Dan White also had ties to Jim Jones. Bay Area media still has annual retrospectives about the events of November '78, but as time has passed, they don't provide as much perspective about how influential Jones was in city politics.

@@brianoneill7186 And I'm sure you know Jim Jones had ties to Mayor Moscone. Joe Thomas, the 49ers GM at the time also wanted the game postphoned. But that was because he was convinced someone would try to shoot him. Thomas was a truly awful GM and was fired after that season ended. I remember watching some of this game and was a bit surprised in light of the day's events it was being played. Dianne Feinstein has often said that the 49ers winning the Super Bowl in '82 helped heal the city from this awful day.

Oddly, the NFL is very hypocritical about this issue. A few years ago, a Texas Ranger was murdered in the line of duty. The Dallas Cowboys wanted to honor the martyred Ranger with a pre-game ceremony. Commissioner Roger Goodell ordered them not to do it.

I was at a Maryland State Boys High School Championship game and the man who sang the National Anthem collapsed after the first verse, he was carried off in a stretcher, he was moving his arms, we all sang the anthem in unison, Bob Wade who is the public school athletic commissioner then ordered both teams to take 10 more minutes of warm ups before tipping off. The singer was fortunately released from the hospital the next day, it was just a bad reaction to a medication he was taking. But it scared us all who were there.

Prayers to all the football players who have died during a game or who where injured terribly. My uncle was killed during a game in 1944. He was the quarterback for the Wisconsin Badgers. He was only 17. After a play everyone went to the sidelines except for Allen Shafer. He lay dead from a hit to his chest while blocking for a running back. It was big news in Madison for a couple weeks, but then largely forgotten after. I would like to think that after all these years and with all the improved equipment someone would figure out how to protect the chest of players. I hope the young man who was injured last night recovers. I also hope THEY figure out a way to protect the players chest. Allen Shafer suffered a pulmonary edema (hemorrhage of the lungs. What's really wild about this situation. Moscone and Milk were killed 10 days after Leo Ryan was killed in Jonestown. Ryan represented a district close to SF and represented Redwood City, which is where the 49ers trained at the time (though the border between districts was in Redwood City, so he may not have represented that part of town). Just a very sad time in the city/areas history.

On October 24, 1971, the Detroit Lions were playing the Chicago Bears. Wide Receiver for the Lions, Chuck Hughes, had caught a pass in the fourth quarter and was sandwiched in a tackle. Just a few plays later, with 63 seconds left in the game, he collapsed on the field. The cameras showed him rapidly panting, helpless on the turf in a vain attempt to stay alive. I've never forgotten those images. He became the first and only NFL player to die in a game. The game concluded and 50 minutes later he was pronounced dead. Yesterday with the injury to Damar Hamlin, all the announcers I heard said nothing like this has ever happened before. But it has. I was twelve years old when that happened and the event stayed with me for weeks. If you could report on that game, Official JaguarGator9, it would be of benefit to all. The NFL released this statement on the day of the game: "Tonight's Buffalo Bills-Cincinnati Bengals game has been postponed after Buffalo Bills' Damar Hamlin collapsed, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced. Hamlin received immediate medical attention on the field by team and independent medical staff and local paramedics. He was then transported to a local hospital where he is in critical condition. Our thoughts are with Damar and the Buffalo Bills. We will provide more information as it becomes available. The NFL has been in constant communication with the NFL Players Association which is in agreement with postponing the game." To me, this sounds like the NFL trying to cover itself against a lawsuit that will undoubtedly be filed. In contrast, the NFL Players Association released this announcement last night that read: "The NFLPA and everyone in our community is praying for Damar Hamlin. We have been in touch with Bills and Bengals players, and with the NFL. The only thing that matters at this moment is Damar’s health and well being." This statement sounds sincere, honest, and concerned.

