At this point I'm baffled with Hollywood still trying to make the crow a multi billion dollar franchise, when it seems like the universe is telling them "guys, please stop, let the crow rest, along with Brandon"
@Kaden102 жыл бұрын
Well they should at least leave Eric's story alone and do what the other movies did, tell an original story with a new cast of characters, while keeping the themes of deep sadness and the need for vengeance that James O'barr demonstrated in his comic.
@maxxdahl60622 жыл бұрын
I actually wouldn't mind a reboot, IF, and ONLY if it's a more straight adaption of that first comic. The brandon lee movie didn't even really try to adapt it other than borrowing the characters names and look, and then was it's complete own, different thing after that. Hell they would be so different, you could probably slightly rename the characters and no one would know any different.

@@Kaden10 O'Barr did other books featuring the crow theme but never returned to Eric. The story begins with a real-life death--that of Obarr's girlfriend "the real Shelley" at the hands of a drunk driver. The death of Brandon Lee during the filming only adds to tragedy upon tragedy.

The Crow has a premise that can lend itself to so many stories. Eric's story doesn't need to be remade. All you need for a Crow story is a love story, doesn't have to be romantic, and for the victim to return to deal vengeance yes, but also embody grief, frustration. Its a power fantasy for the heart-broken. There are so many Crow stories told in comics and short stories that show that it can work without Eric and his story.

Everything in this film evokes a certain moody, gothic-atmosphere. In fact, the way the city of Detroit is visually portrayed would also make a pretty damned good Gotham! Lee was lightning in a bottle as the Crow. Studio's are in business to make money and i'm cool with that concept. Sometimes you need to realize that art is something to be respected and nobody was gonna step into Lee's character and be able to pull that off. These lousy remakes really just saw to it that nobody with other high concepts or worthy ideas was ever going to get an opportunity to make their own art on the big screen, ala the bride concept and others.

I hope the remake never happens. The Crow DOES NOT need to be remade or revisioned. Within the first minute of this video I am given a feeling that I legitimately haven't experienced in years. That of the existence of another genuine Crow fan. I was 14 when the movie was released, and the Crow quickly became my primary interest in the world of fiction. It was my favorite movie and still remains one of my very favorites to this day. Admittedly due in no small part to the initial impact it had on me and the timing of who I was when I first saw it. Since then, every movie, every comic book, every novel, every soundtrack or score album ... everything to do with The Crow became a must have for me. Down to the almost unplayable City of Angels video game. Some entires in the franchise were definitely better than others (to put it politely). In more recent years the interest has become less rabid, but it still holds an uneraseable place in my heart. Now it is relegated to occasional rewatches or rereads, attending the one night only 25th anniversary re-release in theaters, and keeping up with the current comic runs from IDW. I am interested to see if this most recent attempt at a reboot will happen. And if so, what they'll create. I'm hopeful. It would be hard for them to do worse than the third and fourth movies (COA eventually grew on me). Which were even more disappointing because they were each based on novels that were way better.

What a great documentary. Thank you for this original longform essay, which must have been a tonne of work. I read about Brandon's death in 93 in a Karate magazine. Despite the tragedy of it all, I was intrigued by this film, 'The Crow'. I remember dragging a date to see it in the summer of '94 when I was just 16. It affected me so much I ended up dressing as The Crow in London goth clubs all of that summer. Most people had no idea who I was, until the film broke through in late summer. I think Brandon had a magic to him, something that can't really be replicated. He was born with it - that gift his father also had. I'm extremely circumspect about this newly announced film with Bill Skasgaard - he's a fine actor, but I worry they're selecting him, and this project, for the wrong reasons.

I dunno, but there's just something about this franchise, ever since Brandon's unexpected death, it's cast a dark cloud over The Crow, at least for someone like me, a Gen Xer. Years ago, I had read from James O'Barr himself, the creator of The Crow comic book and its characters, that some time after Brandon's death, James went over to visit Lee's former fiancée, Eliza Hutton, and after noticing her wedding dress still in her room displayed on a mannequin, he wished he never created the character. He felt guilt, but of course, he wasn't to blame. And when another more recent and needlessly tragic accidental shooting on the set of the Alec Baldwin film Rust took place, it brings that dark memory, of my hearing about Lee's death over the radio, as I was working, back to the fore again. *The Crow* on film, is Brandon Lee's alone, and as with Brandon, please let it rest in peace.

