Best part about this is that Batman seemingly recognised Basil was in the middle of a supervillain origin story, and tried to steer him away from that fate. Basil had a chance to make something good come out of his tragedy, but still actively chose to embrace the "monster" instead. (Granted, the chemicals must have pretty badly damaged his brain by then, so maybe it wasn't really a conscious decision so much as an impulse, but you see my point?)

I dont know, man is like it was not like he was a criminal killer or anything.. but Batman just wanted to use the poor basil to "HELP" him to put the only thing that makes this man crippled man become a man again. IF you think about it, probably basil was gonna try to become the best moster he could be in the name of his father and them desapier forever... Like this was his only goal, and is silly ideia to think that Batman was gonna help him with anything.. because Batman even try to help Two faces with the bests plastic surgeons.. (and Two faces is a fucking pysacopath).. but Basil, he only offers redemption to the people tha see him as a monster..... Wow how good of him, go to a man that lost not only his hoke carrier but all that he cares abou and his father for the "great of good"...

I've always liked Clayface, he's always been a fun character that can be very good for creating a sense of unease. He also sometimes works as an unwilling good guy, which can be good for some plot points and such. But one thing this comic suggests that would have made him infinitely more terrifying is that he uses those chemicals that ruined him on other people. That concept is horrifying, and I'm almost happy we don't see what happened to his ex after she was splashed.

It feels like everyone was giving Basil WAY too much crap just cuz he was stealing stuff to save his career. Batman should have known that outing him, ruining his career, handcuffing him, and forcing him to show his face to as many people as possible all while he's in a super volatile state of mind is kind of the very last thing you'd want to do to a vain actor. The first time Basil met Batman he literally caved his face in, I think the least Bats coulda done was say "I'm sorry" when he woke up. In fact, Batman coulda told Basil's producer about what the chemical was doing or just ousted the company himself instead of straight up ruining Basil's name.

I'm not convinced Batman knew Basil's "deal" when he punched him. He knew he was stealing chemicals from a company, not his identity or anything. To Batman it was just another guy stealing shit. However, if Batman had just stopped, and listened, to this criminal, instead of punching him immediately, he might've been able to reach an understanding. No one in this story made all the right choices. Batman isn't perfect. He makes mistakes. And sometimes those mistakes lead to the creation of a whole new villain.

Batman didn't want to ruin Basil's career, he was giving Basil a chance to take control of the situation. Testifying and stopping the man that made the chemical that disfigured him, gave him brain damage, and was a danger to more people out there would've made this bad situation lean in Basil's favor in the long run. He lost his role in this movie and was labeled a crook, but helping Batman and Harvey would save his reputation and keep his career somewhat intact

As someone who was born with a cleft palate and has had to have a lot of plastic surgery over the years to not only look normal, but to actually live, Clayface is my favorite villain. All of his stories revolve around disfigurement and body dysphoria, and how hard it is to move through life when you fall outside the norm. I understand the pain of not recognizing the person in the mirror after a surgery, knowing that it’s you. People don’t seem to understand the feeling. Clayface is the embodiment of these feelings, and I find him captivating because of that. It’s hard not to want him to get the help he needs. He really highlights the failures of how Batman views the world. The system isn’t just, and people are complex. Good people do bad things sometimes for good or understandable reasons. We don’t know anyone’s reasons for something. I’m not saying Clayface shouldn’t have faced consequences, but the consequences shouldn’t have been having a muscular man punch him in his very recently disfigured face. That caused way more harm than just arresting him.

Lets be realistic, disfigurement to that degree would have absolutely ruined everything for him regardless of what the comic implies. His girlfriend would probably have eventually left him anyway because of the emotional stress, he absolutely wouldn’t have kept the role in the movie or any movie ever again no matter how hard people would fight for him, he was far beyond the help of plastic surgery, probably unable to secure any form of job, and he would be estranged from society for the rest of his life. People are cruel.

