avangardic, deeply sad, a great song and great performance! Thank all members of the Cure at this time who had perfomed it. I so much love the album "The Top".

Sconclusionato, stra-fatto, un ritmo disturbato e lui che dimentica le parole, eppure una delle esecuzioni migliori di questo pezzo. Grande Rob! :) Rambling, hype, disturbed rhythm and Rob forgetting word, and yet one of the best of this song!

This song is a curved ball. I heard it years ago and it was like "great". Today... well, I think is full of MAGIC. Literal. Beyond belief...

I don't think Andy Anderson get's enough credit for shaping the modern sound of The Cure. I mean, every drummer after him has had the same technical style.
@sharrison5866 жыл бұрын
his work was so precise, much more than any other drummer they had. No one plays Shake Dog Shake like he did. Just found out today the band is nominated for the RnR Hall of Fame (a sham but whatever) and all the past band members are honored in the nomination...except Andy and Phil Thornalley.

This was a hard time for The Cure, and especially for Robert Smith. 1984 (The Top) was immediatly after the dark trilogy (Faith, Pornography and 17 Seconds) and in a period where the group was dealing massively with drugs and alcohol. I think it's evident that Robert is somewhat sad and tired.

This "hard time" (stoned allday long) was imho the most creative period of Bob´s singalong.

The Top album has always been controversial. Probably for two reasons, (a) the production which has a lot of trapped-in-the-mid-'80s signal-processing, (b) the fact Robert was experimenting with his voice a lot - this was his peak period for both falsetto (three falsetto showcases in succession, at the center of the album) and for "weeping vibrato". Maybe that was some sort of musical result of his hallucinogen experimentation (and I say that with an awareness that in '83-'84 he was actually trying every recreational drug imaginable, including a relapse into the old devil's-dandruff). It's a pity his performances on the tour were so dissolute, his high/low-point for onstage memory-lapses - but I like the live versions of this song, which suggest he's addressing his audience as some kind of lifeline (please come back...all of you?...just one of you?). Better yet when they remember to include that incongruous little ragtime-piano fill near the end...and when, rather than reprise the spinning-top sound-effect, Robert goes for the feedback-loop option (as if he were still in the Banshees)