This film had such a brilliant cast and each small nuance in the scene in which Eric visited Sargent Albrecht apartment truly adds something incredible and unique to the atmosphere of the story. From Eric's kindhearted and softspoken interaction with Sargent Albrecht, to Albrecht's concern for Eric after he fell back in sadness and bereavement after he had seen what had happened to Shelley through his eyes. It truly seemed like they and Sarah would have been such a happily bonded trio of good friends and they would have been such a beautiful found family had Eric had more time. Ernie Hudson's acting steers the emotional message of the film and his quiet determination and strength truly parallel the essence of who Eric is. I believe that something beautiful about the film is that Eric can see himself reflected in each person that he interacts with as his journey unfolds. Sarah Mohr represents his devotion to his family and the immense grief and longing that he feels in refusing to let go of the objects and things which tie him to his mortal past and identity (Sarah can also represent the innocence of Eric and Shelley's relationship and the almost magical quality of their love), Sargent Albrecht represents his necessity for justice and compassion as well as the undercurrents of remorse as Albrecht is getting divorced from his wife and Eric regrets that he didn't seem to value Shelley's empathy and gentle spirit as she always found amazement and wonder in the seemingly trivial things in life (Albrecht can also represent how Eric was judged because he differed from the status quo and chose to be kind to others and in how in spite of the violent nature of his mission, at its core it is ultimately the pursuit of justice, given that Albrecht is a kind and compassionate man who is shamed for his desire to help others amid a profession which constantly exposes him to cruel events, and Darla represents the almost metaphorical and unwavering addiction to his mission which is his only momentary focus. I also find it very beautiful that Eric and Shelley's favorite holiday was Halloween and as they were both judged on a daily basis, Halloween provided them with the necessary strength and courage to celebrate their authenticity and love for each other. Furthermore, this has a much greater significance as Eric is one of the most genuine characters in the film and his intentions are purely from a justice-seeking standpoint, however at his core, he is a beautiful and kindhearted soul who does not use The Crow persona as a means to be disengenuous with himself, rather that it is an outlet for him to express his deepest emotions and the most central pillars of himself. In other words his facepaint which is modelled after the Irony Mask in their home does not mask who he is, rather it represents the most fullest expresssion of his identity. I also believe that Top Dollar is a dark mirror of who Eric could have become had he permitted for his actions to be solely guided by revenge and not love. I also find it very interesting that Sarah canonically became a fine and Tattoo Artist in the future as her mother was addicted to intra-veinous drugs and she chose to pursue a career path in which the same tool that had claimed her mother's life could be used as a means of positive artistic creation and therefore, she used an emotionally challenging symbol from her family's past (a needle) and used it to do something productive and beautiful with her life and completely subverted its meaning, just as Eric would have wanted.

I'll be honest I do believe there can be another great crow story, I loved the idea of the female crow who got her happiest moment stolen from her. The problem is you have all these celebrities and directors are completely out of their mind and trying to do to much to script the point you barely can recognize it as a crow film. The crow is supposed to be a symbol of the wronged, revenge, grief and resolve. Not this edgy satanic psycho who kills people for the hell of it or this rapper who is trying to wage a underworld war against another rapper. The problem with the movies that did somewhat follow the formula was their over the top edgy looking sets and they tried to hard to imitate the original instead of being an original story that is inspired by the original.

-One of the details that I have now realized nearly thirty years ensuing the release of this soulful and spiritually enlightening magnum opus of a film adaptation is that in the scene in which Eric is unknowingly preparing for the showdown at the Detroit cathedral and attempts to say his final goodbyes to the character of Sarah Mohr wherein he then proceeds to gift her Shelly Webster's semi-traditional Celtic engagement ring, that the ring in question was hanging from a guitar string and not a chain. This particular detail was certifiably proposed by the masterful Brandon Lee himself to furthermore develop the importance of Eric's connection to music as an essential part of his life and his spiritual and romantic affinity to Shelley which is one of the most beautifully subtle demonstrations of his character development. The marriage between the ring and the guitar string literally serves as a physical manifestation of Eric's now long-forlorn aspirations, his losses and the hope that he still holds onto of reuniting with his love. It additionally represents the very things that he has sacrificed and unwantedly left behind, as well as the two most important things in his personal life: the love he has for Shelley and the dream of wanting to become forever bound to her through marriage and his musical gifts which sentimentally and poetically connect him to Shelley, his one and only inspiration. Therefore when Eric both symbolically and literally gifts Sarah with the only thing that connects him to his previous life, this ring hanging from a now deteriorated and rusted string, he is visually and metaphorically passing the torch to her, so that she may never forget that these seemingly trivial hopes, enduring dreams and experiences are now forevermore a part of her own journey and the path she must choose to embark upon. Their pain, their desires, their love now shroud and accompany her in this next transitional stage, as both Eric and Shelley were the only positive parental figures that Sarah had ever had before Darla's redemption. Eric sees himself reflected in Sarah and believes that she posesses the potential to pave her own destiny, one which is benevolent and just in spite of the many difficulties which had waned her self-belief and perceptions of the world. Sarah is truly Eric's successor in virtually every way possible and it is natural for an adult Sarah to inherit both Eric's solipsitic nihilism and idealism and Shelley's vitality and faith in people. I believe that in another reality, they would have been the happiest family there was, and although I believe that Vincent Perez and Mia Kirschner had such a strong romantic connection, their relationship dynamic felt incredibly rushed in 'The Crow: City of Angels', in which I feel that Sarah should have either become a heavily involved companion or another iteration of The Crow mantle in of itself. She should have additionally been the main character and the film could have followed up upon the grief and trauma she experienced in having lost the people who meant the most to her, experiencing a personal tragedy with Sargent Albrecht as her mentor.

