One of the things the later sequels failed to capture was the extreme PTSD aspect. Reese was constantly jumpy. He's a guy who hadn't had a good night's sleep or decent meal his whole life and to whom the sound of a dog barking meant death was on the way. He was not a ripped, snarky Jai Courtney. In T2, Sarah Conner was seriously messed up. She knew the future was f'd and her only option was to push herself so she could protect and train her son. She berated her son for being brave, loyal, and loving by saving her. She was tough on the outside, but broken on the inside.

That's true. When the characters take the story very seriously and show signs of accumulated stress, it tells us, the audience, that the situation is not safe and things may go bad. When the characters don't show signs of stress, it tells us that the story and the stakes are who gives a fuck.....
@vilefly3 жыл бұрын
I agree. I was hoping for a terminator movie set in the future, battling machines with clever human strategy and tactics.....ending with the time displacement scene.....and stopping there. Hoped for a platoon of soldiers getting through more futuristic PTSD moments and helping each other overcome them to defeat mankind's arch-nemesis. No more time travel crap because the prototype was destroyed when Reese was sent in the first movie. Would have to fix a temporal problem created in the original storyline by saying something like, "The temporal field around the chamber insulated us from changes in the timeline, so we could send Reese in after the terminator and still exist to do so. Only then can we turn it off." I guess they are just too young to know what they are doing with something older than the screen writers are. FML.

I really wanted the prequel film to work because it was the only one that wasn't doing the same tired time travel story and I think we all (me still) want to see the future war between mankind and the machines but I can't call salvation a good movie nothing really happens with the plot and John Connor isn't even in charge.
@rubix41952 жыл бұрын
Seriously what everyone actually wanted was something akin to Terminator: Future War (based on Kyle's visions) as a prequel: all the crapworld, grimdark, crawling on the ground with the rats with humanity getting it's ass kicked again and again before John Connor finally giving everyone the first ray of hope in showing Skynet could be defeated by rallying humanity. Every portrayal beyond T1 and T2 of the Future War period is too clean, full of CGI with humanity standing their ground to the vastly superior Skynet and less of a really horrific and brutal meat grinder with John Connor the only "glue" holding what is the last strands of humanity together. True it wouldn't be mass appeal but, for the dedicated fans, it would be gold.

@@harrymills2770 By all rights and common sence, it was. But this can be fixed rather easily, just by adding the original ending of T2. @user-jh6kx1fw9h2 жыл бұрын
@Joe Connor not being in charge makes sense, in a way, because -for example- the machines would keep sending cruise missiles to any potential location... This would also make the future war -somewhat- difficult to conceptualize, and film. For sure, humans would need a nuclear power plant as a power source for any laser, or -magnetic- rail-gun defenses - and that would, in turn, create clear targets... You know, or humans would need constant resources and means of production in order to be able to manufacture missile defenses; and, also, there wouldn't be much walking-around on the surface going on: if the machines can (self-replicate and) build Terminators, and other tech (such as weapons, and other), then they'd be able to -also- have a constant supply of nuclear weapons - which would be raining down all over the place, right?

To be fair to Emilia Clarke, she's given honest post-film interviews detailing some of the issues they encountered making this T: Genisys. "News of the rocky production traveled, and Clarke says the crew on the famously disastrous Fantastic Four, which was filming nearby, even had jackets made that read, AT LEAST WE’RE NOT ON TERMINATOR. “Just to give you a summary,” she says, laughing." As for Sophie Turner and Emilia Clarke, remember back when television actors stuck to television roles and only the exceptional made the big leap to the big screen? Now it's like if you're part of a remotely successful TV show you're automatically expect to land a big blockbuster role. I like Emilia and Sophie but they are not great actors. But if you see Peter Dinklage or Charles Dance on the big screen it's like they belong there.

