Sonic movie is more of a Jim Carry movie with Sonic in it rather than an actual Sonic movie.. you can remove Sonic in that film & replace with an alien & it would still work but the you can't with Mario since it is an actual Super Mario movie..

I think the issue with the 93 movie was that Nintendo wasn't involved enough, and so in the 2023 movie Nintendo was like "all right this time let me be involved", thus why the new movie did great

I think it had more to do with the fact they gave the license to executives who knew nothing of the IP. Sounds familiar with Disney in regards to the MCU.
