I thought the same thing. Why does she imprison the villains like discord,King Sombra, and Nightmare Moon, when she has the power to just destroy them in the first place. The only acception was Nightmare Moon because if she did destroy her, Luna would have been destroyed too. But I have to admit, I love it when Villains return cause it shows that they have a high threat level. I hope they do a final battle where it's hoof to hoof cause something happens like the elements get destroyed. Nice Vid

About Celestia and Luna absent: My friend had idea that they didn't came with Mane 6 because so far every major villain they have encountered have turn to shit (Luna to Moon, Discord got free, Sombra wasn't destroyed and additionaly Crystal Empire vanished partly because of them). Probably they didn't wanted to screw things up, again.

I believe the writers made King Sombra's part limited on purpose. We tend to fear the unknown, so for a villain that is practically the living embodiment of fear, the less that is known about him the better the effect.

I agree. I felt that I barely got to know King Sombra as a villain besides knowing the backstory at the beginning of the premiere. He definately should've had more screentime.

y'know, I kinda think Somber will be a recurring baddie (that horn seemed perfectly fine) he's kind of a Lich; staying alive (or undead) by his sheer dark magical powers, to the point of reforming when close to a source of great magical power (some stories say that the only way to truly kill a lich is to destroy the magical item that binds them). And let's face it, he's the first 'death' of the show. that being said, he needed a lot more screen time and impact. . .

I am glad that you didn`t trash this episoe like some others did. Great job. I agree that it was cool how Spike got to be a hero. I also like how Twilight face the no win scenario. Really Wrath of Khan like. I think that is part of the reason Celestia imposed limitations. After the season 3 finale this makes even more sense and is more significant.

Well, perhaps celestia chose to choose twilight to do this on her own without the elements so that by completing the task, she would have proven to be worthy and talented enough to progress with her magic studies, as celestia might be secretly preparing her for something much bigger in the future (explaining why this task was a "test"). Also, maybe they banished sambre before discord (and luna), and thus learnt from their mistakes later but forgot about sambre. Still a great episode overall :)

I agree. Especially as there has been no specific training to lead to the big responsibility that comes with the test. I feel that it should of been Celestia wanting to go take care of the situation herself , but then Twilight insists on taking her place when she realizes that something could happen to her during it. That would of been more believable.

They hint in a trailer for season 3 that Twilights true destiny shall be revealed. Celestia probably has bigger plans for Twilight and this was some sort of test.

I think another good thing would have been if all of the main 6 had to face their greatest fear, much in the way discord made them their opposites it would have been good for them to battle a phantom sombre who would have been disguised in their own nightmare Pinkie facing a world with no fun? Rarity in a world of dullness and grey? Fluttershy no longer being able to understand her animals? AJ Having no family and being stuck in a city? RD being dumped & alone? Sounds like character development!

As for seasons being short, look at the newest season of the venture brothers, a mere 8 episodes. So yes, lots of shows get cutbacks in episodes.

No I don't unfortunately. I was originally planning on it if the viewers liked it, and there was no comment about it, and I didn't want to jump to conclusion if people liked it or no. Even worse, I lost the file due to having computer issues, and thus wiping the drive, unable to save the mp3 in the process. However, I do have a Tumblr post where I have a WIP of if you can hear. No, they did not use the elements of harmony to defeat King Sombra. It was the crystal heart - which was powered by the citizen's love and happiness or something like that.

king Sombra will return in season finale in the scene where he get`s blown up you can see his horn flying away and we already know he can regenerate from his horn

Well done, This is a WAY better review than paleo's I'm sorry but I felt Paleo Was biased with his rating and tended to stray toward constant nit-picking whereas you looked at both the positive and the negative. Overall The villain was dull, but this episode is better than what people give it credit for IMO

i agree with everything you say there was room for inprovement but i was thinking it is episode 1-2 so i fort maybe there just warming us up for the further because in episode 3 thats now out there was over more then anouth pinkies now thats a suprise

The whole "test" angle was really flimsy, forced, and stupid. Celestia and Luna didn't get involved because they apparently wanted to make sure Twilight was ready for something. That I can pretty much understand, for the most part, but why is Twilight, and even SPIKE, so concerned about passing this test that it it literally keeps them from rescuing an entire population?! Oh, but wait, apparently that's what Celestia WANTED Twilight to do, ignore the test for the greater good... Bah. >:|

I've always wondered something. Why does the Crystal Empire have such a name? It's not an empire by any means. At most, it's a big city or town. Why not something like "Crystal City" or something?
