At a former retail job i had I (a department supervisor) once took a call from the daughter of one of our seniors who worked there. Her father had passed of a heart attack and she was letting the store know. Despite the fact the guy was dead the store manager still sent a job abandonment notice to his address because, "he failed to notify us of his inability to work and failed to communicate to the proper management." Oh, and she also wrote up people who went to his funeral no matter if they took tine off work for it or were already scheduled off.

Oh! The people who never got informed the job was closing almost happened to me. The higher ups hadn't planned on telling any of us they were closing our location, we only found out because my boss saw an email about a work order about a team coming up to remove the pipes in our building. When she questioned it, her boss hadn't been informed either and they had to go up another link in the chain to find out what was going on. Apparently the company had gotten into a fight with the landlord about an OSHA violation and had deemed that it was cheaper and easier to break lease and close the location than it would be to fight the landlord over who was responsible for fixing the OSHA violation. They sold all of our furniture and several plumping fixtures not native to the building to offset the fees from break lease. My boss wasn't supposed to have been included on the work order email as the company hadn't intended to tell us we were all losing our jobs.

That last one seems to be a common theme esp among chains. Heard that story multiple times over the years with various places. In fact, happened in our town recently. Everything's fine when they close up at night. The workers come in the next morning to find the locks changed, signs down and equipment gone. Overnight. Even the local manager was caught by surprise. The company knew well enough in advance to plan this whole thing like a commando operation yet didn't have the decency to give the workers a warning to find other jobs.

Personally, I think that should be illegal. If you can plan to close the store, you can give your staff the time they need to change jobs, rather than potentially forcing people on social assistance overnight.

I had a similar experience. I was hired as a graphic designer with a few years experience under my belt. The business ran out of a house. There was some modification on the first floor to accommodate clients. The rest remained house like. Communication was not my boss's strong point. We were to have meetings weekly to block out jobs. He was always too busy. Then I'd come to my desk and find rush jobs on them with incomplete instructions. One Monday I found my drawing table had been moved to the attic. Facing a wall. He felt facing the only window would reduce productivity. I moved it because it felt claustrophobic. In my former space was an older designer. I was told he was renting the room to run his business out of. We'd talk shop during down times. Eventually jobs slowed down for me, I'd ask my boss every morning what he wanted done, so I spent the time updating his graphics files, redesigning some of the older catalog sheets to make them look better. He brushed it off. One weekend his wife called and told me I was no longer needed and if I wanted to pick up my tools. The transportation costs and time wasn't worth it.

My wife worked for an Arborist company that was run by a con artist couple. Their M.O. was to start or take control of a company (or a church in one case) and run it on credit but take as much money as possible out and not pay the debt they would run up. They would then cut and run or declare bankruptcy to avoid paying the debts leaving many people out of pocket. The arborist company was making good money but eventually the partner they had running it realised what they were doing and pulled out leaving them to run it further into the ground. Eventually the 20 year old who they had running it (who started as an 18 year old crew trainee) turned up one morning to find the keys didn't fit the locks (the owner took possession of property because company had not paid any rent) and he turned around to see a repo man taking pocession of the company vehicle because they had not paid the finance on it. He was literally left standing in the rain with no job and no way home.

I had a job with a highly wealthy family who never spoke to me but handled all employment transactions through a manager. I could see that the grown children in the family were extremely spoiled and often just eliminated assets on a whim or bought very high dollar assets without consulting anyone. This put the financial manager into fits and extreme frustration daily. Seeing how unstable the situation was, I asked him to please let me know if he thought any changes were happening that would suddenly cause me not to have a job. Unfortunately that happened but he had no clue. Their overall manager just appeared at the office one day, fired everyone, closed the entire office and moved it a few hundred miles away. In this case, I considered it my own fault, seeing I stayed under those risky conditions.

They closed over the Christmas break because the owners wanted a break, and they told her to call at the beginning of January to find out about upcoming shifts. When she called them, they said they were taking a longer break, and to call back at end of Jan. In mid-Jan a mutual friend asked her how her job-hunting was going. No box for the meal to at least take it home. I felt horrible for the employees!! What an absolutely crappy way to treat them. But it is apparently quite standard in the restaurant industry. One of my former employers would suspend an employee "pending investigation". Then call them 1-2 days later and fire them over the phone. It was their policy to not terminate anybody in person.

Was supposed to have a company email set up, IT never did, and one evening they sent out a company wide email saying doors will be closed for good the next day. Then they started packing up the store. I called another store that I spoke to frequently and asked them if anything like that was going on with them as well, and they said yeah a few of us got hit and no one told us beforehand. So I had to call my other three employees to tell them they're out of a job. And if that doesn't take the piss, our last checks bounced too.

