In a 1998 NFL week 12 game between the New York Jets and Tennessee Oilers at Vanderbilt Stadium, the Jets were supposed to wear helmet decals honoring their late head coach, Weeb Ewbank, who passed away days before the game at the age of 91. Instead, they did not wear the decals, because they got stolen. And the story of how exactly they got stolen is almost too absurd to fully process. This is the story behind the 1998 Jets, and the trouble they had with their uniform decals

I think they were the best Jets team since the merger as well. Had a 10-0 lead over the mighty Broncos in the AFC title game before reality finally hit. Had they reached the Super Bowl there's no doubt in my mind they win fairly easily since they'd already spanked the Falcons 28-3 that season.

Ah, yes, it was a simpler more innocent time back then. Where everyone repected other's packages and this was an anomaly. Now you hear about a package theft daily and its big news is if the theif is caught... Thanks for the walk down memory lane about Weeb. He was a great coach that is often overlooked.
@encycl07pedia-
@encycl07pedia- 2 жыл бұрын
I mean it was highly unlikely that anyone else would have known a) the Jets were getting a package, b) where they were staying, and c) were able to pick it up before the Jets even got there. It's more a matter of people taking advantage of kindness and trusting prevalent in the Southern/Southeastern USA. People who are raised right wouldn't even think of stealing another person's package. Most people in big cities and the Rust Belt only look out for themselves and are much more likely to rip off, mug, or trick a stranger than help them.

@TheSonicsean

The fact that they didn't require either the equipment manager or someone in the staff to be there to give the package to is simply absurd. Also I think the craziest event with Jets jerseys was the Jets-Bills color rush game, where the New York Jets wore all green and the team who plays in New York State wore all red. So if you had the most common color blindedness, you were completely and utterly hosed.

One of my most memorable moments in my life is when Weeb showed up for thanksgiving that year with broadway Joe we have 8mm film from that holiday and it was funny because all of us kids didn’t care that Joe was there we all ran to Weeb hugging him right past Joe but I’m friends with Joe and have been since that day he is a great man too. Weeb Eubank was the winning coach in the two most important games in the history of the national football league. The 1958 NFL championship game between the Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants which put the NFL on the map as a major sport. And Super Bowl three when the New York Jets beat the Baltimore Colts. Which was said during the video made the AFL a legitimate league.
@encycl07pedia-
@encycl07pedia- 2 жыл бұрын
The AFL/NFL merger was coming regardless. In 1965 there were serious talks of merger. Super Bowl III, played in 1969, was not nearly as important as people think. That's a myth.
@shackdaddy7106
@shackdaddy7106 2 жыл бұрын
@@encycl07pedia- Of course the merger was going to happen. The papers had been signed. What had not been proven was that the AFL could compete on the field. Super Bowl III proved it. The only way you could have your opinion is that you were not alive at the time the game was played. Or you did not see the game on TV if you were alive. Or did not know the history of the NFL. It was the greatest upset in the history of professional sports in this country. The Chiefs beating the heavily favored Vikings in Super Bowl IV just enforced it. Until then in the only two meaningful games that the two leagues had played against each other. The first two Super Bowls. Which at that time were not even called Super Bowls. It was called the AFL - NFL championship game. The Green Bay Packers had dominated both of them. And the Baltimore Colts were much bigger favorites to beat the Jets then the Packers were to beat the Chiefs and the Raiders. And then Joe Namath made his famous quote. “ We are going to win, I guarantee it”. Most people felt that the Chiefs and the Raiders were better than the Jets and the Colts were better than the Packers. And almost everybody at the time thought the Colts would win by a minimum of three touchdowns. The Jets beat them. The game was not as close as the final score indicated. And that day the Colts had no answer. One of the two most important games ever played in the history of the NFL.
@encycl07pedia-
@encycl07pedia- 2 жыл бұрын
@@shackdaddy7106 I like how you assume I know nothing about NFL history just because I said Super Bowl III wasn't that important. Broadway Joe Namath is more known for that guarantee than being a great QB at arguably the best college football program in Alabama. The truth of the matter is whether or not the Jets win that game, the merger is going to happen and the AFL/AFC teams are going to win football games against NFL/NFC teams. Let's say the Colts win Super Bowl III like everyone thought would happen. What changes? Does the AFL instantly fold? Do the two leagues abandon their scheduling agreement? Do the two leagues abandon merge talks? Does Minnesota beat Oakland? Doubtful. All it likely does is change in the record books and Joe Namath isn't nearly as popular as he is today, at least not for Super Bowl III and his guarantee. Upsets happen all the time in sports. Remember the 2007 Patriots? How about the 1998 Vikings? 1983 Nebraska? 2007 USC? I could go on and on about teams that were upset by huge underdogs. 1969 was 53 years ago. It's far more likely to find someone who didn't watch it live than did. Are you 60+ years old and remember the bidding war the AFL and NFL were in for top players? Possibly. Maybe that's why you assume just because someone may not have lived in an era, they must be unable to understand or know about it. I wonder why documentaries done by NFL Films and ESPN hardly mention those merger talks, instead opting to go the "Joe Namath and the Jets caused the NFL/AFL merger" route. Probably because it makes for better television... and they don't want to be known for backdoor dealing and billionaire squabbles over how much to pay professional athletes.

There's a huge difference in culture and I'm not surprised this happened. Throughout the Southeast USA and Bible Belt, there's generally a trust between people. People help one another, even if they don't know each other personally. It's very different in the Rust Belt and big cities: people are out to hurt and take advantage of any strangers. People hold the door open for the next one. It's polite, kind, and just general "Southern hospitality." Unfortunately, it's easy for ill-raised and ill-made individuals to exploit this. Seriously, what kind of person asks for a package for the NY Jets? How did that person know there was a package for them when the Jets hadn't even arrived? Yes, it was a major misstep to not ask for ID, but the chances were slim anyone else knew about that. Also, what kind on loony would steal that? They're basically worthless because you can't sell them or the cops will likely be able to trace it to you.

My question is, why steal these? There is no monetary value to them, they're just a bunch of decals and all the Jets would have to do is order more. This just goes to show you that people will steal anything that isn't nailed down.

Like modern-day porch pirates, he probably didn't know what was inside the package. He was just hoping it was valuable.

It was CLEARLY to get revenge on the Jets for accusing the Oilers of cheating over 30 years before. (Whispers.) Clearly...

Dude, you don’t need to spell every single detail out. Just get on with it. We don’t examples of why a person might wear a suit, my lord.
