Game 2 vs Baltimore was known as the "Joe Washington Game." His most memorable performance was in the Colts' 34-27 victory over the Patriots on Monday Night Football, when he had a hand in three of the four touchdowns scored by the Colts in a fourth quarter in which both teams combined for 41 points. He helped lead off the scoring by throwing a 54-yard option pass to Roger Carr. Washington followed that up with a 23-yard touchdown catch from Bill Troup. Washington broke a 27-27 deadlock by scoring the game-winner on a 90-yard kickoff return in a driving rainstorm. It was scored in the final seconds of the game after the Patriots came back from 27 to 13. He remains the only NFL player to ever throw a touchdown, catch a touchdown and return a kickoff for a touchdown in a single game. (Source: Wikipedia)

People tend to forget (accidentally or intentionally) that before Brady/Belichick; the Patriots were generally a Lolcow franchise. They did have some good players and teams, but still. Heck, then owner James Orthwein nearly moved them to St Louis in 1994 to become the Stallions! But hey a post game concert from the Beach Boys in 1983 was a good idea because back then they still had all 3 Wilson brothers.

the 1978 game failing to sellout also had the red sox, in first place in the a.l. east at the time, playing at the same time the pats game was going on (actually started about 2:30pm, but still, running at the same time as the football game). wouldn't be surprised if that played a part as well. checked for the hell of it, game 2, sox were on the road, game 3, was last day of regular season, sox needed a win and yanks loss to force a game 163 (which happened, and just about every long time baseball fan knows what happened in that game with just 3 words: "fucking bucky dent!!!").

Actually it wasnt until after 1999, although that was the only time the NFL started the regular season in August. This move ultimately led to the NFL in 2002 having to move the Super Bowl back one week to February 3 (first time the SB was held in February and the first time the date was moved) which would make a good JG9 video. He died for the worlds sins and ours. He was buried and raised from death 3 days later for our justification-1 Corinthians 15:1-4. Jesus did everything for us. Without him we all cant pay our sins and deserve hell. However God made a way through his son. All he asks is to agree with him. Trust him alone and NOTHING we do. Salvation is a gift only. NFL Films got into the act as well; Sam Spence composed a piece called "A Bit Of The Classics," which was used in the latter part of the Super Bowl 19 (Dolphins-49ers) highlight film (17:42 mark) and at the beginning of "Best of the Football Follies" (1986). (During the SB 19 film, Brad Crandall narrates, "They (the 49ers) won in a performance that seemed more musical than physical. Every note was perfect.")

Elton John also did this frequently in the 80's at Vicarage Road after Watford matches. It should be pointed out that for the majority of the 80's (until 1989) Elton John owned the club, so he could get away with wrecking the pitch. Elton would go on to own Watford again in the late 90's as they were making a push towards promotion to the Premier League, although he stopped the post match concerts mainly because he was touring in the US & was running the club remotely.

Cool to see these videos, especially for younger people that have only known the Patriots as a perennially dominant, top tier NFL franchise. Before Brady, and especially before Bledsoe, the Patriots were one if the worst teams in the NFL, a position they held since basically their inception. Boston had the Soxs and Celts so the losing Pat's were a last option for Boston sports fans...the fact that they had to use concerts to get fans in the seats shows how horrible and unpopular the Pats have been for most of their history.

Part of the issue with the old Sullivan Stadium was the aluminum benches in the stands. They weren't at all comfortable, definitely didn't give you enough room, and it got hot up there in summer. It was nice when people weren't there. You could stretch out. Also, consider it was the Sullivan family making the decisions back then. They were a never ending embarrassment, despite founding the team. They ended up having to sell the team because of their ineptitude promoting a Jackson's tour, while the Jackson's were at a pinnacle.

Not surprised the Patriots tried this, considering how the owners at the time would promote the Jacksons' Victory Tour a year later. Also, the season ticket setup they had sounds very similar to how the Victory Tour tickets were sold. As for the NFL playing on Labor Day weekend, I have to imagine that was done so that the playoffs wouldn't enter February. I recall that as late as the 2000's, they didn't really want to as February is where one of the sweeps weeks for the networks. Of course, that's no longer a thing as football is king and the Super Bowl is always going to outdo whatever sweeps weeks exist now.