A good business when closing who want to keep help until the moment they close offer a package to people who stay. For example, if you're losing a contract and you need to have people to transfer data to the next company that won it, you don't just pay them until the day of closing, you give them a nice severance package. For example, stay on to help us knowing you'll lose your job, but you'll get 6 months of pay and benefits to help you in the gap of looking for another job.

My firm did something a little sneakier than that - they were making people redundant, and made the offer of letting people go immediately with 3 months salary, or staying on working out their three months notice. Some people stayed on working, but a lot left immediately to look for new jobs; at the end of the three months, nearly all of the people that stayed on found that there was enough work for them to stay on indefinitely... I suspect management tipped the wink to people they wanted to keep that they were likely to have a job at the end of the three months, and effectively just got rid of the workers they didn't like...

Most employees had seen the writing on the wall and left already (like my wife did) and it turned out the employers had been gambling/spending everything away since it opened and had not paid the employees income tax (it's automatically deducted from wages and supposed to be paid to government but they kept it and spent it) so employees had issues with tax returns/loan applications etc after that as it showed up as a debt in their name. Turns out the employers (a married couple) were con artist scammers who had sunk a church in massive debt after they got there hands on the books and done the "open a business, get everything on credit, stop paying it back and pocket all they can before it goes tits up.

It's amazing how many folks think they have done their sympathetic duty when they tell you, "Susie wouldn't have wanted you to xxxxxxxxxx. " Really? You're going to school this grieving person who was close to the departed, about what they would have wanted? Another one: just saying, "Sorry for your loss. " The deceased is not a "loss." They have a name, they had a life, they meant something to people. They aren't a generic statistic on a piece of paper.

The last one is like what happened to a local hairdressers near me. One day the staff showed up and the place was locked up. Turns out the owner had just disappeared and had abandoned the place. I understand it was due to financial difficulties the business was in - so that explains the staff being blindsided when the owner did a runner and they found themselves out of a job all of a sudden. Not good though of course.

I got the third one where someone was fired and they sent an email notification out to the entire team saying he'd been let go because he was not being a teamplayer and 'part of the family'. I actually messaged my direct manager and told her I felt that email was not only indignant but completely unnecessary. I asked what the point of it was and she said, "because everyone has to understand that we're a family" and I said, "I don't believe 'family' is the right word, I would say, 'team'" and she said, "well we all have to be teamplayers so we just wanted to make sure everyone knew." I said, "We all know. I personally don't understand why he was fired because he was nothing but a good colleague while working with me. As someone who has been here a long time and considered a 'veteran', I think public embarrassment is totally indignant if you are all choosing to let someone go. An all staff announcement is totally inappropriate and frankly, not at all professional. How would you feel if you were terminated and an email like this was written about you?" And she said, "OK, I see where you're coming from." And I said, "Yeah, so go and tell XXXX that he needs to do better with management emails. This is totally unprofessional and I don't expect to see another email like this again if someone is let go." Yeah, they never did that again.

A company I worked for informed the IT Helpdesk staff that they were going to fire three and keep one, and outsource any other work. So they had to apply for their own jobs. A senior manager rang IT at 6 pm to find everyone had gone home. When he queried it, he was told, "You're going to sack us all, so we stopped doing unpaid overtime." One advantage of your own IT team is that they're in the same building...

I am unsure in which country the gym takeover occurred, but in the United Kingdom, you cannot just fire everyone if someone else buys your business. The new owner has to take on the existing staff under the Transfer of Undertaking (Protection of Employment) Regulations 2006 (TUPE)

The first one - just do a big meeting with everyone! Second one - Do a meeting! If needed close the fucking store! Third one - Work is not a family! If you are to cover a shift you will need to get paid, not do it free! Fourth one - Never joke about quitting or leaving! Fifth one - If the closage is planned, then you have to tell them. If it is on the day I can understand it.

Is this trope about the work place being "family", common? Because frankly, the thought that people I work with are family seems very weird to me. One might develop a close relationship with a particular individual one works with, sure. But I really find this thing kind of sad. If you consider your workplace, as a group, family, I can only conclude that you've never known a true family.

Gee, I wonder why those 2 guys you fired had such poor attitudes? It's not like in just your statement about firing them you had to buy the red flag store completely out of stock. Good grief Can you quit a job you never had just reading their response to firing someone? Because I yelled "I quit too!" and a few expletives when you read that out.
