Someone, in their right mind, thought it would be a good idea to let Antonio Brown to own a football team. If you thought he was an issue as a player? You ain't seen nothing yet.

It’s not really that complicated to get into that position, especially if you have money to lose. Some of the leagues are reasonable buy ins and if you have an arena that is down, you too could run a football team into the ground. Hell, if you don’t mind playing outdoors, there are leagues of mediocre talents willing to destroy their bodies for like 50 bucks a game. Shit, you want to suit up? Go for it!

He was likely always the man he is, with his same character profile and mental health challenges he has today. He just always had people profiting him who worked hard to keep the necessary structure around him to keep him productive. College and NFL teams go to great lengths to constructive incentives (positive and negative), protective protocols, support systems, etc to keep players as accountable and healthy and safe as possible, …because a lot of them don’t arrive to the big money bright lights with the ability to sustain a high-pressure professional life (including college) without crashing it or fading away. AB just got rich enough to feel empowered disengage from (what he wasn’t looking at as) a world that included a lot of mechanisms to save him (and others with their own unique needs) from himself, and… rapid implosion of his business life and global reputation. (but he didn’t change. he just exited a world of guardrails and made himself the person Running a business, with no accountability to keep him in line beyond a league’s ability to terminate his franchise status)

This is an important level of play for guys still trying to climb the ladder and AB's ownership is not indicative of the sport as a whole. The IFL is experiencing one of its best seasons since changing commissioners and while the NAL has been turbulent, to use a diplomatic term, it's had some of the strongest play in it's history this season. It’s just a symptom of how poorly our society understands mental health. Some people have zero words for mental health, and then some of those people are football fans who learned the word “CTE” at some point …so they see a football player behaving irrationally or even counterproductively, and they point their finger and yell “cTE!!” when that’s not at all remotely close to what’s going on (and even though they’d never jump to that conclusion for anyone else in the world behaving the same way)

Not gonna lie, I thought this would take at least a full calendar year before things crapped the bed due to AB. I was even counting the antics I knew would come up, but thought that outside of him taking a dump at midfield during a game, he had a season, maybe two of mismanagement before he moved on to greener pastures. Here’s the thing, he had the perfect setup. Team is successful. He has name recognition to add to that and all he needed to do was show up to games, shake hands, be friendly enough, sign some autographs and go home. How does he have no one standing around him going, hey man, let this thing go on it’s own, you don’t have to do anything, it’s free money.

I remember when the Empire was announced for the AFL. Had season tickets both those 2 years before the league went under. After the transition to the NAL, it didn't quite feel the same. And support was definitely down way more compared to when the team kicked off in the AFL, but at least the team was still respectable, and still winning. There wasn't a soul I talked to who thought AB buying the team was gonna work out in any positive outcome. The only thing that was shocking was how quick he managed to absolutely trash one of the few decent things going on around Albany. Hopefully there'll be another attempt at Arena Football in Albany in the future, with none of the AB (or anyone's) bs antics, but I feel it may be a bit till that happens.

So, I grew up around Albany and moved back in 2015, worked in Albany and throughout the area in both restaurants and law firms, regularly read the newspaper and talked about football with coworkers, and I forgot we had a team until his name came up. I remembered his dad and the Firebirds' success because "Touchdown" worked at my high school, but that was about it. I'm sure it's different for kids and fans with kids, but the Empire really started to get traction in conversation in the area - again, for me, but I'm not a hermit - after there was *positive* talk about a celebrity coming to take the team over. And there was a gross "let's get popcorn and watch him F this up" vibe to Brown's time in the media/comment section spotlight around here that felt voyeuristic and sad and more like people thought we lucked out with a summer TV schedule than a sports story. So for those and other reasons, as a non-neutral observer, it's felt like there was the story of what might happen with the team and *that* couldn't exist without the "what's AB gonna do in front of all these cameras" story, and everyone suffered for it - including, importantly, Antonio Brown, who at times seemed mostly excited to be doing something cool with his dad.
