There are many things that aren’t reviewable which should be. You can’t challenge a foul ball 🤷‍♂️

I want to think that there's some Baseball Guru with all these esoteric explanations----but my only guess is they just decided "we need to limit reviewable plays". Perhaps infield line-drives tend to be uncontroversial and called correctly----and therefore, it was left off a list they wanted to keep small. Baseball doesn't want games to get longer, and they had to draw the line somewhere? I guess? So is the answer "Pace of Play"? Idk, man. Maybe we're just in hell, lol.

Joe Essig can’t review it because it’s an infield catch. Not an outfield catch.

The best reasoning I can think of for not reviewing this play is the infielder played the ball as if it was caught, because that's what the ump had signaled. He likely would have proceeded differently if it had been ruled a trap (in this case thrown home I assume) and it's not really fair to punish him for reacting to how the ump called the line drive. Arguably more unfair than getting a catch/trap call wrong.

@SimpleManGuitars1973
@SimpleManGuitars1973 4 жыл бұрын
@@matt4122 In that specific scenario I think it is not reviewable. I think it is only considered reviewable when they try to determine guys scooping it up or trapping it in the outfield or something. I'm a Cubs fan and honestly this game was a disaster anyway but I'd still be in favor of making it reviewable to keep it from costing a team something major down the road though.
@frankie467
@frankie467 4 жыл бұрын
The Reds announcers went into great detail explaining that the play was not reviewable. One announcer pretty much hinted he would be calling someone to inquire further about it. In this game it didn’t make much of a difference, but say the game had been tied or a one run game it would have potentially altered the outcome. All plays should be reviewable IMHO. It’s more important to get the call right.

The problem here is that because it was called out on the fly, there is no telling whether it would have been a single out or a double play. Given how he threw it to first where the batter was already safe, we don't know what could have happened to the runner already on first going to second. Also, had the ump not called it an out, the third basemen may have made an attempt to throw out the runner going home. It's just a weird situation all around, and though it shouldn't have been called an out, I don't know what they could have ruled the play as instead.

Jesus Lopez well just in case you weren’t aware, when a word or phrase (typically a word) is misused enough it’s actually agreed among everyone that the misinterpreted use of the word/phrase becomes the new definition/meaning. America being the perfect example, another one being the word ‘decimate’- clearly breaking the word down it would mean 1/10th of something being destroyed but people have so commonly misused it that it changed the meaning to “completely obliterating someone/something”

Yea it’s getting out of hand. All the pitchers have to do is hit the spot where the catcher is setting up and Ump will call it a strike even if it doesn’t touch the black part of the play. There will be pitches where the ball crosses the axis of the strike zone and the ump won’t call it a strike simply because the catcher didn’t set up their pre pitch. It’s an embarrassment and they should all be fired and do the politicians next.

Maybe it's not reviewable cause they haven't figured out what to do when they overturn those calls? Since that initial call affects the rest of the play for both runners and fielders. Had the "catch" been the last out, how do you overturn that? Free single and run scores? Third baseman would have made another out so inning still over? If there had been one out and he "caught" it and stepped on third to end the inning, do you say he would've thrown to first for the double play or give a free single?

@@xmbdesign7421 there's no way he would have gotten either of those runners. He may have gotten two at first because he probably would've gotten to the bag and thrown it quicker because of urgency, but after he steps on three the only other play is at first and it would have been close.

@brandonfrancey5592
@brandonfrancey5592 4 жыл бұрын
The problem with that is stopping the game after every single close play. It's bad enough staring at a manager standing on the top step who is waiting for a guy on the phone waiting for the review guy to say challenge it or not every time something happens.
@drizzle452
@drizzle452 4 жыл бұрын
I heard that too. I guess the problem is what to do with the runners if it’s reversed, because you can’t assume where Bryant is going with the ball if it’s ruled in play.
@grbmajor6645
@grbmajor6645 4 жыл бұрын
@@drizzle452 It wouldn't be "reversed". It would have just been ruled a ground ball, force out at third, and putout at first, and runner from third scores. It's ridiculous that this is a non review play.
@mae2759
@mae2759 4 жыл бұрын
@@grbmajor6645 It's not that simple. The actions of F5 were based on the instantaneous out call by the umpire. So he might have thrown home or he might have thrown somewhere else if it was ruled no catch. Plus how do we have a putout at first when the batter is already standing past first base? So if we go with R2 is out for F5 stepping on third, what do we do with R3 scoring? Do we send him back? F5 assumed he was out when he stepped on third, so he didn't throw home.
