That rail line was shut down and paved over in 1963, it wasn't profitable and they were operating at a loss. Once you get to Heathfield, I recommend turning East and visiting the pretty little village of Rushlake Green. (allegedly the most isolated settlement in East Sussex) Also, Hellingly Country Park is well worth a visit, very pretty little place (off Goldring Avenue) Once I come back from Heathfield, I like to pump my tyres up hard and see how far I can coast down the hill until I have to pedal again - you can make it past Horam if you have a tailwind!

What a splendid idea. Will try that next time I repeat this trail.

Actually it closed for passengers in '65 but continued as a freight line until '68 which is when Hailsham was shut. I remember when that railway was open. I feel sure it wouldn't be running at a loss now. The last time I visited the line was in '76. The tracks and ballast had been removed. You could walk from Hailsham right up beyond Heathfield and not meet a soul. How peaceful it was!!!
