Such an amazing place, I could spend days there. Surrounded by such intricate artwork makes it seem less of cemetery and more a celebration of life and faith, hope and love.. don't know if that makes much sense, a showing of wealth perhaps too.. I like to think that the family really believed in an afterlife and this is just how they saw there loved ones making that lonely journey. The boat did say something about adventure, but coming from Birmingham my language skills are not brilliant.

Dan, there was that same sound of the din of diners conversing and eating again! Some of the finest scultures in the world must be there. I watched 60 Minutes on Sunday and it was explaining what Italy was doing with sculpturing the Carrera Marble that they still have plenty of. But they are using some of the finest, well tuned robots in the world to sculptor all kinds of art, ancient copies of sculptors, and brand new ones people are asking for. The big conundrum is many feel it is cheating while others feel it is justified. A very interesting take on what is happening in Italy. Even some of the young feel they want to continue as their father's did, while the older sculptures find it satisfying using a robot. Really makes you think about the new and lost art of master sculptures. ♥️☘️

The most beautiful statue in Staglieno cemetery is the Monteverde Angel or Angel of the Resurrection . This statue is a masterpiece of neo-classical religious sculpture, created in marble in 1882 by the Italian artist Giulio Monteverde. The statue of 1882 guards the tomb of the Oneto family in the cemetery of Staglieno in Genoa, Northern Italy. It is one of the most famous works by the neo-classical Italian sculptor Giulio Monteverde (1837-1917) and was commissioned by Francesco Oneto, a president of the Banca Generale, in honour of deceased members of his family.

Couple of things. Hello, first off. Hope you're well. I saw a couple of portraits, in relief that because of the dust on them reminded me of photographs. Don't know if you've done this, but take an old black and white negative and put something behind it and it makes it look like a photo. THAT is what those reminded me of. Also, my thoughts on the skeleton with the scythe. He's laid out with the scythe 'drooping' and his arm up. An angel is above him. Yes, I know you know: you were there 😉 But, I take this to mean the occupant has beaten death. Death is 'defending himself' and losing. They have 'won' and are therefore 'resurrected'. Think that makes sense.

The vanity of human beings is incredible! These dead people believed so much in their own importance, and yet most of them will have brought nothing to the world and will have taken nothing with them when they left. Having given so little to others whilst they were alive, the only piece of beauty that they leave behind is a statue, a meaningless momument to themselves! Whilst the poor and hungry starved and died before their time these meaningless people would have turned their heels in derision as they passed them in the street! Perhaps the real monument is to the sculpters who led poor under paid lives and whose talents are the real joy that we see! Here's to the great talent that these amazingly talented people have given to us in perpetuaty! ............Dust thou art and unto dust thou shalt return ! ........a lesson perhaps for us all!

why are the americans (of european ancestry) allergic to beauty? Europe is full of beauty (cathedrals, monasteries, royal and aristocratic villas etc.) dating back to past centuries when religion was thriving, while modern, ugly buildings (skycrapers, supermarkets, etc) and "art" lead to disbelief and depression, among other things.

I think you have a very cheeky way of looking at things! How do you know what they accomplished/not accomplished in their lifetime? Obviously someone accomplished something to get such a resting place. I'm not a woman of means by any sense of the word or definition and I'll probably be thrown in a pine box, but I'm not going to speak ill of the deceased. You're putting out a very negative vibe and it's sad you don't just see the beauty in what's left behind to admire.

The talent of the sculptors is amazing, but so is the work of the men who had to move these statues to their final resting places. From what I could tell, most of these date from the end of the 19th century. How on earth did they move such massive, heavy stone sculptures from the artist's studio to this cemetery without damaging or breaking anything, without trucks, cranes, and the sort of heavy lifting machines we have today?
