I found out from a review years ago that in the manual for the game, the backstory for the revenge mode was that your selected superstar was the champion, but Vince ends up firing you. Stephanie also choices to help you out, because she wants to takeover the WWE. It doesn’t make the story any less weird, but it does add a little bit of context. 🤷🏽‍♂️ Also, that level where you have to swing to the different chain links in the parking lot was the worst! It took me about 2 hours to complete that. I almost broke my controller in frustration. 😤

Thinking about it now the closest thing I can think of is this being WWE's answer to Tekken Force. I just remember grinding the hell out of the Harbor Stage to earn points for my CAWs. Also it did create some cool match types to play against friends in, my favorite being the one where you're in the massive HiaC structure with the breakable panels that lead to the 200ft drop into the ocean.

Wrestlemania XIX I always found to be a really fun game in my childhood though as a kid, when it came to the Revenge Mode, for some reason, I never questioned it's existence. besides wwf Betrayal, there was also knuckle bash a obscure arcade game which is a wrestling themed streets of rage beat em up, where your play as either of the three wrestlers trying to save the pro-wrestling business from the corrupt wrestling organization, which they quit and go around beating up members of the Mad Bull Group all over the world till they finally fight the head leader of the organization. bizarre i know, but not really far off of how some wrestling promotions like to flex its cinematic keyfabe outside the ring even for special brawl or match stipulations.

I played this game a lot with my friends, if you are wondering what is the use of this mode, let me tell you: We never actually played with regular superstars, only with created/custom superstars but only problem is you get very low points to spend for abilities (maybe overall 50/100) but if you wanted to make your custom superstar stronger, then you would had to beat this game mode multiple times ( maybe 5 or 10 points each run).
