Well I started to listen to Cure later in 1984 or 1983 in my country Argentina. I didn't even know a damm word of English, anyway I'd bought a little book with Cure lyrics both in English and translated to Spanish. Whatever they said, I really got deeply depressed by the music and at the same time really loved those tunes. As someone said, all that stuff coincided with a difficult period of my loving life. Now as a mid happy man of 60 can overcome all those times and enjoyd Cure songs as well as their poetry. Long live Mr Smith's art!

@@martinquarton184 Hello Martin, I went to see them at Tiffany's, Milton St (I think) June '79 on their 3 Imaginary Boys' UK tour. I didn't see them at Sandpipers but I saw them again in the autumn of '79 when they supported Souxsie & the Banshee on their Join Hands UK tour at the Nott'm United Sports Centre. I think RS played the S&tB set as 2 members of her band went AWOL during that tour. Nott'm a great place to see bands, during that era, though I'm sure this remains the same today too.

It really was. To be fair this applies to the UK as a whole. In Scotland we had Rezillos, Skids, Zones, Scars, Simple Minds, The Postcard mob, Fire Engines and loads others. These were bands you could see and meet almost weekly. I think we assumed it was just the way things were
@brettblute77392 жыл бұрын
I have just been thinking, this music is 42 yrs. old. Now I think of what I thought of the music that came out 42 yrs. before this did in 1980. Music of the 1940's was largely Orchestral, I like some of it but it was a chore to chill with my Grandparents and listen to this on the Old Victor Victrola, hand crank Phonograph. I miss it now but it is truly sweet to hear The Cure and see what a big impact they have, on most of the bands I still listen to and they are still vital. Now, to see Robert Smith coming up on at least 3 new releases this year; I feel truly blessed. I'm still "Standing on The Beach".
@snoopyboobs2 жыл бұрын
yea, this is standard generational bias, everybody thinks the music they grew up with was special. I love music from the 1980's because I was a teenager hanging out with my friends, having fun. My mom feels the same way about music from the 60's, neither one of us is wrong.
@Schmidtelpunkt Жыл бұрын
@@snoopyboobs Yes, nostalgia is a thing. But still there was a period between the 50s and the 90s when pop music was invented and there was a hug acceleration in the progress of the media and production, discovering uncharted territory, allowing each generation to distance itself from the previous one. I don't think this happens the same way musically anymore.

Gone were the days of the buzzcock-nervous churning guitar of F-i-r-e in C-a-i-r-o (although this vibe occasionally reappears as in Play for Today). This is the 17 Seconds crawling phase, flanger-drowned, melancholic, mostly slowed-down, with added atmospheric synth (although sometimes it is barely audible in the mix).
