Another fine example on how CRKT brings us fantastic designs through collaborations with well know people in the Maker/military community. The Skeggox, the Old Norse word for "bearded axe", is a modern iteration of the first-century Scandinavian weapon. For those of you that do not know, James Williams has this axe using a customer maker “Winkler Knives” which can be seen here:
williamsbladedesign.com/colle...
Now, if you are on a budget but still want the styling of the original you can find the Skeggox on many of the well known purchasing websites to include the CRKT website here:
www.crkt.com/shop/whats-new/s...
James Williams has done many other collaborations with Crkt and is how I initially found out about him and you can see some of my collection from both Crkt and Williams blade design here:

This axe is a slicer and it’s ergonomics are fantastic and is priced reasonably. I hope you enjoyed the video and Have A K ife Day

Damn YOU!!!! Just ordered one from CRKT. I will also be going to James’ site and order one there. I teach a style - Sei SHi Ryu and have bought several Dai Sho from Bugei (james) and also met him once on the road when I was a LEO instructor. I too have several of his including the first gen Hissatsu and then the folder among others ( I have a thing for Japanese style blades). I regularly use my Cold Steel Master (San Mai) for bushcraft. Pelple look at me funny but it is truly functional . Anyway, I enjoy the videos and the fact that you are not a leg and give great info.

Also, thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, “for me” he doesn’t live in California anymore. Not that I can say that I blame him. I did get to see him at a blade show west once. Really interesting guy. I also have a love for cold steel’s Japanese style tanto blades. One of these days I hope to be able to go back to Japan with my wife and visit their knife making region.

Thanks! Been online-shopping today and ordered my Skeggox a few hours ago. This product has just recently become available in my country. Btw. it'll be my first CRKT product. I'm living in Europe, therefore I mostly use products by european manufacturers (Fällkniven, Extrema Ratio, Mora, Opinel, Victorinox, etc.). It's been a hard decision buying a hatchet for outdoor use, as there is some weight-limit I've set for myself regarding my equipment. Originally I wanted to buy a hatchet with max. 600 grams, revised this to 680 grams later. The Skeggox weighs a little bit more, for sure ... 740 grams. I'm really looking forward to check out how this Skeggox will perform, as I usually do not carry a hatchet. I usually carry a fixed blade in combination with a multitool, a 300 mm folding saw and a folding shovel aka. folding field spade, or a Kukri instead of the shovel / spade. Whatsoever. The plan is to have 3 types of equipment: Prepper, Survivor and Warrior. Prepper equipment will be as light as possible and as unobtrusive as possible. Survivor will be based on mitlitary-equipment, carrying most of my essential gear on my vest and webbing gear, only the rucksack is a small one. Warrior is equivalent to Survivor albeit a much heavier backpack.

@@haveaknifeday Sorry for the delay. Outstanding piece of gear. I ordered another one right away, just to have one for spare in stash. I have small hands and therefore one of the first things I did was screwing off the scales. It is skeletonized underneath... perfect for a really tight Paracord-wrap. Wow! I did a Paracord-wrap on the handle of mine with Paracord that offers fishing-line and tinder. Besides mentioned this axe / hatchet comes extremely sharp from factory. Sharper then many knives I got.

This Saturday I'll be going to a place called, "Stumpy's" to throw the Skeggox. Bear with me, My mother passed last Sunday and we are making her arrangements. Also, if you could get me the specifics of what your husband is looking to use it for, other than throwing I will see if I can make it to an appropriately wooded area. I currently live in a condo in a very urban area of Southern California. Mind you I necessarily will not be looking to take any living trees because we need as much as we can get here lol.

Thank you for the review. Several questions: 1) Do the scales perfectly fit the tang, or is there a ridge you feel when in your hand? It appears to have a ridge, and I was curious of your thoughts. 2) Is the poll hardened, or useful for anything? The thickness appears to be the same as the entire head, which seems unusual for an axe. 3) Is it any good for throwing? Thank you, sir!

The scales fit nicely to the tang, there is a bit of the tang that is above the scales.

The poll hardened? Very good question. Nowhere that I could find is there a hint of where the hardening is. The poll doesn’t flare and should be used with a hardness. You could use it to hammer some tent pegs just watch that edge as you pull it back when swinging.
@haveaknifeday

I’ve heard this edge referee to as like being a knife. Knowing who designed the axe I could see this being used as a fighting axe. This is because of blade geometry. At the same time, if you are being attacked by tree people you could still get the job done.

Its a nice Hatchet, but pretty much useless for every day camp chores. Well I guess you could chop wood with it, but its really too light and you will wear yourself out using it. Looks like its more of a "Tactical" tool. So not for me. I've got several Tomahawks that I think would be better camp tools. But, each to their own. Stay sharp.

I do like a guy by the name of Huell Howser who always brought a light hearted view of what he was showing then of course Air Force veteran Bob Ross who would if he was so inclined talk about happy little knives. But to each their own. Thank you for your observation and I’ll take things into consideration.
