I'm not really concerned about battery chemistry except in the way that there should be more than one. The more useful chemistries we have, the more batteries we can produce, and this is important to the energy revolution. The energy revolution is vital to the long term survival of civilization. BMW drivers are highly brand loyal. Sales teams are notoriously ill-equipped to articulate viability of an EV for their specific buyers. I think one of the few weaknesses of EVs is reliance on lead-acid to start the system. I think they do that to allow starting in the cold. They don't want to drain the lithium battery to keep clocks and locks running while allowing the lithium battery to go offline. The key is the ability to keep lithium warm on a cold night. It's not a problem if lithium is plugged in all night and can apply heat but if parked at the airport in winter for two weeks... Surely some engineer can think of a better way. Perhaps the old hand-crank will make a comeback. :-)

We need this !! Great Video ! Oh yes we have a long way to go get our manufacturing back..... and yes we really need to, not only because we have a big problem with China aggressive actions against Taiwan, and India, and also its totalitarian social model of no freedom , but also for the world we need to have new innovation and manufacturing around the globe and not just in one country. Distributed manufacturing means less global shipping and a new economic model of distributed rather than centralized operations , such as in Solar , food, etc. The Sodium batteries will be the majority of batteries because sodium is so much more abundant on earth, far less processing and it is far safer. Of Course Super cars are sexy ! but for the transition to all EV's we need the Aptera !! and other super efficient, inexpensive , oh did I say inexpensive ? Like ya, like 10,000. like the Chinese are already doing, we need to get the "Bug" of ev's ( VW beetle ) which was only a couple thousand dollars in 1965......... or the Model T ford , cheapest car, which created the car over horse boom !!

I'm confused about one of the "Cons" for the sodium ion battery. You said that sodium ion had a shorter lifespan, yet the next chart shows up to 50,000 charge cycles. Is the "lifespan" reference in regard to the lower energy density, instead of the number of charge cycles?
@MrRobertPogson
@MrRobertPogson 24 күн бұрын
Yes, I noticed this too. Some explanation is required. Lithium cells tend not to die but degrade in capacity very slightly each year/cycle. Do sodium ion cells die? Do they pay attention to the calendar? Enquiring minds want to know.

would like to hear your perspective on the best of the emerging chemistries. aluminum graphene sounds pretty good. but also some of the new polymer printed batteries seem to be game changers. IMO the chemistry development and also motor/powertrain development for EVs is constantly improving but is still not mature. so current models will depreciate quickly as the new chemistries and drivetrains come on line. during that time, EV values will be in flux. I am not sure how large battery manufacturing investments are stable will the continued innovation in the industry. maybe you have some opinion?

Graphene presents sourcing and implementation challenges. Chemistries with density advantages will enable new applications such as flight and high performance EVs at higher costs. I am suggesting you include more info on these techs, including industry feedback on them with pros and cons like you did for the sodium-ion batteries so viewers understand the evolving industry. indepth discussion of particular models is good if you are in the market and looking now, but maybe your audience would be interested in the trend to what is coming along with the model marketing info. tks again

I'm REALLY charged up for sodium batteries for home storage. Especially with companies coming out with modular systems where capacity can be easily added as can be afforded and/or needed. Now even lower income households would be able to add storage for arbitrage or to pair with solar now, or in the future. Speaking of batteries and BMW, they partnered with Our Next Energy who made the 750 mile range Model S battery pack that was the same size as the stock pack. Hello Gene, China started producing EVs at volume before we did and they've already gotten quite good at utilizing the valuable materials inside end-of-life battery packs. On previous episodes of The Current, we have extensively covered several battery recycling facilities here in the USA and we have delivered statistics you are looking for. Most of that coverage has revolved around partnerships between Redwood Materials and the major EV producers. In the USA, very few battery packs have reached end of life, so the recycling is primarily millions of cells rejected in the manufacturing process. www.redwoodmaterials.com/ Here is the full playlist of previous episodes of The Current: kzbin.info/aero/PL5nuLBN5_QSe16RQVLKxHwMVVtJrVd59D -Producer Tim

@@MissGoElectric Here's the concern, the IRSI states; "States currently have a patchwork of policy and regulations related to battery recycling - 10 states and the District of Columbia require producers to offer or fund battery recycling; 20 states and Puerto Rico have recycling requirements in effect; and 20 states lack any such requirements. • Collaborative efforts amongst all stakeholders are crucial to create a seamless and effective battery recycling ecosystem. " NY, CA, and MN appear to have well defined policies but the rest is a jumble of guideline to nothing at all. ISRI when on to state that: "Approximately 47 percent of respondents mistakenly believe lithium-ion batteries from EVs are not recyclable, while 37 percent are unaware that recycled lithium-ion batteries can be used to produce new EV batteries. Additionally, 39 percent of respondents did not know that critical minerals within EV batteries can be recycled multiple times without significant performance loss." Personally, given the state of the industry in the US, I would only lease an EV until there's a clear process from purchase, to ongoing maintenance, to recycling. BTW, my local Ford dealer hates EV's and will not carry a Mach-E. Not a vote for EV adoption.

I think Tesla already has a $20k car; all they need do is drop FSD and a lot of the un-need features on the model 3; e.g., drop the glass roof, no front motor and no transmission; instead install two motors, perhaps hub motors, at the rear corners, use sodium batteries. Like Henry Ford did, offer the car only in black. I'm sure there are other changes, perhaps in the assembly processes that could be identified to drop the price...then there is no need to finance a model 2 development effort...make the model 3 cheaper to build and you have the car that all of us can buy!

Without the DoE, we wouldn't have a neutral entity responsible for tracking what we have and how we're shifting to renewables. You can't rely on companies to give honest reporting or to even report at all. DoE in addition to many other important tasks, acts like the census for our domestic energy usage and sourcing. Elon Musk and Donald Trump don't care about a fast transition to decarbonization, as witnessed by their climate denying talk on Monday. Don't believe them when they tell you regulation is the problem. They are lying to you, but that's what Musk and Trumo are known for.

Here's an example. A volunteer leader at the environmental group I worked for stated that lithium batteries were 95% round trip efficient at grid storage and that pumped hydro storage is 50% efficient. I was able to quickly find proof from a DoE study of actual grid storage data that showed that lithium batteries are 82% round trip efficient and pumped hydro storage is 79% round trip efficient as reported by an actual survey of energy companies operating them. This particular study was out of the EIA, a division of DoE. The lithium battery salesmen (Musk) led the industry to believe that battery storage is inherently more efficient than they actually are after you factor in HVAC and other losses. www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=46756

@@MrRobertPogson Tesla is building a battery plant in US with CATLs help . Buying equipment from them and paying a licensing fee on the tech. So many EVs being sold have terrible batteries.

Like all new technology, prices will become more accessible as production is achieved at scale. Commodity automobiles are not stores of value or wise investments. Anything which is readily available will depreciate according to the laws of supply and demand. We know that EV manufacturers will continue to innovate and compete, which will improve the value proposition for new car buyers. That means the value of inferior EVs which were produced without the advantages of scale will also become an improved value proposition for second-hand buyers. All of this is good for buyers. Combustion commodity vehicles are not the future. Their resale value will also be poor as they are replaced by superior technology. -Producer Tim