If you went back and looked at the original, you'd notice that Kyle Reese looks exactly like the kind of person that would come from a war-torn future: emaciated, scarred, beaten and tired. They really went through the effort of creating a sense of verisimilitude and selling the idea that Kyle's future really took its toll on him. And of course, despite spending his whole life fighting off deadly androids, he treated even a single T-800 with dead seriousness because he knew exactly what they were capable of. Meanwhile, Jai Courtney looks buff, hale and without even a scratch or bruise on him. There's no way in hell that guy could convince you he's a soldier from a ravaged world where he'd most likely live off of rations and fight dangerous androids on a daily basis. They couldn't even get such minor details as "looking like a battle-scarred soldier" right. Then again, they couldn't even get those 3 street punks to look right so why am I even surprised? And of course, the guy seems borderline nonplussed when confronted with not only a T-800 but even the more advanced T-1000, both of whom took an entire movie to put down respectively, whereas here they're dispatched with barely any effort at all. Hell, even Salvation handled it better, considering how hard it was to put that one T-800 down. This movie was just a complete mess.

Terminator salvations has to be the 3rd best movie of that series. Having it be about the humans vs machines is really the only thing that they hadn’t covered in the franchise. One of Hamilton's strong points for the role was that she was ordinary-looking, which added to the gritty realism element. Clarke is too cute for that. Then Hamilton took several levels in hardcore for T2, and it SHOWED. I doubt many female actors could do that, especially ones who can't risk spoiling their ability to play cheerleaders and such.

Just wanted to point out that the T1 Kyle Reese wasn't scrawny nor skinny. He was in peak form, lean AND strong, just like an efficient soldier would be. The modern hyper jacked look is just a temporary deformation of the understanding of human perfection, much like the baboonish lips many girls aspire to. I would much rather have an army of fit, fast and resilient soldiers than an army I must provide 10k calories a day for each soldier, two workouts plus the time required for recovery and plenty of mirrors so they can check on their progress.

As someone who has conceived of sci-fi scenarios, I think I see a way to finally give the Terminator franchise a decent burial. Consider this: "T1" had the machines going back in time, to stop the resistance from ever forming. "T2" had the humans of the present trying to stop the machines from ever being built. This resulted in an endless time loop. One person or company may be prevented from building the machine---only to find that someone else built it, under a different name ("Skynet", "Genisys", "Legion", etc). The technology is already out there, just waiting for someone to pick it up. How to solve this? Possibly, allow the machine to be built, but ensure that it's programming is different. Perhaps, instead of a prime directive of "Neutralize the Enemy", maybe, "Protect Humanity". Or, before allowing the machine to take control of anything, have it run through a series of simulations, so that it comes to a realization---similar to WOPR in "War Games". This would not be an action flick, but more of a psychological thriller with intrigue and deep philosophical questions. The franchise could then be put to bed, in perpetuity. ---Just a thought.

The brilliance of the first Terminator is seriously underrated, as much as I love T2, T1 works best on its own. It's really about Skynet, an AI trying to win a war against a mysterious human leader that came out of nowhere-he's unpredictable, and somehow knows how to hit Skynet exactly when and where. It decides the best way to eliminate him is to go back in time to root him out before he festers, but in doing so, it facilitates his birth and thus assuring its own demise. The time paradox is not a plot hole at all but a feature. The time loop closes perfectly at the end of T1 and makes it one of the best sci-fi movies ever made.

Watch T2 again. Robert Patrick trained himself to not blink for the film to make his terminator all the more convincing.

"The Sarah Connor Chronicles"" TV series was actually pretty decent, one of the few Terminator spinoffs to carry its own weight. Naturally it got cancelled. Drinker should do a review of that.

I’m happy that you made this video because I want to go see this movie in theaters with my fiancé and I fell asleep I honestly don’t remember 3/4 of the movie in fact all the explosions woke me up and I would look and go ‘that’s cool’ and fall asleep again and then I woke up and found out John Connor was a terminator and then felt no need to stay awake for the rest of the movie.
@Rx37Legacy3 жыл бұрын
How about the glaring plothole that is: Sarah and Kyle never slept together in 1984 but jumped straight to 2017, thus John was never born -> Skynet wins by default? The Sarah Connor Chronicles is the only "thing" that managed to capture the oldschool Terminator. Shame it had to end so early.

