Well done Fabi. With the greatest of respect to all the other US players he is their best at classical chess. He is just young enough to squeeze in a challenge for the World Championship before the Indian avalanche takes the crown!

I love how simple this game seemed. I play the Italian as white and love seeing examples of these kinds of middle games. Wild how all it took was one slow move from Hans, and then Fabi ripped open the center and went to town. I don't know if I have those nerves to stare down those connected center pawns, but he made it seem easy! Thanks, as always, for the great video explanations!

On one hand I feel sorry for Niemann. Chess is a cruel mistress and to go from advantageous to losing with one fairly innocuous-looking move must sting. On the other hand, he knew very well Fabi is setting up for g5. I wonder if perhaps Hans was just a little too satisfied with his position at that moment and underestimated what's coming.

Hans is the most dramatic chess player in the world, and this was a big clash. Like many young players he will learn to not underestimate his more experienced rivals. Here's hoping he can make the spurt up to 2750 and beyond.

Hans got a nice position from the opening but messed it with Bb5 instead of Rc3 instantly. Surprising to me, how he underestimated blacks kingsattack. Another of Daniel's excellent analyses. Thanks from Slovakia.

Great game and commentary! At 16:40 after ...Qxa3, they pointed out on the broadcast Black was actually threatening an immediate sac on g2, with mate to follow, necessitating Rc2 as you mentioned. Also fwiw in his postmortem Fabi said he thought Hans could still defend after ...f3, Rf2, but that e6 was simply losing for White, and he, Fabi, could have won in a number of ways at that point.

Bb5 was questionable but b3 was the real mistake. The top players are very good at realizing when they've misstepped, and will reevaluate rather than compounding the error.

I'm wondering what made Guioco Pianissimo so much popular on the highest level -- is there really any significant fresh idea behind? Why is that Spanish has always been thought superior to Italian and suddenly they are level at best?

The Berlin Defence became a popular staple following the Kramnik v Kasparov championship and proved a successful antidote to many of the previously popular attacking lines in the Spanish. Players wishing to play in that same style had to adapt to that, and ideally find lines that weren't so well studied that they were basically a draw at the top level, as well as lines that still allowed ample opportunity for a strategically rich game.
@infernal314
@infernal314 11 ай бұрын
@@Cyst11 Yes, Berlin is most likely the reason, although you can avoid it with d3 and I still believe that the bishop is better on b5 rather than c4. Admittedly, some top GMs might be of different opinion...
@PowerPlayChess
@PowerPlayChess 11 ай бұрын
I have discussed this previously on the channel. Many of the main lines of the Spanish are forcing and with fierce computing power these often burn out to a draw. Not just the Berlin, but the Marshall, for example. The Giuoco Piano has fewer forcing lines and move orders are so subtle and varied that one is more likely to get a proper fight. It has nothing to do with the objective merits of each opening. Of course, all this applies to the top players in the world. It’s a different story lower down the food chain :)

I already saw the analysis of the game. However Hans' reputation will never overcome the cheating scandal. Even if plays into his senior years that's what he will be known for. Guard your reputation.

Funny how it’s pretty clear now that Hans didn’t cheat against Magnus OTB in St Louis last year. Magnus’ response to losing to certain people seems to be to point the finger, as he just did in Qatar and as he did against Hans. Perhaps one day Hans will merely be the first in a long line of players that Magnus has accused of cheating after losing OTB, each accusation diminishing the impact of the one preceding it… 🤷🏻‍♂️🙏

@@mcronrnso? He cheated online and you act like it never happened. Many sports dropped heavily in prestige because of doping. Don't pretend that chess players are better than that. Especially Hans.
