There’s a guy here in my city that for the last 30 years has been riding his bike all over town dressed only in trunks with his body covered in oil. He rarely talks to other people and everybody kinda collectively agreed not to bother him. He’s known as Oilman and everybody here in Curitiba, Brazil knows who he is and cherishes him as basically the top folklore figure of the city. He’s kind of a Cryptid I guess. Edit 1: as a brazilian I frickin love the Mapinguari and I love even more how you admire our weird folklore!

Quick clarification on the dodo: the myth that it was eaten to extinction is just that. While the sailors that showed up on the island did eat some of them, they were described as being gamy and unpleasant, so they weren't actually eaten all that often. Instead, the sailors fished off the shores of the island for most of their food. The reason the dodo went extinct is not because it was "too dumb and slow" to get away from some dudes with clubs, but because the sailors ships had rats stowed away on them, which came onto the island with them. Dodos were a flightless bird, so they made their nests at ground level and since they had no natural predators, they had no need to protect/hide their nests. The rats that infested the island thus made short work of all the dodo nests, pillaging and consuming all their eggs. The dodos died out in a single generation, likely _after_ the sailors had already left (without having eaten them all) because every last one of their nests were destroyed by rats. It's _still_ the fault of the sailors for allowing the rats to get onto the island in the first place, but for once, it wasn't direct human activity that killed off a species. People didn't kill them; rats did.

Your way of telling histories with homour and the obvious knowelegde you have because of the incredible resource that you make, really motivates me a lot, and it makes me wanna do a good job when im doing something. And also, you made me wanna read again, a hobbie that i lose over the years but now you encourage to retain it. So thanks to all of that, i dont think that any other channel will ever made me feel this way. (sorry for the probably horrific english, i promise you im doing my best).

As you have probably guessed English is not my first language but when I discovered your channel about a week ago I wish it was my first language so I could enjoy your channel even more. (I know it sounds weird but I can't find a different way to to say it). The way you tell different histories with humor and the obvious amount of knowledge you have makes you an incredible resource. It really motivates me alot and makes wanna do my best when I do something. And also you made me want to read again, A Hobbie I have lost over the years, but you have encouraged me to take up again. So thanks for all of that, I don't think any other channel has ever made me feel like this one has." I hope it helps a bit in your english journey. Peace my friend.

The best feature of the squonk is that due to the marshlands it resides in, it developed webbed feet. But only on its left side. So if one happened to stray too far out into the water, it would swim in a circle until it drowned. This is the leading cause of death for squonks.

‘Previous studies by Merchant showed that alligators have an unusually strong immune system that is very different from that of humans. Unlike people, alligators can fight microorganisms such as fungi, viruses, and bacteria without having prior exposure to them.’ This explains why alligators can get their legs or even faces completely ripped off by other alligators and casually heal and go on with their lives. So they’d more than likely be able to survive sewers

Hi Wendigo, brazilian here. Big fan of your channel. I doubt I am the first one to point out but you ended up putting together two myths in the Mapinguari: the creature itself only is a giant ape/sloth thing with a mouth on its belly. The backwards feet comes from the Curupira, which is sort of a Indigenous Brazilian elf (in a very broad sense): which is a creature with fire instead of their hair and it is a protector of the jungle and it's animals. The backwards feet is to trick hunters. The curupira is a much broadly known myth in Brazil like the Saci and the Headless Mule, so it's nice to see someone talking about the Mapinguari! Love your channel, especially the iceberg stuff.

To be fair, I'm from a urban area (São Paulo), far away from the amazon forest. It's always a surprise. For example, when you told that story about Henry Ford coming here in the 30s (if I'm not mistaken?) and building an american city in the middle of nowhere in the forest, I didn't know about that and I was shocked. Anyway, another great video!

Secondly I have an iceberg video suggestion, Ready or Not, idk if that game is your kinda vibe, but I think you’d make an amazing video on it and it might even bring more viewership to the channel. Marine Biologist here yet again Many of my profs have talked about how we need to give more credit to people who live in an area. Meetings about the environment and what it means for native people used to just be full of scientists with one native rep but nowadays we try to flip that ratio. We've also had speakers who tell us how fishermen are great at noticing climate change effects (even if they are global warming deniers) cause you can get them talking about how fish aren't the same size they were 20 years ago and whatnot. So giving more credit to the people wendigoon mentioned throughout the video is good for both science and crytid

Having read your comments, I did some digging on Vodyanoy and what I found is actually quite curious. It seems to be that these two, even though they might have the same origin, are actually quite different in their nature. I recommend the English wiki page, as it gives a general overview of their differences and similarities, but to be completely honest, they give me vibes of 2 quite different cryptids.

