After watching their 2003 Trilogy shows on Blu-Ray (three full albums in sequence: Pornography, Disintegration, and Bloodflowers), I remember thinking if ever saw the Cure live, I could probably die happy if they opened with "Plainsong." Fast forward to 2016, and I saw them live, and to my eternal joy they opened with "Plainsong" (no guarantee on that tour, as they often opened with "Shake Dog Shake" or "Tape"), and the second song they played was... "Pictures of You." They played thirty-four songs (three encores!) that afternoon/evening.

Absolute masterpiece, they played it, in its entirety plus some other tracks like push and esten at the Sydney Opera house to mark the 30th anniversary. Songs like homesick and Plainsong were so beautiful.

Same. I was young and dumb and was "too cool" to listen to them because I was trying to associate my dumb-ass middle school/early high school persona to harder music! Also, Love Song would come on every morning followed by Personal Jesus by Depeche mode on the school bus when I was half asleep and hungry and thought that was the only song they had. Fortunately, it only took a few years to fall in love with them and also see them live.

One of the best, influential alternative, indie, post-punk, new wave (darkwave/gothic) bands, kind of shoegazy/ethereal/psychedelic, too that came around late '70s. Gained mainstream during the '80s and '90s. Lex is spot on as well. Check out more of The Cure! Also take a deep dive into similar goth bands to them like Killing Joke, Sisters of Mercy, Depeche Mode, Sioxsee and the Banshees, Joy Division, The Church, Echo and the Bunnymen, and others.

There is an 8 minute long version of this song which I personally think is the definitive version. Lex is absolutely right though. This song isn't sad to me, despite the subject matter. It fills me with hope too, it's pure, wistful remembrance of love lost. It's beautiful and fragile but ultimately comforting in a very odd way. It's simply a song that speaks to me. I go though phases of loving different songs but Pictures of You has never been far from my heart. If there's one last song I ever hear in my life this would be the one I want to go out on. Just perfection.

The Cure tends to write songs using a minor modality of a major key. This creates a vibe that is melancholy yet hopeful. Robert is singing about the grief of loss, but it's not a pit of despair. Both the words and music have a certain joy in remembering the happy moments together.

Y'all need to watch the fantastic movie Sing Street. Set in the 1980s, it's about a young Irish boy who starts a band to impress a girl and escape his troubles, of which he has many. Of note, the film introduces the concept of "happy sad," and the music of the Cure is given as a definitive example. So you're both right on this one. Much of the Cure's catalog is a unique blend of hopefulness and melancholy. Tip: If you watch the movie, turn your subtitles on. Some of the Irish accents are think enough that it's easy to miss a few lines. SO worth it, though!

A longstay of the british indie band scene starting late 70s and developed more mainstream as 80s progressed. Robert Smith still going strong. Seen them live several times in the 80s Glastonbury to a live concert in France. Like The Smiths wrote catchy melancholy songs. Always loved this and that great intro. A typical product of the early UK Indie scene. Indeed this has been used in several movies. I think notably in a John Hughes 90s movie, The Vow, but recently Mr robot.

I discovered The Cure in the late 80s. This song was a sad love song, creative and haunting. Their music covers a broad spectrum of sounds yet the common denominator is the originality. My husband and I were in the early years of our marriage and Love Song was a favorite too, of course. We lost our first born shortly before her 2nd birthday. A beautiful little spirit with huge eyes whom everyone who met her said she looked like a doll. She did. This song took on a new meaning after she passed. Plain Song is another. But the fact that one can feel their songs on various levels is part of their talent. They paved the way for others, Green Day comes to mind. So lovely seeing you both react. Thank you for sharing! 😽💋🎶

These guys pioneered mope rock and were part of the soundtrack to my college years. When I first discovered ‘college radio’ they were one of the groups that set the stage.

If I'm recalling correctly, this song was written after a fire destroyed Robert and his wife's house and he was lamenting about all the pictures that were destroyed in the fire... Speaking of fire, you should check out their song "Burn" from the Crow soundtrack Also, Robert and his wife are STILL married... lifelong romance in real life

Well remembered. Apparently he found his wallet in the remains and one of the pictures of his wife in that became the cover for the single.

That makes sense because he has like a longing to his voice in this. Like he's really heartbreaking. That's how it makes me feel. It tugs at my heart!😢

The Cure is a deep rabbit hole. Huge catalog too, with seemingly infinite remixes. Check out “Close to Me”. Original from “The Head On the Door”, or the one from “Mixed-Up”.

This song is brilliant and beautiful. It's also to me more about loss. It could be death it could be an old friendship or an old love that you reminisce about- maybe the dude got dumped like you said Brad - but over time you often forget the specifics and zone in on the vibe which this song is all about. It's just a deep resonant melancholia about how hard it is to keep love alive. It's a goodbye kiss to the dearly departed -alive or dead.

Now you're in the good stuff. Believe it or not that's a shortened version. It has such a hypnotic, mantra-like quality I can listen to it for hours (OK lots of minutes) without getting bored. Yes very positive sound, I completely agree.

Absolutely perfect song and album. Top 5 albums for me. This is a perfect song to showcase Robert Smith’s underrated guitar skills.

Have loved The Cure through their many lineup changes since their Early Cure Elvis Costello inspired post punk, through to the darker sounds of Pornography, Robert's solo venture with Steve Severin..The Glove( worth checking out) , the psychedelic fun of The Walk , to mid eighties Head On The Door... Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, and of course Disintegration...I loved the Mix recordings of early nineties, to Blood Flowers, Co- labs with Gorillaz and Chvrches..Robert, his looks( which have gone through changes) and his voice( never changes) are the thread that has kept The Cure together and no doubt Robert and the rest of the band will deliver on these two new albums to come! Glasgow Barrowlands 1984, featured Andy Anderson on drums my all time favourite concert...Though I did love them at Sydney Opera House , Pinkpop in Germany and Glastonbury 2019.. I'm now 59 and Im still telling people I'm not a Goth, never been one... I'm a Cure fan!
