One time these two guys tried selling my grandma some Bible books and she was very very religious so she bought them and gave one to me(I've only read the child Bible like the ones with pictures and stuff). We started reading it together and my grandma who has read the Bible loads of times snatched mine and burned both of them immediately. I was shocked and when I asked her why she did that she said "this is not the Bible this is something evil" and I was confused by that but few years later I asked her again about it and she said that the people were cult members and the Bible they sold us was written by them and they wrote stuff in it like "show your devotion to God by killing your kids" and other evil stuff like that. The cult was later shut down and the members were arrested but it scares me to this day.

I think the problem arises, much like we see here with Dobrik, when it evolves from a community to a fundamentalist group that reveres charismatic leaders or certain cherry picked teachings over the well-being of themselves and those around them. More ‘liberal’ (not the American political dirty word, but the literal meaning of being willing to accept the beliefs and practices of others) churches and faith groups do genuinely have the power to pick up lonely or disenfranchised people and raise them into open-mindedness and compassion, but when you’re dealing with those types of vulnerable people, it’s very easy to spiral into perverting those teachings of compassion and open-mindedness into radical ideas and reclusiveness.

When you mentioned Scientology and being across the hospital, I got chills. I recently had a surgery in that hospital that I dreaded because of that “church.” When I was younger, I had been attending summer school and one bus stop was at the corner where Scientologists would hang. I was only 15, and they approached me to take a “Free personality test.” Thinking it was on the spot, and trying to be a nice person, I agreed. However, they ended up taking me to the building, with an extra person that suddenly joined us. I honestly don’t know how long I’d been in there, but I felt uncomfortable. The “personality test” took over an hour or so to complete, and they kept purposely prolonging my stay there. When I told them I had to get home to my mom, they said she could come pick me up and she could join the “church” as well. They told me I just had to watch a movie. I guess it was supposed to mesmerize me, but I just got scared. Sitting in the small room they had me in, one part on the wall, behind me, was glass. They were watching me the entire time. I then texted my mom to tell her what was going on, as she had always warned me of them. She told me to get out and not let them hold me back. That’s when I finally had the courage to get out and even then they kept trying to get me to stay. When I was finally about to leave the building, two people were watching me the whole way out. Please be careful out there P.S. real quick side story. I recently stopped working at Old Navy, and I remember I had to do a training course for work. In one of the videos they were talking about discrimination and not tolerating it. When they discussed “accepting all, and every, religion” they ended up showing the SCIENTOLOGY BUILDING and I literally had to go back to make sure they were not messing with me. Now, I don’t know if they’re affiliated with the ‘church’, or they’re too naïve to do their own research about Scientology, but it definitely sent up red flags. Why? Because Scientology only works with Scientology. They do not provide Scientologists work, or any place for that matter, where there are people who aren’t Scientologists. Now I wasn’t ever asked about Scientology at my work which is why I’m not sure if they are affiliated with them, but it was still pretty creepy to see when I know the works of Scientology.

To be honest, though, it was true for me. A few years ago, my younger sister tried to tell me how funny & entertaining he was. She showed me his IG, and I just felt so creeped out by the fact that every single photo was of him fake smiling. Something was off, and checking out his channel did it for me. There was SO MUCH obnoxious, frat boy energy that I couldn’t get through a 4 minute video. The fake laughing alone was too much, not to mention the sexualizing of the female friends, grown men making immature sexual jokes, the fact that there was a middle aged man with a bunch of young people - so many red flags. It was weird to me that kids watched him and his friends. Granted, I was about 25yo at the time, so I was likely older than his targeted age demographic.

my mom got stuck in a cult in california in the 90s. she moved there bc she wanted to be an actress and ended up being approached by someone w a job offer of selling thesaurus’s door to door. This “company” offered free rooms and the “leader” was apparently someone in hollywood who could get them famous, but none of the members on my moms level got to know who it was. They would also go to parties in hollywood which in my opinion was their way of trying to “prove” to the members that the leader really is this powerful man who could make their dreams come through. They would get paid but only enough to cover food, never enough to be able to easily escape. The men and women were also kept seperate unless they were all doing something as a group. She met a man there and they ended up escaping together and he got her pregnant, they then took buses to get all the way back to massachusetts where we’re from. He ended up leaving b4 my sister was born and taking all my moms money and now we have no idea where he is. Thought I’d add this to show that cults come in many forms and its not always about a religion.

I think Natalie is a really interesting person in this situation. She was David’s childhood friend before becoming his employee (assistant). He love-bombs her constantly with massively expensive things, and in return she provides clickbait and a wholesome/trustworthy image for the group with her ‘girl next door’ thing. There’s even a running joke with the men about how badly they all want to sleep with her, but can’t because she “belongs” to David (she gets referred to as the “mom” of the group where David is the “dad”). I am a strong, obstinate, passionate and incredibly (sometimes annoyingly so) independent person. Yet I became trapped in an abusive relationship for several years. Unfortunately, ‘cancel culture’ doesn’t really exist when a majority of your audience are children. Children don’t have the critical thinking skills to understand this video or see David for who he is or what he’s doing. The Paul brothers have mastered manipulating and marketing to their child audience and so has David. It’s very hard for people like David to leave the public eye of fame. Great video by the way! I minored in religious studies and wrote papers about cults and this stuff in college and it’s nice to see someone doing it in this format! I loved the video, as a french man who speaks a lil english I understood everything you was saying. I learned a lot and I thank you for that! The video actually opened my eyes on a certain MLM Group who IS a cult and I never understood why I was agreeing to go with them even when my subconscious told me that it was up to no good. They catch you at a vulnerable time or state in your life so you follow and after 1 month I understood that I didn't want to be part of that. The month felt like a week, brainwashed everyday having big kind of TED talk meetings with everyone cheering the gurus so you naturally follow and it starts to affect your perception because you cheer everyday to "follow" you start to believe it! I told my family "you'll see it's a great opportunity for me".. I was neglecting them, when a higher up would call me i'd have this joy and answer ASAP.. When my family called, the higher ups started to tell me that they want to stop you from being great and to not pick up the phone! That's when my mind flipped back to normal because I'm a really family oriented person, so I got angry slapped the man and left.. They kept calling me... Threatening me... Sending people to my city... When I confronted those people with like half of my neighborhood (the projects) they eventually stopped stalking me. SCARY!!! So people listen to what your loved ones have to say because they want what's best for you (99% of the time)

