Butler knew just how to act whilst in prison, but not how to act out of it. It seems prison life suited him. Maybe that's why he was always doing things that would get him sent back there....

@@zingwilder9989 I'm reminded of a quote from Thomas More, "If you suffer your people to be ill-educated, and their manners to be corrupted from their infancy, and then punish them for those crimes to which their first education disposed them, what else is to be concluded from this, but that you first make thieves and then punish them?" I don't mean that Butler's crimes could be excused or blamed on the authorities, however. Only that if he survived as a child by being a thief and a con, then having learned nothing else, these are the instincts that he would have defaulted to as an adult. In prison he learned that if he behaved his needs (food, shelter, etc) would be met. Out of prison he had no such guarantee, so he resorted to what he knew best.

Why was he not at home? He had a home. He was not forced onto the street. We also don't know his true age or his real name. Did he say 13 thinking it would make him seem old enough to decide where he lay verses have to be home with parents?
@changeintheair96484 жыл бұрын
No, the reason they were put in prison resulted in many not repeating rather than all became repeat offenders. For instance a child spanked for doing something dangerous, usually did not do it again. The odd, strange one, would do it again in defiance.But defiance was not what drove his motor. He learned he was very intelligent and chose crime over work (fast money). Later a challenge - I am more intelligent that police. I can kill and they will never figure it out. He honestly felt he was smarter than all and it was his eventual undoing .

It's interesting how this man was always able to "con" his way into early releases from prison and yet couldn't seem to stop committing and going back to prison. If he had obtained more formal education he probably would have been a great criminal attorney. He committed some horrific crimes and in the end justice was finally served, period!
