Eric seems like a good dude, his success is well earned. He has a clear passion that is completely lost in modern triple A games. He single handedly proved that you dont need a 25 million dollar budget and unreal engine to make a great game. I would have gladly paid $60 for it.

All these idiots talking about "you dont money and good engine to create a great game" usually knows nothing about gamedev. Yes, you can create a great game manually coding 0 and 1 in notepad. But why would you, if you can have Unreal Engine for free? Tools such as Unreal Engine are TOOLS - they are here to HELP you. The only purpose of game engine is to help you create your game. Making Stardew Valley with Uneal Engine would be easier for Eric than using his engine. It would be absoulutly the same game and may be even better

@Tidder T More like Eric saw one kid build a volcano out of play dough, so he was inspired and made a more complex volcano out of legos and added a separate vinegar and baking soda reservoir that could be activated via radio waves. In other words, he’s the student who was inspired by another, but took the original concept WAAAY further, so he is deserving when he gets all the praise! No other sole developer does the same amazing work as Eric Barone! He continues to add hundreds of hours worth of content to an already sprawling game, and all for free mind you! Harvest moon/story of seasons is a special game series, but none of them have near the content or the polish that Stardew Valley contains. SOS/HM have had a myriad of different devs over the years, so they lack quality and design consistency, whereas Stardew Valley started great, and just keeps getting better!

To be fair, the harvest moon/story of season series is rather dead, the companies behind have not done a good job in giving new life to the game. Stardew Valley grabbed the original Harvest Moon, which is probably the best game of the series (ironically) and modernized it.
@matchayokkann4 жыл бұрын
Barone was inspired (as all developers are, including Yasuhiro as he even mentioned Zelda), and he evolved his favorite game to include features that he thought were missing. He’s brought nostalgia and restoration to the dying farming/sim genre and is the opposite of “rip-off” cash grab developers; even with its cheap price Stardew has no ads/in-app purchases and he’s still updating the game for free

What Eric said about the romance options at 7:00 is really good information. “How do you know the players will feel connected?” You don’t, but you give them the option. The option is good enough to satisfy that player if they go down that route with your game. It makes sense. So, essentially don’t cheap out on romance options (looking at you, Skyrim). I think the community and tester feedback is also quite important here. Great interview, glad he was able to meet the creator of his primary inspiration. Both were so respectful. 👍🏼 Thanks for sharing.

One thing about Eric that I will always treasure (especially in these times) is that he didnt want to be a part of Steams Early Access scam. He wanted to give fans an complete product. Mainly because it's a bit distracting having a "whisper" break through every now and then, or be there the whole time while listening to the main discussion. overwatch goty? are you absolutely insane?

hmm lets see. Overwatch has been the most fun I've had with a multiplayer shooter in years. I will say that I've not yet played a ton of games that came out this year (Dishonored 2, for instance) that my potato of a rig sadly can't handle. But year OW is great IMHO. Why call that insane? I bet you like games that I don't like, but I wouldn't call you insane for that.
@gatomaru8 жыл бұрын
because overwatch is an EXTREMELY polished game BUT is also EXTREMELY repetitive and terribly shallow gamewise.
@waveplay39788 жыл бұрын
It's repetitive just like most multiplayer games are repetitive (It's always about controlling an objective/pushing a payload or defending a point, but in that way Dota 2 is all about pushing lanes or CS GO is only about planting bombs). This repetition isn't a problem. For me what's great about OW is learning all the various characters and their intricacies. Surely you'll accept that there's an amazing variety of FPS gameplay offered by the hero selection? That's the attraction for me. Is it shallow? I don't think so. There's a lot of depth here that sadly goes missing in most of the solo queue matches.
@waveplay39788 жыл бұрын
Anyway I really like OW and Stardew Valley has been my introduction to a genre for me that I've never even considered playing. It's an amazing achievement and most of all the game has personality and a charm that is kind of irresistible.
