I finished playing an OTB game in a Dallas tournament, and saw a small kid (maybe 12) sitting by himself analyzing his own game in silence. Figuring it would be nice to be social and help analyze with the kid, I ask him how his game went. Within 30 seconds I could tell that not only was I not the gracious benefactor offering to help this kid, but he was clearly a strong master with deep theory, good calculation skills, and a eye towards improvement. I got a free lesson from Andy Woodward that day, and I believe he'll make GM sooner rather than later!

White's h4 shows the danger in reflexively following computer recommendations. Computers are spectacular defenders, and as such, are able to uncover the only line where the King staggers around to safety somewhere. For humans, though, leaving huge holes in your position with your King stuck in the middle is a recipe for disaster. It didn't take long for Niemann's position to collapse.

Andy Woodward is already much stronger than his rating would suggest, which is usually the way with talented juniors, and I'd expect him to be 2600+ within the next 3 years or so and with the GM title under his belt. The rating disparity means very little in these circumstances and Niemann would have been aware that Woodward is a very dangerous opponent. It seems to me that Niemann reached the end of his preparation and simply chose the wrong plan with 19.b5 and 20.Qa4 and Woodward took his opportunity and didn't let it slip. An interesting game throughout.

This was a nice introduction to IM Woodward. I don't think I had ever heard of him, before this. I'm always happy to see another strong American player appear. Of course, at 13, I'll now wonder if he disappears when he becomes old enough for college like so many strong American players wisely do. Very calm play. Impressive. Thanks.

It's honestly disrespectful to his achievements. "See this is what he plays like without cheats" while he played as usual and this incredible 13yo pushed to victory against a pretty highly placed person on the world ranks. This kid played beautifully and doesn't deserved to have his victory robbed by "he must have turned off the cheats"

Another channel which did a breakdown of this said Andy's accuracy in the game was 97 or 98% and Niemann's was in the 90s also. It's not like Niemann just lost to someone because he's bad or something as I'm sure many of his detractors would like to say. The younger player did great. Edit: 12:00 And yeah, seems like Niemann had opportunities to simplify and go for a draw. This is actually one of the things that he's said about himself in past interviews that he needs to learn to go for a draw when needed instead of continuing to take chances that could lead to a loss.

Very interesting (and instructive) game. I looked the final standings up - Niemann finished 11th, actually ahead of Woodward (30th). According to the computer, Woodward played it almost flawlessly - lichess evalutes his accuracy as 97% (Niemann: 90%). The engine thinks White is actually kind of fine up until the quite natural 32. h5 (still only at minus 1.0 before that, which reflects being down a pawn), which tries to cash the h-pawn out, but vacates the g5 square for Black rook, and things go downhill from there. 39. Bc2 was the final mistake, because after 39 ... Qc3 the position is beyond salvation. Even with best play White has to at least give up the Bishop.

Very nice commentary but IMO probably more for the intermediate and higher level players. Although I consider myself in those groups, I wouldn't have minded some comments to benefit the more beginning players that would have covered more basic concepts like the decision by white to occupy the center beyond the comment about the c4-d3-e4 complex, necessity to stabilize and solidify before a wing attack (h4-h5) can be executed and that Black successfully exposed the white king by counterattacking in the middle. Of course the concrete tactics are all due to the talent of these specific players but beginners should be reminded continuously of the strategical concepts. As always, this channel chooses and provides excellent commentary on notable games.

I think a part of that is to do with psychology as well as other more solid choices for white - drawing or losing with black is seen as more palatable than doing the same with white. I went into my most recent otb game without fear (but still ample caution) against a stronger (junior) opponent with the black pieces (me) and was ready to take him on with the Sicilian. Alas, he played 1.d4 so I played for a Nimzo which transposed into a Ragozin and I won that game quite comfortably. Had I had the white pieces, the pressure might have been on me to not lose, and I certainly would have avoided a reverse Sicilian given the other choices available.

Have you ever met a genuine GM whose strength varies from one game to another in an instant? I don't think that a player necessarily plays at a lower level, but the choices that are made in any particular game may be related to the opponent. So, for instance I could believe that one might play more aggressively and expect to win against 13 year old Andy Woodward than against a Carlsen or Kramnik, both proven to play at global elite levels.

As a longtime fan of Aronian, let me tell you, there are some great GMs and even Super GMs that play inconsistently, sometimes even at games within the same tournament. When Aronian is playing well he doesn't pay attention to material and can beat anyone. When playing badly he will just make you scratch your head and wonder what on earth happened to him.
