I can't take it I don't care if I lose my job, but this is crazy. He talked me down and help me write a letter to my GM we worked together had the coo of the company, him and 8 police officers in a park across the street with a corporate fraud investigator. I got wired with a mic and walked into the store and into the loading dock where they had started stealing before the load truck even left said "wtf your the most greedy crupt people I have ever seen the truck hasn't even left and your in here calling dibs on crap and putting stuff in the GM truck. I quit I can't work crazy people like you I hope you get caught. Walked out the front door and the cops rushed in. The store was closed for 2 weeks, but 9days in I got a call from the district manager asking if I was free to meet I was we chatted, and he shared with me over the 11mo him and his brother in law were gm, and om, they stole 1.14 million in stuff. Also asked if I would testify on the stand to what I had seen. And offered me the GM position and said I'd be the youngest gm in the company history, but I have good head on my shoulders and feels I can pull it off even knowing I was 20. I took the offer I was there as a gm for just over a year before the company went belly up due to greed at the top. The ceo took the money and left the country. My problem with a notice. Is usually the employer is not held to the same standard. If I'm being fired for poor performance, not for a particular incident, they'll still fire me that day and expect me to leave that day with zero notice. I completely understand if I do something to get fired like steal or yell at a customer, I would expect to be fired but with that in mind, if they do something to me that warrants me quitting I don't think I should have to give notice.

Assaulting a customer? Fired. Bad for business, bad look all around. The manager should have stepped in long before things escalated to that point anyway. But yelling at a customer, especially if there have been major stressors (you're under a lot of pressure, the customer was yelling & swearing at you, your boss is a bully, etc.)? Is not grounds for being fired. Don't get me wrong - it should get you written up, with some performance coaching and reviewing, and possibly enforced time off, but not fired. Especially if you are able to articulate the extenuating circumstances.

I've got a pretty funny one. So back around 1991 I was still in the US Navy reserve and was down in NAS Jacksonville (Florida) doing my annual two weeks active duty training. As it so happened, Labor Day fell at the end of my two weeks duty. Interstate 95 (I-95) is the main north/south interstate highway that runs from Maine all the way down to Key West, Florida and so it runs right through Jacksonville. As it so happened, the section of I-95 that ran through Jacksonville was undergoing repaving/resurfacing while I was down there that summer, so there were a few miles of highway where the lanes were compressed down from 4 to 2, reflective construction drums lined the sides of the highway, gas-powered messaging boards advising of traffic conditions ahead, etc.... you know, the normal stuff you typically encounter when driving through a highway construction zone. So the first week I was down there, the message board by the side of the highway at the beginning of the construction zone just said something like "Construction ahead. Speed limit 25mph" or something prosaic like that. However, on the Friday afternoon of Labor Day Weekend (which is a 3 day weekend here in the US), someone (probably a college summer hire who was returning to school the next week) changed the message to read "F%ck you, Dan". That message flashed on the board ALL weekend long!!!!!!!!!! I have no idea how many tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of people saw that message. Every time I passed it I just about died laughing. Yeah, F you, Dan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bit of context to the guy that made a leave notice similar to a break up. In the USA there's usually not a law stating you have to stay employed any longer than you want to. There's just a tradition of 2 weeks notice. When we quit, we say 'We're turning in our 2 weeks notice.' That 1st to 12th thing was exactly 2 working weeks. We can also just walk out of the building and let them figure it out. This isn't 1 way though. US businesses can fire anyone at anytime for any reason with no notice, or explanation except those banned by some laws, but those are easy to get around. Some employers are kind, others constantly use this as motivation.

I give my douche of a boss notice of my early retirement and then the douche bag in him came out and started telling me I couldn't retire I wasn't old enough and to get back to work. So I told him your six month notice is now a six second notice and walked leaving him in the middle of a huge influx of raw material that has to be processed in a very timely manner or it will ruin not really sure how it turned out for the ole boy and don't care

I got so damn fed up one year that I booked the 3 weeks prior to the Christmas shut down off, and during the first week sent an email that I was quitting the last week of the next January. Well after 4+ weeks there is no please stay argument. On the last day of work I said, "That's it I've had it, I bloody quit". Job I went to sucked big time though.

Long time ago I started a retail job where I was told on the first day that if I called in sick I could be fired, and if I came to work obviously sick I could be sent home and then fired. I found a new job that same day and called them to say I wasn’t coming back. They did not seem concerned, but ok 🤷🏻♀️first and last retail job I ever had.

Retail is a pain. When working part-time (while in school) I put in a request for a 2-week vacation for an overseas trip with family. I had been there over a year, had never requested days off before, and was consistently the 2nd or 3rd top salesperson (first place lady was untouchable-so my main competitor and I were always trying to outdo each other for that 2nd place slot). My request was denied by management as it was one of the busier times of the year…so I resigned. Because it was just a part-time gig for me and my retail skillset is highly transferable. I’ve never understood their logic bc that left them short-staffed for much longer than the 2 weeks that I had requested. Mgt is pretty shortsighted!

On my last day, it was a truck delivery morning. I worked in a liquor store as a supervisor; at a state run agency. When we received cases of Crown Royal Blackberry whiskey (which is allocated in our state) within the first 43 minutes of being in the store we had 8 patrons rushing in for purchase. Once I got through that last patron I stopped stocking the shelves to go on the computer and search for a picture of Tyrone Biggs (Dave Chappelle character), edited it in Excel with the captions "got any of that blackberry crown royal?" and printed it for the sales counter. Within the hour, another store's manager had walked in (for some not related issue) and saw my little display. She took a picture and sent it to District Management. I got my managers in trouble but honestly, did not care. For a state run agency I and many others should not have worked with the bs befalling us and at parttime positions, pay and no benefits.

I don't think I understand why a business would not like someone having a side business like the cake baker. As long as the side hustle isn't conflict of interest, ie you work as a consultant and your side hustle is consulting, there's no issues. They don't get to decide what you do in your spare time. I know that's not necessarily the case here, but just commenting on your commentary.

Let's be honest - places like Maccas usually have so many casuals, and people applying for casual positions, that you don't *really* need to give a full 2 wks notice. It's polite to do so, and it does make it easier on the person who looks after the rosters, but in the fast food industry if someone walks off the job, unless they are a manager or have a specific skill set that takes some time to learn, it's not even a blip on the radar of interrupting how that business functions.

If someone quits and doesn't work their notice has any company in the UK ever taken someone to a tribunal? I can understand if maybe it was a high end job like lawyer, but would McDonald's or a care company really take someone to court for say resigning with immediate effect?

I got pulled into a meeting out of nowehere at a job where I was doing sending and receiving of product we made in house. In the meeting I was told i was getting a written warning for my "performance" no indication of what that was just that they expected better. So I stood up and went, well, I quit, f**k you all, went downstairs, wrote on a peice of paper I quit, let everyone in the office know what happened and walked. About a year or so later the manager was fired from her role for the same "lack of performance"

Keep in mind in the US more jobs are at will meaning the company can fire you at anytime and for any reason. Your comment regarding the shortened notice period of the McDonalds worker doesn’t apply. Any notice period an employee gives is a courtesy not a requirement. Since the pandemic it has become common to give no notice at all. I returned to the workforce after having been retired. I decided the job wasn’t for me and gave a traditional 2 weeks notice, everyone was surprised. I was told in most hourly positions no 1 gives notice anymore, nevertheless I did. I suppose because there is no loyalty to employees from companies anymore employees have decided what’s good for the goose is good for the gander.
