He's one of the reasons I decided not to become a lawyer. I can't in good conscience defend someone that I KNOW committed a serious crime like murder, and I can't prosecute someone I know is innocent. But, a defense attorney has to, by law defend his client to the fullest and try his best to get him off, even if you know he's guilty as hell! The same goes for the prosecution. Even if the evidence says the person is innocent, you have to do whatever it takes to send them to jail. Court has become nothing more than a stage with actors. When you go to law school, the better ones even send you to acting class. Trials are not about who is guilty or innocent, it's about winning or losing. It's a game. It's disgusting and sickening. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing I either sent an innocent to jail, or set a murderer free to do it again. But, if your client says "yeah, I did it. But I want to plead innocent", then you have no choice but to try your best to get him off, by law. Otherwise, if it's found that you didn't try your best, you can go to jail. If you're going against an innocent person, you know damn well is innocent, but the DA says I want him to go to jail, you do your best, or you lose your job and will never work in law again.

@@PolitikPolitik-fh2qcit absolutely is, or as close to fair as you could realistically get. Prosecutors aren’t purely virtuous. If a defense attorney can get a guilty man off, a prosecutor can get an innocent man convicted. There’s no such thing as entirely impartial, but if the prosecutor is doing everything they can to get a conviction and a defense attorney is doing everything to avoid that conviction, that’s “fair.”

In what world does an attorney get paid because of the “country’s interest?” Could you even elaborate that dumb statement if you had to? It’s a profession, it’s how these people make their living. Honestly wish I had him as my lawyer. I was being hit most days by my boyfriend at the time. At one point I literally thought he was going to kill me. He was pushing my skull into the ground and just laughing while I was telling him to stop. The night in question he had me by the neck up against a wall and beat me on the head with my hairdryer. Instead of calling the cops I made the decision to defend myself and grabbed a knife. I'll admit to that but my public defender told me if I took it to trial I could get a worse charge and go to prison and I have a kid so obviously I just plead no contest. I went through years of meds therapy psychiatry and AODA counseling. Now I'm sober have my own place and I'm holding a steady job. But that doesn't fix all my problems. Now I can't get a trailer home cuz I'm a felon. I can't get housing assistance because it was violent. I don't make enough money for a home or to rent and go to school because I'm a felon. I'm stuck and it feels hopeless. It was a bad time in my life and now I am looked at as a monster. People see my charge and want me out of sight out of mind. I am human and I feel like felons and people like me need more support and second chances.

@@venicec3310 I would agree, ironically I actually work for defense attorneys. I don't so much think of it in terms of blackstone's ratio, but rather that if it's okay for the courts to convict a guilty person on shit evidence then it makes it easier for them to convict an innocent person on shit evidence, which is unacceptable. Still, when you say it is better to let 10 child rapists go free than 1 innocent person to go to jail you suddenly find that not so many people agree with you anymore. The comment was more about societal hypocrisy than suggesting that our courts should give less preference to individual rights and due process.

This. Statistically speaking, the amount of innocent people getting arrested compared to actual criminals is a ratio of 8/2. Just look at all the missing people cases, manslaughter, and assault crimes, they number in the hundreds of thousands (compared to the millions of the US populace) and then compare those numbers to the amount of arrests. Then there's the fact that the actual justice system sides on criminals more often than not, which I feel is leaning on one side for some fucking reason, and you'll realize that this man is just one of many. From Juries, to Judgies, to bribes. The legal system is a fucking joke.
