Montreux Jazz Festival

Күн бұрын

The Crusaders were one of the pioneers of Jazz-Funk music in the seventies and have made a number of visits to Montreux over the years. This DVD focuses on their performance from 2003 when the band were touring in support of their album "Rural Renewal". Founder members Joe Sample and Wilton Felder were joined in the line-up by long standing friend Ray Parker Jr on guitar and by the inimitable Randy Crawford on vocals. They delivered a set that spanned their career from early days up to their latest album capped with a stunning nine minute plus performance of their classic "Street Life" and finished off with a fun rendition of Ray Parker Jr's "Ghostbusters".

I was at that concert and met Randy Crawford on the street in front of the Palace Hotel after it. My fiancee Anne told her I'm a huge fan of hers. She ran into her hotel room and brought me back her CD. She signed it "To Hannu with all my love. Randy Crawford". How kind can you get? 🎉❤

I was driving home from work one day and then it suddenly hit me… the difference between music from the 60’s 70’s 80’s and now. The music doesn’t give joy or life. It doesn’t have joy or pep or original attitude. At least not much. Truly the golden era of music was over long ago

There is a sector of this millennial generation who believe that, with an ounce of talent and a huge amount of ego, they can make it in the music business. They even believe that they have a God given right to do so. Take a long hard look at those guys in the band, kids, because they have zero ego, huge amounts of talent and have spent years working hard developing their talent. Look and learn, kids, because nobody is going to hand you success on a plate just because you feel you deserve it.

Not sure it is just "a sector" or segment. With a comment like yours, I'm surprised you haven't absorbed some verbal blows by now.....from one of the know-it-all musician or celebrity wannabe's. I do all the time, when I try to illustrate some striking musical comparisons between the generations.....lol. New generation, political indoctrination, cancel culture, some other factors..... proliferation of urban culture and urban "values" (that's being generous) or thug music has degraded some ethno-music segments which was represented so well here with Randi, Joe and the Crusaders. This whole musical art form is on life support also because of the huge buyout and takeover of the FM smooth jazz radio broadcasters 15 years ago or so and conversion into other broadcasting formats.....have to listen to Sirius XM Watercolors. Not sure how these artists can make a commercial go of it these days. No where to play, no stations on which to hear their music, concerts out the window, festivals few and far between, and all the jazz greats like Joe Sample and others are all deceased. Just terribly depressing gang....terribly depressing.....have to go back and listen to the classic material and artists on Y-T I guess.

Agree 100%. This 'entitled' culture starts at school age. No one is allowed to fail an exam because that just might hurt their feelings. So everyone gets a certificate which makes the exam meaningless to potential employers. But no-one explains this to the kids. And when they leave the protection of the school they do so with a belief that their certificate will get them a job because they are 'entitled' to it. And that's when they come up against the real world.

I saw them twice at The Newport, RI Jazz festivals in the late 70's. Their performances were beyond words. Truly great and innovative musicians. RIP Joe Sample and Wilton Felder. I never realized that Joe did a lot of keyboard work with Steely Dan in the day. That's his great solo you hear on the song "Black Cow" from Aja.

Greg I'm with you. I know a bit about some street life. The crackheads version of street life. I know about different parts of the street life and The Nightlife overall. And it's a blessing to not be that anymore. It's a blessing to be the one that walks in the night telling folks that there is hope in Jesus Christ to come out of what you are in.

Just sheer class! I used to play drums in a function band and we did this. It's really hard to play as there's so much space. You're out on your own as a drummer. If you aren't solid and funky it all falls apart. This is just brilliant to see and hear.