@@StickySauce101 Yeah, he would likely have had a bunch of walk-on "Creature of the week" roles on TV shows, and done some cameo monster suitwork for a bit before getting back to being the lead monster in the next universal studios monster movie. but his career could have recovered. one of the best horror films of the black and white "talkies" era is arguably Tod Browning's "Freaks", with a cast that is like 75% deformed professional circus freakshow acts. for many of them it wasn't their only role. the dwarf that played "Hans", Harry Earles, was also one of the representatives of the lollipop guild in "The Wizard of Oz", with the woman who played his dwarf wife "Frieda" in Freaks(his sister Daisy) as well as 2 of their other siblings playing various Munchkins in the "Munchkinland" and "follow the yellow brick road" scenes. Johnny Eck, the "amazing half-boy" seen in Freaks, got film roles doing suitwork for creature fx, most notably he was the "Gooney Birds" in 3 tarzan films, Tarzan the Ape Man, Tarzan Escapes, and Tarzan's Secret Treasure. he also worked as a magician's assistant for a magician named Rajah Raboid with his "Normal" fraternal twin brother Robert around 1937, and they had the absolute best "sawing a person in half" illusion, since they could swap Robert for Johnny and a dwarf actor dressed as Johnny's legs, and then have the legs jump out of the box and run around the stage, prompting Johnny to climb out of the box and run after his legs on his hands after the illusion for shock value. perfection. Michael Berryman, the actor best known for playing Pluto in the original "The Hills have Eyes" 1 & 2, wasn't using prosthetic fx makeup in that role, he actually looks like that due to a genetic disorder called hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, and he's had a very prolific career, playing in films such as "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", "Weird Science", "Star Trek IV", "Star trek V", "The Guyver", "The Crow"(deleted scene), "The Devil's Rejects", "Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster", as well as TV shows like "Star Trek:The Next Generation", "X-Files", and "Tales from the Crypt". i've always wanted to see him in the lead role in a "Nosferatu" remake, i think he'd absolutely kill it in that role.

The tension between Batman and Clayface is palpable. I recall the animated series had a similar type of tension in an episode where he was no longer able to sustain himself and was falling apart. He found a way to sustain himself but he had to steal it. Batman was a real bastard in that episode and they made it seem like he died as a result. I do hope his utilization in the Pattinson Batman 2 is just as impactful and they have moments such as this. That was a great comic and a powerful story, particularly the part between father and son.

Only because he didn't like the fact that she saw his real face, not because she said anything about it. Not only that but once he shows up as clayface, a true and honest monster, what does he do to repay her? He throws chemicals is her face, disfiguring her. EDIT: did some digging for you. so the next time we see her, she's turned into "Mudface", the chemicals gave her the powers of Clayface but none of his control. she joins the Victim Syndicate, a group of people who's lives were ruined by getting caught in the crossfire between batman and his villains. she blames batman, not clayface, for her situation. here's a pic of her: static.wikia.nocookie.net/marvel_dc/images/2/2d/Glory_Griffin_%28Prime_Earth%29_0001.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20161109180558

clayface, when written well, can be amazing. my first "oh snap, i'm straight up sleepin' on this fool" moment with clayface was the new batman adventures episode called "Growing pains", in which a separated chunk of clayface he sent out as a scout disguised as a young girl gains sentience/independence and has no memory of what she is, and robin tries to save/protect her, but ultimately she gets reabsorbed by clayface. before this episode clayface is just a mid level criminal, a thief, hired muscle, etc., but after this, as far as Tim Drake is concerned, Clayface just committed murder.

You're telling me Basil auditioned to be in a movie that was basically about the original Basil story? Amazing. No notes. Also, I loved this newer take on Clayface. His tragic origin, road to redemption, his friendship with Cass, and his camaraderie with the Bat-Family, I loved it all. I hate that it got reset. At least Man-Bat is still good (at least, last I checked).

This is basically an adaptation of the animated series' take on tbe character. One of several instances of that show taking old, silly villains and transforming into something great. Mr. Freeze is the most notable example of this.

Some are angry at the lawyer, but I'm personally angry at the director. She went to a man that was at his weakest possible moment and chose to psychologically beat them up. Such a deconstruction only serves to put the speaker to be higher than the listener. And I don't think that was her intent despite only seeing a few lines from her. A far better option would have been to keep him in the show despite his criminal allegations his story would only Elevate the story she was trying to tell. This from the few lines she had about what the show even was about. Might have prevented Clayface from ever existing. TLDR; I'm angry at the directors mightier than tho speech. Felt it had a bigger detriment to his health then his lawyers few lines.

yeah. have him use the Renu to change his appearance, use the original origin story as a basis for his criminality and spend the movie having batman dealing with essentially "the thing/invasion of the body snatchers", where literally anyone in the room could be clayface at any time, then end it with the chemical bath, filmed in such a way that if they wanted to try and bring him back as the supernatural shapeshifter later they could, but if they don't think they can pull it off, they can just make that his death scene.

I find the saddest part is Basil had chance after chance to turn his life around, but kept blowing it. If he didn't steal from the renew factory, he would have kept his part. If he worked with Batman and dent, he would have gone down as a hero and tragic public figure that probably would have been a new career for him. But he just wouldn't listen. His downfall was his own. Even his disfigurement was his fault since he was talking on the phone while driving. Unlike Mr Freeze, Poison Ivy, Two face and others who were victims of someone else turning them into monsters, Karlo did it all on his own. He became Clayface all on his own and no one else is to blame
