Dear fellow Americans, when our lovely host says the lady fell out the FIRST floor window - that's the SECOND story to us. Our 'first floor' is to the British - the GROUND floor and they call the next story the first floor. It's just a different way of saying the same thing but can be confusing. God Bless!

What do you count a basement and attic, would that be zero then my entry way is first, my living space is 3rd and my attic is the 4th floor. My house has an entry that is its own space but then you can go down to the basement dirt floor, root cellar, no windows basement or up to the first floor. So do I technically have 3 floors or 4. The basement is 1,000 square feet that would be the first floor? The entry floor is 14 foot by 16 foot and has a small seat to take off your shoes and coats before you go up stairs to the living quarters which is also 1,000 square so that means my entry is the 2nd floor and my up stairs the 3rd then my attic would be the 4th floor? I really like the way you think, American Standard I'm living in a one story house with a basement and an attic. European standards I'm living in a 4 story mansion, I can definitely down with that way of thinking.

I can understand why he chose to do it. I don’t believe he was innocent but also just from the evidence I heard on this I believe there could have been reasonable doubt. I don’t think he should have gotten the death penalty. Life in prison would have sufficed. I’m very glad they found the wife innocent. I don’t think she had anything to do with it. I was surprised they arrested her. But I think he chose to kill him self because he didn’t want to give them the satisfaction and wanted to go out on his own terms. He also may have thought it’d be less painful. Hanging is quick if done right and you instantly break your neck but if not you slowly choke to death.

That’s what I said. I’m not convinced from the evidence I heard on this that he was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. I don’t believe the wife did it. I was glad she was acquitted. I was surprised she was arrested. It’s pretty clear that it was one of them because they were the only two people home. So I guess I lean more on him than her but because I can’t be sure that’s all the reasonable doubt I need.

Man, it took Mr. Twitchell to tell everything about what happened to Mrs. Hill and that the real culprit is HIS WIFE. Yes, he was an accomplice in committing the crime but he was shunned by the public because they already jumped to conclusions that Mr. Twitchell committed the crime. It's just sad that we never know what happened to his wife, after he took his own life before his scheduled execution.

The prosecution said he bludgeoned her with the poker, threw her out the window, then went to bed. With blood all over his nightclothes? If that were the case, he would have been covered in blood when he let the maid in at 9:30. Obviously he wasn't covered in blood until after he carried the body into the kitchen or the maid would have mentioned it, certainly. Curious!
@douglasbubbletrousers4763
@douglasbubbletrousers4763 3 жыл бұрын
True, good point! Although they could rebuff back that the maid had placed a lot of emphasis on just how abnormally dark it was in the house in her recollection of that night. This is one case where I legitimately don’t know what to think, and that’s even more surprising because it seems like such a simple case at first glance

Mr. and Mrs.Twitchell. It is very rare and sad to learn of a case where both are thrown under the bus, or carriage for that matter. George tried and failed with his business ventures, which seemed like innovative ideas to help people and other businesses. I think that despite George’s enthusiasm, he seemed flighty and overconfident. He had debts as a result. His wife didn’t have many worries. Who killed Mrs. Hill? I believe George did it. It takes a lot of rage and strength to carry out this deadly attack. Why would George’s wife kill her own mother? It makes no sense. Money is, as they say, “The root of all evil.” Family and money can become a recipe for disaster. Thanks for the case. Stay safe.

@meemurthelemur4811
@meemurthelemur4811 3 жыл бұрын
It may have been a last ditch effort to save his own life. Requests for appeal and clemency denied, his only hope was to cast blame elsewhere. On the other hand, perhaps figuring his fate was sealed, he wanted to make a confession so that the truth would at least be heard. I don't think he ever held the idea that his wife would ever face conviction tho.
@goodvibes5220
@goodvibes5220 3 жыл бұрын
I was wondering, too, whether he really was guilty. His wife might have gotten off free, just because she was a woman and people didn’t really think women capable of such acts. And he was blamed, just because he was the man? (Saying this as a woman myself)

@@meemurthelemur4811 the prosecution sometimes had a hard job of convicting a woman of murder in the first place, depending on how the crime was carried out. I'll bet there was a lot of poker bashing in those days. Sitting sedately darning his socks (by the hearth) one wrong word... Whack! 😵

A most enjoyable murder mystery BC, thank you! It was atmospheric with its artwork and descriptions of there being no gas lamps on or candles lit. I imagined dark shadows and creaky floorboards, and wasn't sure what was going to happen until the end. The blood splatter patterns were an interesting detail, and a code yet to be deciphered at the time. If they'd invented the boardgame 'Cluedo' in 1860, one of the implements would have been 'the poker'. And something arsenic related. I still feel unsettled about George's death. I've listened to the story four times so far. Do we actually have two murders in one story? Do we have only one murderer? Very good work BC.

It was interesting to hear about a case with a somewhat different outcome in the end, and I'd like to hear more about cases where the accused might either narrowly escape the hangman or be found not guilty..

Thank you for the consistently wonderful docs and your top research. Why do I half believe this guy though? Like he was waiting for his wife to confess and at the last moment, when he knew that wasn't coming, he took poison? More questions than answers with this one, thanks for speaking about it

Yeah of course it is they can never be trusted. But this butler would have had to be really cunning because he was at church with the rest of the staff when the murder took place. Of course being in 2 places at the same time is nothing for the butler.

What a flìmsy case against the poor man, as others have indicated. No one ever found out who enabled Goering's suicide in prison, either. Mysteries for ever, I suppose.

It's actually so sad that he had died especially him being innocent. Ya know, if there had been "correct" forensics or should I say "modern" forensics we could have caught the right individual.
