This is the crux of the argument on guns / school shootings. Nobody is paying attention to their kids and their problems. There was an incident in the U.S. with a kid named Ethan Crumbley whose parents knew he had mental health issues, and decided to buy him a HANDGUN for his birthday. He later went on a shooting spree in his school. If someone wants to commit violence, no piece of legislation is going to stop them. People have weaponized trucks and plowed them into people before.

I’m not sure the normality of it is why our press don’t cover it - it’s because our government have an image to uphold, and sadly, the idea and image of Britain and Northern Ireland having a low crime rate is because it isn’t expedient to our government to even give people from certain demographics a few column inches. I’ve seen better and more sensitive coverage of what goes on in the U.K. in the New York Times sometimes, than any of our news outlets. I hate to say it but unless you’re young and full of promise and did well at school, and better yet, are blonde haired and blue eyed, the chances of even your local paper honouring your life are almost zero. When I said certain demographics I’m including s*x workers, LGBTQ people, people with mental health issues and addicts. It’s not about race, it’s about presenting an ideal of who we should care about more and in my opinion the average press that people read hasn’t yet changed enough to not be considered racist in that respect. Look at the coverage of certain missing women and children and you’ll know, either from other outlets or your own experience, that there are many equally horrific cases that don’t get covered at all. I don’t think you read my comment properly. Another example off the top of my head is remembering when the South Indian and Middle Eastern doctors, who prop up our NHS here in the U.K., were struck down with Covid in rapid succession, I couldn’t find one paper here in the U.K. that told us anything about their lives, while the New York Times wrote a really moving piece about their lives, families, and the medicine and research they’d excelled at in their own country. They were treated like dirt by their hospitals at that time and our press probably weren’t advised to humanise them, just like our government didn’t. I hope now you see my point.

It's not the same debate. The UK debate comes from failed immigration policies. The US debate comes from failed education policies. Switzerland has nearly the same amount of guns per capita as the US. But they have mandatory military conscription so every adult male is trained with firearms. In the US people treat firearms like toys. I really like guns, I live in Germany where it's rather difficult to legally acquire them, and I'm grateful for that. Half the people I used to associate myself with in my teens and early 20s would be dead myself included if we had access to ammunition and firearms the way the US does. The ammunition part is crucial. As getting illegal guns is much easier than heavily regulated ammunition. In the US any criminal can buy thousands of rounds to use. While in civilized countries ammunition is heavily regulated and thus criminals have to acquire ammunition from illegal sources, essentially bottlenecking the amount they can use in crimes.

Half of the UK doesnt have anywhere near what the youth of Camden have access to. That’s such an insult to most of the country.. Camden is home to world renowned venues such as London Zoo, The British library, Madam Tussauds, Regents Park to name a few. Then there are the multiple free amenities football pitches, basket ball courts, skate parks, swimming pools (Lido), etc etc. It is an inner city borough with a high amount of poverty but it is hundreds of times better serviced, funded, and full of opportunities than most other parts of the country. It’s because we have lax laws, a weak police force and a culture that absolutely loves drugs. The tourists you interviewed are a prime example, going to Camden Town high Street to party and fuelling the lucrative cocaine market and simultaneously aiding the Reliance on heorin and prostitution in the area. I thought to myself, ‘This is the place to be!’ So, I spent two months getting ready for my big move to the oh-so-wonderful London. I landed at Heathrow, jumped into a taxi, and headed to the apartment I had pre-booked. As we drove through some neighborhoods, I thought I’d taken a wrong turn into the set of a zombie apocalypse movie. People were wandering the streets like lost souls, looking miserable and the place looked like a dump. I told myself, ‘This must be the rough part of town. Tomorrow will definitely be better!’ The next day, I headed to the city center, expecting to be blown away by its grandeur. And guess what? Same story-same misery, same rundown streets, same gloomy faces. I lasted exactly nine days in this so-called ‘progressive West’ before I packed my bags and went back to the ‘poor’ Bulgaria that the Brits so love to label as a backward Eastern Bloc country. Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but we’re actually living a much better life over here-way more peaceful, way more prosperous. Someone made a research some time ago, where they compared crime rates between countries that had the death penalty and countries that did not. Turns out that people who are ready to shoot you or stab you with a knife don't really care about consequences, and that the prospect of a five year sentence opposed to the death penalty is not something they think of before they kill you. If consequences were a factor that could demolish crime rates, harsher consequences would fix the problem and more countries would introduce harsher punishments. Hell, allow torture in prisons, or give the death penalty for any type of crime. But it doesn't work. In fact, the countries with the lowest crime rates, like Iceland, tend to have no capital punishment
@johncharlton1995 ай бұрын
We literally have the highest imprisonment rate in Europe. We all have the recidivism rate aswell so go figure 😆. I think the issue of the high crime rate is a little more deep than just, 'lack of consequences' for reoffenders.

It's a societal issue. Banning knives will do absolutely nothing. We are over populated, the poverty gap gets bigger every day, and think about it - most of the offenders are kids and young adults, commonly from a broken home, poverty, a drama. It's a much, much bigger issue than what weapons are or are not available.

“Banning knives” is absolutely a solution. You’d have to add “in public spaces”. That would by the way not make kitchen knives at home illegal. However bringing said knife to the streets would be illegal.
@dynagaming269314 күн бұрын
Okay, who is going to enforce this? Are you going to have a police officer on every corner searching people? You can ban anything you want, but it won't solve the problem since its unenforceable.
@tome22212 күн бұрын
Well apparently not because all kinves are banned in public in the UK (except less than 3 inch pen knives which arent used in stabbings) and knife crime goes up every year because criminals do not follow the law.