"I've said it before that the Terminator really isn't a concept that can support a big ongoing franchises like this" - so true. And what's been forgotten is that T1 was a stalker movie with a twist, T2 was an action movie based on the premise of T1 without explaining too much backstory. Terminator in essence is a horror-style sci-fi 'franchise', not a bigger world that needed explanation. But hey, I liked Terminator Salvation so what do I know?

I too liked Salvation at first. Bought the dvd upon release. Now it just fades into the pit of unappealing Sam Worthington movies we own but never watch again. The guy is an absolute block of wood. Bale didn't exactly carry the dead weight either. I've thought a lot about what I would do with Salvation if it were my own to make. I would have had it be the story of John Connor starting the resistance from the ground up. The flying carrier ship was super cool so I would keep that and all its robotic crew that break down to the motorcycle level. I would have the carrier ship be hunting down John Connor and he would come across pockets of survivors that either tell him to leave them alone or join up with him to help take down the carrier at the end. Would have had Anton Yelchin play the part of John Connor because he's actually watchable. RIP

Salvation tried to take the series into the future war I honestly think it's the only logical place to go after T2, and three other movies seem to confirm that Hell, when I heard T2 was happening, I assumed it would be set in the future war

They make an effort to make the Terminator look 100% like it did in Terminator 1, but made zero effort to make Sara and Kyle look like they did in the original movie. Strange, and confusing at first.

After watching Genisys I just wrote it off as non-canon. I didn't even bother with Dark Fate. T3 and Salvation weren't good, but they're mostly harmless to the franchise as a whole. Still, the series should've stopped after 2.

@@EliWintercross Salvation has a good concept. Finally ditching the time travel/chase concept from the first three movies, it was starting to get really stale by T3. Focusing on the war. The execution was pretty bad though.

At least T3 followed T2 and didn't try to retcon the series. Also, you could tell they were really trying to make a good movie with it. There were some great ideas and moments, but it just couldn't live up to the first two movies. Everything after was just nothing more than cash grab.

I enjoyed the Terminator movies all the way up to Salvation, and I agree; they were mostly harmless. Genisys was just an absolute train-wreck, employing a 'scorched earth policy' to the previous movies and just making everything way too confusing and trying to do too much. I would've loved to see this story from Skynet's side, and hear Skynet's thoughts; see the story from the Machine's side and erasing Humanity for their own good. That would have been evil and I would've enjoyed every second of it!

9:51 - In defense of the ridiculous coincidences, I think that's more of a statement on how Time Travel works, that by going back in time, you're pre-determined to do things that from the other side seems like a coincidence. But in reality, it's the time travel that ensures those things happen, like fate. I also think, beyond the negative feedback from longtime fans, this installment of the terminator was more like a reimagining of the time travel laws within the series than the 'next stage in the saga' that fans wanted.
@gordondavis61683 жыл бұрын
The whole point of the first Terminator film was that Skynet was doing a Hail Mary pass - sending one machine back in time to stop defeat, and Reese says that Skynet sent back one machine. Now, Terminator 2 was such a good film that I didn’t mind that Cameron went back to the well one more time. However, now it is ridiculous with multiple terminators coming back in time through multiple universes. What is the point if our heroes win in this movie, another terminator will come. It is as story-defeating as if the Empire had 600 Death Stars.

T2 is an amazing film. That being said, the logic that the T1000 was not sent initially or even as a counterpart to the first Terminator doesn't make any logical sense for the insane A.I. that Skynet is. You can effectively rip apart the entire storyline if you really wanted to. Genysis is not amazing, I just really enjoy that they tried to tie it back to the original two.

The idea that this franchise doesn't have anything more to offer is shown to be clearly untrue by a watch of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles or by reading the Dark Horse comics from the 90s. It had plenty to offer; the challenge just wasn't met by the people in charge of it.