When did Broncos player die? Was game called?
@CatherineJessicaNatof
@CatherineJessicaNatof 2 жыл бұрын
@@ajkOn August 20th 2005 there was a preseason game between the Broncos & 49ers. Player Thomas Herrion collapsed in the locker room after the game ended. And I will say that there are *major* differences between this and the other times I have witnessed CPR on the field. In the the latter of the two hockey games I saw it in, the news was learned 3½ hours after the event that the patient Leafs player regained consciousness in the hospital. In the latter game involving the Blues, it was learned 14 hours later that he woke up from a medical coma. We still have no news now; outside of what we have been given. In the instance with the lacrosse player and Chuck Hughes, it was known they died on the field, and ETA. Same for the Herrion player in the locker room. At least you know the end outcome. Even bad news would allow the start of a healing process, and not _purgatory_. And as for the coach, it was known that his status was improving in brain function 6 hours later. 2 hours after that he woke up in the hospital. *The odd thing is that the JFK assassination and 9-11 terrorist attacks were different in different in three ways.* 1. The event happened with an immediate outcome 2. The game was postponed before it started 3. There the was another week of football in the regular season to be played. *On Dec 7, 1941; the Chicago Bears were playing a "road game" against their crosstown foe Chicago Cardinals.* * The Packers were on bye. The Bears had their bye early in the season. The game was midway into the second quarter when news came in about Pearl Harbor. Why not cancel the game?* *They could not. Back then; if you played less games, as today, you would be ½ game back. The Packers stood at 10-1 with their season finished. The Bears were 9-1 entering the game.* *The top finishers of the conferences moved on. If there was a tie, a playoff game would be held between the two leaders. So if the Bears could not play the game; why not call a papaply unfair act, giving them them a "ghost win?" and use the head-to-head?* *Because the two teams split their series that season. Why not just postpone everything one week?* *That would normally work. One problem though: the game would have to played between Christmas & New Year's; and many team players reasonably wanted one last Christmas with the family before they went off into the draft.* *So why not play the game New Year's? Because Jan 4 was the date of the NFL All-Star Game. With January 21 being the date of the NFL championship; with the Cardinals unlikely to accept a penalty for forfeiting a home game, you had no other options.* *Wait. Why not move the game to the 9th? Give the team a chance to mourn? And it is only two less days for rest: not too much of a competitive disadvantage.* *Well transporting teams was tougher than today. And delaying the departure date would mean delaying departure.* *There are procedures about buying tickets ahead of time, and by all misfortune, there was a review taking place on whether an onside kick resulted in Brooklyn Dodgers touchdown (yes there was a football team called that), or a Giants recovery. *Back then if there was a disputed play result, the referees would have to vote; as there was no replay system. And the voting results would be telegraphed to the Commissioner.* *It was 6-5 in favor of the Giants; but the telegraph came in, saying it was in favor of the Dodgers. This miscommunication meant the Bears & Cardinals near the end of their game, which had to be decided for good; had to play it out- as a win by the Bears* *would mean with the information they had; would mean BOTH conferences would have to play a playoff. You have to know where you are traveling to!* *And with the possibility of a game on the 9th not being possible in their minds; and with above options exhausted, the Bears & Giants had to play on the day of Pearl Harbor.*

Next to Hamlin, I got really scared when Saivion Smith went down at Foxboro during the Patriots Lions game, how he collapsed without any major physical contact made me think it was something else just as bad as Damar Hamlin, his dad and uncle were in that game thankfully as it was his first game after called up from the practice squad. Another injury that had happened with another Lion was Reggie Brown a fellow Austinite, who went to a rival high school of mine and was knocked out and not breathing in the Jets Lions game in 1997. Unfortunately his injury was career ending. It's very sad how dangerous can the NFL be out of nowhere, these poor athletes didn't sign up for life threatening moments like these and most don't think it could happen.

I actually learned about this tragic event 15 years later when it was mentioned in a book about the 49ers. One particular thing I remember from the book is that 49ers general manager Joe Thomas, who fans blamed for the team's losing ways, wanted the game cancelled because he was afraid that some angry fan would try to shoot him. That's when Eddie Debartolo knew it was time to fire Thomas, and the team's fortunes would begin to turn with the hiring of Bill Walsh and drafting of Joe Montana the next year.

Even Dr. Sutterer said this is really rare where commotio cortis where a blunt force hit to the chest that disrupts the heart into cardiac arrest usually happens with kids. Their ribcage isn't developed to protect against those hits. Usually this happens in baseball or lacrosse where the ball his either hit or thrown and hits the person's chest causing that incident. The only treatment is CPR and AED shocks to the heart as quick as possible. In this case, the medical staff did the CPR and AED shocks almost immediately. But yet, the biggest reason why the game was *NOT* moved to 24 hours later was very likely the pressure from ABC. They didn't want a postponement of _Happy Days_ , _Laverne & Shirley_ , _Three's Company_ and _Taxi_ , all of which were some of the highest-rated shows on TV at the time. Trying to play it on November 28, 1978 would have been a huge financial disaster for ABC since it would have seriously affected ABC's ratings at the very end of the all-important November "sweeps" period for Nielsen ratings.