Yep I read she was supposed to be the female crow. :(

@@tiaferrandino4881 Indeed, its a very devastating loss of storytelling opportunities. I would have completely loved to have seen Mia Kirschner as the leading lady of a "The Crow: Bride" film or adaptation or in the original vision for "The Crow: City of Angels" with Alex Proyas returning to the directorial helm for both respective projects and Ernie Hudson returning in some form to perhaps connect him to the original film. Perhaps the case of the Bride was one that Sargent Albrecht had just so happened to have stumbled upon after having helped Eric and Shelley find closure and ascend into the afterlife and once he became captain of the Detroit Police Department, he could have also perhaps become a little more open-minded in opening a private investigation firm specialized in investigating the different supernatural Crow avatars who succeeded Eric, Sarah and Ashe, making him play an essential role in connecting each of the respective films as though they were an anthology series much like the graphic novels or we could additionally see that a now adult Sarah would become a guide for the new generation of Crow avatars, esentially taking after Sargent Albrecht and his legacy. I would like to think that the reason why Sarah was able to have a prosperous independent career as both a fine artist and tattoo artist was because of the fact that Sarah was heavily inspired by Eric and his artistic abilities and by Shelley's affinity for photography and catalogue collecting which is alluded to in the film, as well as by their tremendous passion for tenants rights and social advocacy. Perhaps she had always had this innate talent for illustration and painting, but because of Eric and Shelley's deaths, she had become so consumed by her own grief that she could not find it within herself to return to the pen and paper, until Sargent Albrecht saw just how talented she was and was inspired to take it upon himself to finance her education elsewhere in order to give her a better and more optimistic future, being willing to help her relocate across the country, further allowing her to develop her artistic aptitudes and to create hauntingly beautiful compositions that are thematically similar to Erics song-lyrics, just plasmated in different formats. I believe that after everything that Eric, Sargent Albrecht and Sarah had gone through together that Sargent Albrecht became the surrogate father figure that Eric had once been to her in life.

Just a small update they signed Rupert Sanders to direct (ghost in the shell, Snow White and huntsman) with Bill Skarsgard (Pennywise) to star in it (as of 04/2022). We’ll see how long this lasts tho.

What most people don’t talk about enough is there’s a SECOND victim to the utter carelessness of the gun prop handlers. (They literally had ONE f’ing job!.. make sure the rounds are empty… That’s all they had to do and they failed)….And That’s Michael Massy. He was the actor who (in advertently) shot Brandon. This was the end of his dreams as well… He continued to act in bit parts but in every interview and autograph signing journalists and fans alike would always ask him how he felt about “Killing Brandon Lee“ (as if he did it on purpose)… he NEVER could bring himself to watch the movie… His whole life went by, and he couldn’t bring himself to watch it. He never truly recovered from the misappropriated quilt and shame and he died young. It’s very tragic because it is 100% not his fault. it was one bullet, but it killed two people… The second person just took longer to die 😢 RIP Brandon and Michael.

when seeing this movie in the theater back in the day with friends we all were left with the feeling we had just witnessed an incredibly special film and every Halloween since the crow is my go too Halloween movie, (it's in good company with a number of my other sessional favorites) I love everything about this movie the dark gothic vibe, the music and brandon Lee's unforgettable performance it's as much of a classic as the Warriors or they live, some movies should just be left alone.

Looking at the Jason Momoa concept my first thoughts were: You say Eric Draven, The Crow. But I see the Main Man, Lobo. We need a Lobo movie with this guy.

I think The Bride would have been a better idea for the new movie instead of a remake. Really interesting.

A great memory of a 13yr. old me going with my older brother and his crew to see the original on the big screen. Eventually a g/f of his wound up giving me my own copy of the soundtrack, which she slipped me undercover while working at SUNCOAST VIDEO (RIP). Man what a great time for R+R🤘
