I put a set of wagoneer doors on my j10, power windows are kinda nice. 😂 The woodgrain was still in good enough shape to be able to use one (two) of the 3m wheels as the doors were actually the same color as my truck, so I was motivated to save the paint. Still took..HOURS. As bad as shape as your woodgrain was, sanding was honestly your only option. As far a primer, goes snag up some tractor paint. It's durable and pretty forgiving.

Implement paint works well and it depends on what farm supply companies you have in your area but rustoleum or vansickle are both good and I would use a rear tank from a wagoner and some j10 trucks also had the rear tank when they came with 2 tanks

I looked into the 6 lug / 5 lug axle thing because Dad had a '67 Wagoneer that was the same bolt pattern as a 1/2 ton Ford. Apparently FSJ trucks and Wagoneer went to 6 bolt axles in '74.

Dont know about the brand but some kind of epoxy primer would make a great base. Very nice build for sure. Great concept and all .I noticed the copper brake lines .. Yep, no brake line rust whatsoever. Man thats a nice truck !

I'm enjoying the Precious build. I applaud you ingenuity, doing things on a budget and working with what you have. One thing I would recommend, although you did knock down the surface rust and spray painted the frame, suspension, etc., you might have wanted to use some type of paint over rust, convertor or encapsulator. I realize this a truck that is going to be used and isn't going to be some high dollar pavement princess but I think it may help preserve your investment. Keep up the strong work.

I've always had good luck with tractor paint. It's durable, cheap, and don't look half bad. If you plan on doing body work with any kind of filler, make sure you have primer down first. I gotta say though, the truck is lookin so freakin cool. And the coffin tank looks awesome, TB.

I was going to go with epoxy primer, I waited and kept researching. I finally found out about Urethane… So I researched that… Ultimately, I ended up with high build urethane primer, and paint. I had been considering acrylic enamel, but I was watching “Clunkers and Classics” while he was painting one of his projects and he was describing the differences between the two

This is such a cool truck. I hope you take your time on the bodywork. Fix the rust, put alayer of kitty hair fiberglass over the welds and then some filler. Some of the paint companies have epoxy primer that works with their paint . Consider that before you buy.. You can buy a full kit to paint the truck... I like the wood grain the grand wagoneer had. You could get custom emblems too.

Use upol brand primer and regular tractor paint. Be sure you mix hardener in with the paint so it can be wet sanded and polished. White is most forgiving in covering poor body work. Silver is good too and pops better than plain white.

happy new year to you guys definetely tractor paint from tractorsupply its a enamel (oilbased) paint that can be thinned with white spirit or terpentine and doesnt need a hardener , needs two thin layers of primer , just mist up thin layers and go over it with tractorpaint in the same way prolly need 3 or four thin layers to get coverage but the thinner you put the paint on each layer the harder / tougher it dries it allso prevents drips and runs the paint is cheap and you get a big enough can for the money to do the whole truck and then some limited colours (ford cream and blue , john deere green and yellow , moline red , kubota orange international red that sotah stuff ) as for the gastank clearance : nothing a hammer cant fix just dent it a little

Morning Max. I was a bum this morning. Sorry I missed the upload, I slept in. About painting Precious... I can't recommend a product to use, there are too many. Figure out the budget first. Whatever brand you do choose, start with their etch primer, primer surfacer (catalyzed is best). sealer, color and clear. Use the recommended solvent and catalyst for each product. Shop smart and it won't cost more than a $1000.00 to paint it. Other questions play into this as well like, how long do you want the paint to last on it? OEM color? Custom?? Many more ??? to ask yourselves before you can come to any results. Keep in mind that cheap can look as good and last almost as long as expensive if done right from the start. When I painted my 88' OBS sport truck, I used Cadillac's paint products and process. It was expensive but the paint will still look awesome when I'm 6 under... That's a l o n g time from now. 😉😆😁 ( No one is inheriting my OBS by the way... dropping the fluids and it'll be my coffin. WHO says you can't take it with you. 🤣🤣🤣)

I suggest going back with a white as it will show fewer issues and you don't have to have the body in perfect shape to look good. I did a pearl white on my YJ and love it. First tri coat I've ever done and it came out really nice, especially I had never attempted pearl and it was in my home garage. Hanging the hood vertically helped minimize the inevitable dust you get on horizontal surfaces. Does the J truck fuel tank still fit?

Paint use tractor paint cheap wears like steel,like cars from the 40 & 50s they have primer also. I painted a few old truck in the past .even DD speed shop painted his red fake tri five convertible a couple yeas ago and was very impressed.

Personally, I think it would look good white. It hides a lot of imperfections and looks clean. Gloss black shows a lot, flat black is overdone, and just makes it look unfinished in my opinion.