While I agree Rozelle deserves almost or all of the blame for having the NFL on the weekend after the JFK murder, with happened in Nov. 1978, I put most of the blame on then CEO of ABC. While the NFL had just overtaken MLB as America's most popular sport, Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley to this date over 45 years later for that combined hour had some of the most watched scripted entertainment shows in US Television history. So you are correct Sacto.

Damar has made a complete recovery which is great, but it’s significant to acknowledge that the injury wasn’t a typical football issue. Hamlin had a cardiac attack as a result of a million to one shot resulting from the fact that he was hit at the precise microsecond that his heartbeat was most vulnerable. This same problem actually happened to a high school baseball player from my town who was hit in the chest with a batted ball at the very worst possible moment. Unfortunately, he didn’t receive the immediate help that Hamlin did and we lost him. At any rate, keep in mind that it wasn’t a normal football injury. It was an extremely rare cardiac problem.

The harness gave way and Hart fell to his demise. nstead of calling the event off, they went ahead with the event, though everyone in that venue seen what happened. I tuned into the event late and wasn't aware until Monday Night Raw. I'm glad that the NFL had enough sense to shut the game down after what had happened to Damar Hamlin.

JaguarGator: I have a scenario that might be worse than this: Imagine two games that HAVE TO BE PLAYED, as they both determine the conference champions for the NFL title game; or whether playoffs are necessary. The Chicago Bears had to win 7 Dec 1941 against the Chicago Cardinals to tie the Packers. The Dodgers *(yes the football Dodgers)* were tied with the New York Giants entering the day. That day the latter two teams would play each other to determine who would advance in the Eastern Conference. Because the playoff game between the Packers & Bears would be scheduled for Dec 14th if needed; and because the All-Star game was Jan 4th: with Christmas and New Year's intervening; and teams needing to know where to travel - and due to possible train delays from inclement weather - since the games being already both further in progress than the Bills-Bengals game, they had to finish game. Imagine finishing a game AFTER you heard of a terrorist attack. Imagine two games happening as such, with the latter being of HIGHER stakes in the standings; but none of football is on your mind. To complicate things, if an American Football Leauge (1940-1941) game involving New York & Milwaukee that went into overtime ended in a tie, there would be chaos. The New York team due to host would have to travel for what would otherwise be a home game had the Dodgers' game ended in a tie. And under current NFL game playing rules, that is exactly what would have happened in today's tackling and scoring system. And since the NFL is was a monopoly regulated under the leauge, it meant something major. War efforts would be forced to be postponed!

Going back to last night's (January 2nd, 2023) game, the NFL should consider terminating the game, and give Cincinnati a 7-3 victory, barring a forfeit. A final decision on whether to play games on the weekend of January 7th-8th be held off until Friday (January 6th). If Damar Hamlin is still alive, the Week 18 games would proceed as scheduled. But if, Heaven forbid, Hamlin passes away on or before Friday, the NFL should cancel the final weekend of the regular season and not make those games up.

Alt. I think if Damar is still alive Friday 1/6/23, they will still play the regular season finale on schedule that weekend. And as Sacto says just award this tragic game a tie for the Bills and Bengals. With the Grammys and Daytona 500, both scheduled around the President's Day holiday weekend/later in Feb. I don't think the NFL and CBS/Fox wants to delay the Super Bowl any longer by postponing the current last week of the regular and the entire post season unless they have too.

If it becomes inappropriate to have NFL games on the weekend of January 7th-8th, I think those games will simply be cancelled and not rescheduled. It is true that highlights of the 1971 game were shown with the other games, and Cosell didn’t mention Hughes by name. But he somberly noted there was a tragedy, and had reason to think the public knew about Hughes’ death. His tone was respectful and somber through the discussion, and ended with how the game was overshadowed by tragedy. ABC did not include footage of the play on which Hughes collapsed in the segment. From having watched it, I think Cosell and ABC handled a hard situation in a reasonable way. And yes, it is true they did not stop the game.