15:40 I have a special place in my heart for the Squonk. One of my mother's favourite bands is Genesis, so I listened to a lot of their music as a little baby. They have a song called Squonk, and the whole piece is a story about a hunter luring a squonk in by pretending to be a friend, only for the hunter to find a pool of tears in a sack when he got back home. It's an extremely somber song with a funky bassline that I still love to this day, and for that alone, Squonk is S tier for me.

As a brazilian, first I have to say, I absolutely love your content! You're so captivating and funny, love from Brazil! 💛💚🤍💙And now I gotta comment about Mapinguari, honestly, I've never heard of it, but I belive it's because it has evolved to the folklore known here as Curupira. It's important to note that most of the folklore legends here are originated from native groups and usually have a lot to do with nature. The Curupira is usually described as a young boy with a vibrant, pulled up red hair (more commonly said to have actual fire for hair) with big teeth and backwards feet, holding a large stick or a makeshift spear. He's not only a protector of the forest, but mainly watches over the weak, protecting baby animals from hunters and ill intentioned people. He truly acts like a chaotic child who loves to cause mischief and has a carefree, funny and kind personality, but absolutely loses it to people preying on the forest and weak animals, turning feral with the fire in their hair matching their fury and planning traps to get to the hunters and tricking them with his backwards feet. Anyways, thank you so much for the video! I've been acompannying your channel for a long while now and it warms my heart you enjoy the crazy brazilian cryptid/folklore we have (my personal favorite is the Mula sem Cabeça/Headless Mule)! You know what would be a fascinating video that seemingly nobody is touching on, at least in depth? The batshit crazy "Empress". One of the only people on earth who can crack the DRM software Denuvo. A literal cult leader, and genuinely terrible person. It is WILD. Not only is she's basically single handedly keeping videogame piracy alive, she also happens to be one of the unhinged people I've ever read about. Her skills at cracking games, position in the scene, and her unprecedented level of narcissism make for an absolute spectacle.

Mr. Goon, I am from Florida and when I was a child, my father would tell a story of a bi-pedal alligator type creature that would come up from the swamps. It would prey on folks who were camping near the water and would make a haunting clicking noise while stalking its victims. I’ve tried researching this tale to see if I could find its origin but haven’t been able to find anything. I was wondering if you’d come across anything like this. Thanks!

Seeing the mboi yagua statue immediately made me think of the Columbia River sand squink, one of the fearsome critters. It's described as a coyote with bobcat spots, rabbit ears, and a squirrel tail that could create sparks by touching its tail to the tips of its ears, which it used to lead travelers astray. It also lived along river banks and laid eggs of bakelite Granted, this description doesn't sound all that similar. However, this statue looks a LOT like an old drawing of the squink laying down near the river, having a similar silhouette. And even thinking about it, you could see how they could possibly be describing the same animal. The barbs on the tail look kinda like rabbit ears with a pointed snout. Mammals don't really lay eggs, but snakes do which could be described as almost like a mishappen plastic compared to bird eggs. Snakes can also have spots not dissimilar to a feline. And apparently there's the connection to coyotes if it's said to bark. While the sparks can't be completely explained, being bitten by one would certainly hurt at least as much as being shocked, if not more. The Columbia River runs through northwestern US and up through Canada, but I could still see this possibly being a legend which morphed as it moved up from south America

If I may add on to a couple of things mentioned: -The water thing with kappas is often tied in with them possibly becoming servants. The idea is, if you bow and they bow back lose that water, you can refill the hole with water and the kappa will feel they owe you their servitude for showing them mercy. -The big serpents mentioned from the Philippines are pretty scary, if straightforward, but if you ever just want some fun reading of wild myths, trust me that Filipino mythology has some wild stuff, too. Edit: I've been made aware that one video mentions aswang, I've yet to see it

Mainlining this cryptid lore Fun Dodo facts: They were so easy to kill and so bad to taste that they caused local tortoises to be hunted near extinction. There was also a tree that’s seeds couldn’t germinate without being passed through a Dodo. 3 species threatened or made extinct just because they never had a natural predator.

Just finished the 3rd installment and while on the Hodag it crossed my mind that yourself or someone else with this knowledge should put these creatures into a kids cartoon series. Maybe a character like “Benny Bigfoot” or another tier 1 cryptid could explore the world in search of other lesser known cryptids. You could include some friends like the Mothman or Thunderbird to help Benny get from place to place. With over 350 creatures compiled here, there’s plenty of material on the table.

I think giant catfish is a great cryptid because it makes Lakes (a place often seen as recreational with little danger to humans) suddenly a scary place to be. As someone who grew up with a lakehouse thinking about big ass catfish spooked me away from diving too deep.
