I was born in 1957 and spent part of my boyhood (ages 9-15) in British public schools )I was American, now Canadian) so you might have just said I was a little English boy (that's what they were called back then-the English-) and I remember the newsreels and their endless music and we had to sing all sorts of hymns (which I loved) like "Did those feet in ancient times" and "All things bright and beautiful"-most nauseatingly religious, but I had to go to goddamn church EVERY SUNDAY and later, EVERY DAY (Charterhouse) and I must say, that was easily the most nauseating aspect of being an English schoolboy . . . BUT I loved the queen! We all did! And I actually SHOOK PRINCE PHILIP'S HAND when he came to my school (Charterhouse) in about 1973. I'm watching The Crown for the second time, and it was great to watch the old Pathé newsreels-how the euphemism for "cancer" was "serious illness" and how EVERYBODY and most probably their dogs, SMOKED. Cigarettes killed most of the older royal family, a fact most people don't realise. Thank god I gave up in 1984.

In so many new Hollywood movies people look like mannequins; here you have people. And I like that they are such wonderful actors. They can play, like really play. I feel each and every character, their emotions, I feel what they feel. I gave up on Hollywood movies long time ago. This is superb

It is really a miracle that when all monarchies of Europe fell every right, left and center the British monarchy survived. Indeed, what a glorious history that runs back a 1000 years, all most every corner of this world is influenced by the British in one way or the other. I see no harm in having a constitutional monarchy. How I wish I was born a Brit. God Save the Queen!
@ms_scribbles7 жыл бұрын
I'd suggest the David Starkey documentary series "Monarchy". It does a pretty good job of showing how the slight difference in the British monarchy made it last, even despite the civil war that had temporarily gotten rid of it. It goes into a lot of detail, showing the lives of every king and queen, how they succeeded, how they failed, and how the British monarchy is very different from the "absolute monarchy" that eventually crumbled in most parts of Europe. It's like that old saying that the tighter you hold onto something, the easier it slips through your fingers.
@veralenora73685 жыл бұрын
The Windsors have sucked millions, maybe billions out of England / Britain / the UK. We'll never know. Now Denmark, Belgium, other countries have constitutional monarchies but they live comparatively simply. If the Windsors would return all that cash and turn over the title of all the properties they live in to their nation (a lot of it is their PERSONAL property), they could continue to live glamorously and do good for their citizens, without TAKING so much. QE II is semi-notorious though, for quite carefully putting as much wealth as she can in her and her family's personal name and not to her country, whenever possible. Any gifts to American Presidents belong to the United States, with very minor exceptions such as puppies. Rereading all that, I want to end on a more upbeat note. At that time England wasn't just a nation, it was somehow a nation / village. The English people were celebrating the marriage of, almost, the girl down the street and around the corner, someone they knew. Another villager.

Elizabeth is uneducated and her greed along with her envy of never being outshone by her only sibling is difficult to watch. A cruel and cold woman. This “queen” lived for almost a millennia yet never gave a live question and answer interview to a true independent journalist, everything was prearranged and now I can see why.
@fusspot574 ай бұрын
Oh do pipe down. You do understand the principles of the Line of Succession? Maybe not. The Queen understood the problems that her sister had and tried to help even though some of Princess Margaret's behaviors and actions made this awkward. In those days you didn't interview British Royalty as if it was the Ed Sullivan show. However in the 70's the Queen did allow, for thefirst time, a documentary to be made on her day-to-day life including rest and relaxation. There have been many documentaries since. Your post is unpleasant and somewhat ignorant. Are you one of those who holds up a placard saying "Not my King" on State occasions?

Just had to say thanks for a wonderful compilation. As Tengnag (below) said four seasons ago: "It's like watching 10 episodes of The Crown in 36 minutes." (Just gave him a 500th "thumbs up"). I came to be reminded about the "Deadly Smog" (ff to the 16:23 mark). My wife and I are among the last couples in the western hemisphere NOT watching 'The Crown' . . . until re-joining Netflix this week. I'd been silently waiting to hear someone -- perhaps my favorite actress in the series, Eileen Atkins as Queen Mary - say something profound about how to be a good monarch. The moment came today - "Episode 4, Season 1 - 'Act of God'” - as severe fog blankets London for days, creating a health crisis that would kill thousands. Queen Mary is alone with her granddaughter - after Prime Minister Churchill's prediction that the crisis would soon end (“It's a fog. It will lift”). The prediction comes true at the exact moment when he is to meet with the young queen - about his “inaction” and the demands by political enemies that he be replaced. Queen Mary looks at the expression on Queen Elizabeth's face and says . . . “What, dear girl?” Elizabeth: Well, what if the fog hadn't lifted? And the government had continued to flounder -- and Churchill had continued to cling to power? [pause] It doesn't feel right, as head-of-state, to do nothing. MARY: It is EXACTLY right. ELIZABETH: Is it? But surely to do nothing, is to do no job at all. MARY: To do nothing IS the hardest job of all. And it will take every ounce of energy that you have. To be impartial is not natural -- it is not human. People will always want you to agree, or smile, or frown. And the minute you do - you will have declared a position. And that is the ONE THING as sovereign that you are not entitled to do. The less you do, or say, or agree, or smile . . . ELIZABETH: [interrupts] “.... or think? or feel, or breath, or exist? …. MARY: The better! ELIZABETH: [after long pause] Well that's fine for the sovereign. But where does that leave ME? ---- Wikipedia note on Eileen Atkins - "born in a Salvation Army hostel in London" she will, God willing turn 87 this June (2021). She been working in theater, film and TV “consistently since 1953 (the year of The Coronation itself) and so now she played someone her own current age, as "Queen Grandmother Mary." "Dame Eileen June Atkins, DBE -- English actress and occasional screenwriter, in 2008, she won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress and the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for 'Cranford.'"

The level of oration regardless of ones political camp is so much better than the crass contemptuous parlance of todays elected officials( I’m in Montreal Quebec Canada) and grew up with a grandmother from Manchester who called England ‘The Mother Country’ lol. But when you hear Churchill speak it’s almost poetic. His diction his humour and sly sarcasm is a treat to the ears. I watched the first televised debate between Kennedy and Nixon (on you tube. I was born in 1961)and even there the debating and speaking was well above anything you hear today (even though I didn’t agree with Nixon he was an excellent speaker though JFK blew him away on the television because he looked better. People listening on Radio apparently thought Nixon did better.)

She was constantly thrown in bad positions and forced to then think not of what was right or just to do but rather to think of the horrid rules of the State the Position and the Crown! It actually came all about the greed of men and trying to take over. And as for poor princess Margerate her life just got derailed in the process. Im soo thankful l live in America... I would never wish to live under a ruler based on those whose history came into power by killing and claiming countries and then ripping all the land of it natural resources.
