You’ll find that pageant/dance moms are often overweight or not in good shape. They pretty much live vicariously through their children and push them so hard. I totally agree with Ken when he said that pageants are some sort of child abuse.

"I judge the beauty of the child, not the shape of the child." Yeah outer beauty, I remember one episode where there was actually a good pageant mom, as in doesn't force her daughter to do stuff, is very supportive, and doesn't put crack ton of makeup on her daughter, and doesn't waste thousands of dollars on dresses. If I recall she legit said why waste that much money when you can donate it?, I think she either makes the dresses herself or goes to like the thrift store to get them. The dresses were very nice but not as glamorous or sparkly as the more expensive one, but most importantly the daughter actually look like she's having fun. Then in the same episode they show a mom who was a crazy pageant mom like the one in this video, who buys custom made dresses worth thousands dollars or so and multiple ones as well, takes her daughter to the spa to keep her pretty, I think too the mom hired a makeup crew just for her daughter making her look way older. And guess who won? The one with the custom made dresses since obviously her dress was the most glamorous of all the girls since her mom spent tons of money on it and makeup too. Despite the girl with the nice pageant mom being the better choice (she was more talented and actually look happy as she perform). The judges say they look for inner beauty or best personality yet they always pick the girls with the most expensive dresses and makeup.

Luckily I'm aware as an adult of how my mother was living through me, but as a kid I grew up with such high expectations for myself and I needed to look a certain way. It also helped me to be ok with losing which I think is important. When I decided I wanted to play softball instead she wasn’t mad or even sad about it. Physics says the more something moves the hotter it get, depending on pain tolerance; a drimmel can heat the nail up and hurt the skin underneath. This isn't even going into the nail glue to put the tips on or the acrylic/gel that goes on top of the fake nail." I have had my nails done since I was 15, got my comso license at 18, I'm 25 and hardly ever let a drimmle near my nails anymore. Aside from the pain I felt my nail tech teacher told my class there was not a need to use a drimmle, it causes more damage to the nail and you can get the same result with a little extra effort with a file. The nail needs to be buffed out just enough for the glue and fake nail to adhere to; the drimmle can and does Buff the nail excessively when not used properly.

The sander/grinder they use on her nails is to rough them up so the material sticks to them. I get SNS nails every two weeks, where they sand your nails down to be paper thin and they apply several coats of powder on top, then sand them into shape. If the powder on top cracks, it’s very painful since your nail underneath is weak like paper. Also if they move too fast while sanding your nail, the friction can burn you. The fact that an 8 year old got this is insane to me. They were right to reject her, but they should have stayed firm. The nail eventually grows out, but until then, you’ve got paper nails.

About the dresses: Nope, she meant just those dresses. When I heard her say she got her 12 I almost died because I KNEW It was going to be a LOT. Parents spend THOUSANDS per pageant so their daughter can win like $50 and a Barbie in some pageants if they win their division or overall "Grand Supreme" or some title as dumb. Some pay out thousands, but most do not and it is EXPENSIVE to be in all of these pageants. ENTRY FEES, dresses, costumes, shoes, props, coaches, traveling, hotel rooms, makeup artist, hairstylist, extensions, tanning, some get flippers (fake teeth) and nails (I was going to mention the fake nails even though they can ruin their natural nails and they still get them done and THERE IT WAS! lol) and it goes on and on. They will not even think anything of bleaching a 6-year-old's hair. I had an ex-boyfriend and his mom was/is a pageant director/judge and his youngest sister used to be a successful pageant head and in her adult wife was a pageant coach/judge. There was a man that used to take those absurd photos of the little girls and edit them and he would um "flatter" the little girls and his mom and sister INSISTED he was just being nice. They tried to get my boyfriend's older sister's daughter into pageants and she started complaining to her mom about this man and the way he was talking to her and telling her how cute and pretty she was and how he like to spend time with her, etc and his older sister got extremely upset and even more so that their mother and youngest sister STILL backed this man up!! And that is a regular part of pageant culture. Before all this happened my boyfriend told me about this man and insisted he was a Chester and afterward I was like damn I think you are right. This stuff is GROSS. My daughter's former stepmother entered her into a pageant once when she was about 6 and when I found out I hit the floor. She told me she was miserable and did not want to do it at all and was forced into it. She said her glorious stepmother got upset with her for placing 2nd in her FIRST pageant ever and went off on her telling her she didn't smile enough. And as far as the mom in this video running her 8-year-old around the yard like she's Rocky because you "have to be in shape in order to do talent" I think we all remember poor Honey Boo Boo Alana.

Acrylic nail tips on a child is dangerous! You have to be careful with nails like that so you dont rip your own nails out from the nail bed. Little kids have such small delicate nails and dont know how to be careful with long nails. There is a high risk her nails would be damaged during play. The nail tech was right to refuse acrylics.

A shaper on an 8 year old. That can’t be great for her growing and developing body. Hell, when I wanted to try a corset in high school, they asked if I was 18 since there are more precautions for someone who is still growing. Not to mention the mental pressure that puts on you. I didn’t know that corsets had a recommended age. I never wore them a lot, but growing up overweight, with an overweight mom, if there were ever a formal occasion it was normal for me to wear corsets or full body shape wear. The earliest age I’d worn either one I was maybe nine or ten. I think the worse time I had wearing them was for a wedding, I was about twelve at the time- and I had on a corset and shape wear. I remember being so sore afterwards, especially around my back and ribs.

“Toddlers & Tiaras” is not about the kids, it’s about how awful the parents are. The show is shot and edited to make the parents look the most insane. Most of the time the kids are rolling their eyes, and just trying to keep their Mom’s happy.

Ken, try yoga and stretching for now. Slowly build your muscles and flexibility before you go all gung-ho with lifting weights and push-ups. Then, once you start actually working out, stretch before and after your workouts, and also drink a lot of water (and something with electrolytes) to flush out leftover toxins released by your muscles. It'll stop being such a painful experience.

I've only ever been to one pageant that was not absolutely terrible. It was part of a fundraiser for a church (proceeds came from a hotdog plate & bake sale), and pretty much all the guests were relatives of the participants. If memory serves correctly, the judges were all older ladies from the church, and a lot of the girls, especially the younger ones, had a mom or dad with them on stage for support and seemed pretty excited to be there. We went to see my cousin, and she had a good time even though she didn't really win anything. I've only attended one other pageant, and it was exactly the kind of dumpster fire one might expect. It was at a mall, full of strangers, and at least half of the children were crying, screaming, trying to run away, or some combination thereof, and all the Karen moms either yelling at their kids or joking with each other because apparently it's funny to watch children being absolutely miserable for no good reason. After witnessing that, if I heard on the news that child pageants were made illegal, I'd probably do a happy dance right then and there.

Also, there aren't currently any laws in place protecting kids on reality TV shows and KZbin like there are for kids on sets of regular TV shows and movies. The Coogan law doesn't apply to them, so there is nothing stopping parents from overworking their kids and taking all of the money their kids earned. I think in the next few years we're going to start seeing a lot of kids speaking out about their horrible experiences being on reality TV and KZbin, especially the kids of all the family channels on KZbin that have had their entire lives put on the internet for millions to see. Lawmakers need to get with the times and amend the Coogan law to include kids on reality TV and KZbin.
