I’m glad you reviewed this film. I recently just watched it, so it’s very fresh in my mind. My analysis of this film was that reincarnated “Sean” was a allegory for grief. Grief comes out of nowhere like a flu. The reincarnated “Sean” had no memory of his affair. That was incredibly revealing to the plot, because it symbolized the was the memory Sean left for Anna, a faithful husband who loved her dearly. In reality there was an affair happening behind her back. The film is simply exploring the effects of grief.

Really enjoy that perspective! The film really had an impact on me. I felt so much hurt for Nicole Kidman's character but as the film progressed I found myself hurting for Sean's character equally as much. If the circumstances were real, to be a child and have those memories of another person's life and trying to understand and comprehend it would be so painful. Just a brilliant film.

I'm so happy you got around to reviewing this! I think I commented about it on your video about the saddest films because I had watched it a few months ago and it's still on my mind. It's interesting, sometimes I can be on the critical side of taboo films and I wonder about their purpose/impact within the realm of commentary AND art. There are films that I believe have the potential to do societal damage and it outweighs its benefit of entertainment and so on (I have an intense distaste for Three Billboards). But I was actually surprised when I read a lot of reviews from people who were completely against the film. Which is a little naive of me, but I think it's proof of how engrossed I was in the story, that I never thought about how much it could rile people up. The complete discomfort I felt was also balanced with almost enlightenment into the depths of grief that a person can drown in. I think it genuinely affected the scope of my empathy for the better, but in no shape or form misled me to overlook the horror of what Sean (child) is experiencing. I think the final scene permanently impacted me like few films have, and it's incredible that a fictional film could break my heart so painfully. Have you ever heard of Womb (2010) with Eva Green and Matt Smith? I grew up as a massive Doctor Who fan and have always loved Eva, so I stumbled across it like ten years ago. It could be described as the fraternal twin of Birth (but not nearly as good, so I'm not encouraging you to race off and watch it). It certainly explores similar themes but expands on the ethical dilemmas by involving cloning. Question; do you use Letterboxd, or is KZbin your main outlet for film? I've been an avid Letterboxd user for years so I'm always looking for more people with similar taste to follow.

It is a very sad movie. I found myself initially just thinking about the impact on Nicole Kidman's character, but as the film progressed I couldn't stop thinking about the pain it was causing this child. Especially if what is occurring is real having these thoughts in your head and seeing another person's life entirely would be confusing and painful. I think its interesting when it comes to taboo subjects in film, because I truly thinking diving into the darker psyche of the human condition is fascinating and we can learn a lot from it. People are afraid of challenging themselves often times though and I think that's why something like this would cause them to be put off. I have not heard of Womb but I too am a huge Doctor Who fan so that sounds right up my alley. I will check it out. I'm a huge letterboxd fan! I log every movie and spend way too much time on it haha. My favorite movie of the 2000s by a mile. Haunting, beautiful. I do not understand why Kidman and especially Anne Heche did not win every acting award on the planet for this.
