yup, that's exactly why the dial doesn't stop at the ends, so that it can switch to park for safety reasons. Otherwise they would have to make that knob motorized, which would add cost.

So is the truck disabled if someone opens your door at a stop light and the door is unlocked? I don’t like that at all.

If you open the door, the transmission shifts to Park.

Feeling a gearshift lever fall into position frees the eyes to stay on the surroundings, which helps the ham-fisted people like me. When they introduced that type of dial on radios, it seemed like the volume was always set too high or low.

Knob seems safer. I have shut my car off in drive and walked away to turn around and watch the car roll. Just me being stupid but I think this knob is the trick.

A lever is such a waste. It's a bigger switch than the dial is. Shifters no longer exist. Switches are the new shifter.

As you may know, shifters are fading away because it is cheaper for the maker to provide switches. Unfortunately when this switch malfunctions and needs replaced, it will cost more money than the shifter it replaced.