One part I wanted to add is how David treats women in his vlog and his business. Anybody else thought it was strange how most of his employees are women?( 1 publicist & 3 assistants) 1 of which lived with him for years(Natalie). There has been so many occasions where they all said David treats them very badly. There’s a long running joke in the vlogs of how possessive David is about Natalie. About how he almost never lets her go on vacation or leave LA to see her family. Classic abuser behaviour. When I listened to his podcast I was upset at the amount of time he gaslights them. Meghan (his publicist) would bring up an issue with him yelling at her and making her cry and he would cut her off and say she was dramatic and exaggerating.

I just wanted to add that no matter how good a person has been to you, you have the right to address any situation in which their actions were unkind or disrespectful. Although you may not define someone as unkind or disrespectful as a whole, their action still was. And if they don't recognize the action as being unkind/disrespectful, that's a red flag that this action may happen again. I don't know this situation beyond what's in these comments, but my main point is that no matter how kind a person is, it does not give them a pass to be unkind/disrespectful sometimes. I get that people aren't perfect, but talking about why someone hurt you isn't demanding perfection. It can be a conversation like "hey, I know you were under a lot of stress lately or were just joking, but when you do "x," it made me feel like "y". In future, can you "z" instead?" And if the behavior does not change, you may want to evaluate your relationship with that person and really think about if it's an abusive relationship

Toxic family members said that a lot and sometimes even my grandparents whom I love deeply. i feel for everyone who is made “the butt of the joke” in their social circles. this role tends to fall on one or two members of friend groups who become the scapegoats. because everything is a “joke,” it’s taboo to speak up and say you don’t want to be treated that way. but over time it gets to a point where nobody respects you or takes you seriously. and it’s a strange position to be in because on one hand if you’re the “class clown” type you feel very loved because people want to be around you, but on the other hand it never feels like you’re seen as a full person, for who you really are. i’ve been in that position before and it felt like if i wanted to talk about my hopes and dreams, or if i opened up about struggling, it would be turned into a joke even if it was an earnest or serious matter. now, when i see that a person often becomes the butt of the joke, i go out of my way to make sure that when i interact with them i ask them how they are and try to be a good listener without having to turn everything into a joke. having a normal one-on-one conversation can be a rarity for some folks, but it’s so important and humanizing for all of us. i think this concept also applies to people who are seen in any limiting role, like “the happy friend,” “the strong friend,” “the complainer,” or “the one who has it all together.”

For a time in high school my best friend since childhood started up with a mean sense of humor (possibly influenced by That 70s Show, which she had recently started watching) calling me names like "sl*t" and so forth. Even years later, I feel like a big baby for admitting it really hurt my feelings. Fortunately, she was a friend since childhood, so when I did finally talk to her about it "You're supposed to be my friend, but you keep calling me these mean things that my bullies call me. It really hurts my feelings." She apologized and stopped. But not everyone feels able to open up, and those who do aren't always so lucky to be heard. It's very sad. Part of me does blame the influence of shows like That 70s Show, HIMYM, Friends, etc where these groups of friends treat eachother like crap and it's laughed off like it's no big deal. Maybe I am a big baby for seeing these groups go out of their way to "burn" their so-called friends and I can't help but think "With friends like that, who needs enemies?" I watched his videos every now and then when they popped up on my recommended or I was trying to kill time. Never really was a fan of the blog squad to begin with, but what turned me off completely was one video where he accidentally sliced his hand open smashing a glass bottle. The first thing they were all worried about was whether they had filmed it or not. It was disturbing that they cared more about content than their own well-being.

There is just something about this kid that gave me rotten apple vibes. His way of expressing is just like saying words without meaning, body language, that of a manipulator. Regardless of what people think about Trisha and some of the other members of the vlog squad, how he treated them was unacceptable. Yet at the same time, him supporting his predetor friend and hanging out with a literal boomer by making content targetted towards children is just as bad. Conclusion: there is no good side to David.

Not to deffend him, I don't like him at all anymore, but while Jeff can be mad at him and he chose not to cause it doesn't help anybody, he is an adult who chose to do the avtion that led to cause the accident which David was very directly linked to, cause he was driving the thing. , since the begining the thing was syupid and wrong and id I'm not mistaken Jeff had the idea and then told David to do it for their vlogs. So it's complicated but there isn't just one to blame imo. Now david didn't seem very preocupied by the accident and what happened to jeff was extremely serious and damaging and he just was so casual about it. Idk I don't like him at all.

The thing that shocks me about Dobrik is he is the youngest member of the Vlog Squad. And yet he is the leader of people like Jason Nash who is in late 40s and Jeff Wittek who is 31. It it had been Jason Nash as the leader that would make sense. It's fascinating and scary at how in command he is and he's 24. He's been a leader since he was 16/17.... 16.

It's really a solid example that wisdom or maturity doesn't always increase with age. The fact that someone half your age or 5+ years younger than you can fully take advantage of you is very telling. Something in your life needs to be reassessed.
