So... Curse of Monkey Island was one of the first games I ever played a pirated version of. A friend had bought a thing called a "Dragon Disc" which was a collection of random new games, the only two I remember are this and the first GTA. I was really confused as to why Guybrush went from being on a ship, to being on a beach with a golden statue - all the way up until maybe 2 or 3 years later when I bought an official copy and realised that, in order to save space, the pirate team behind "Dragon Disc" had removed all the FMV. So that was a shock. Great video though! Always thought this artstyle was fantastic, even though everyone whinged at the time (and whinge every time a new MI comes out). The originals were great, but so nice to see everything in (at the time) HD with voice acting.

oh man, I can't imagine how confusing parts of the game would be with out the cutscenes! even with then there is a bit near the end that feels like its either missing a gameplay segment or a cutscene to explain what's going on. I do remember those sorts of rips, missing videos, highly compress or missing music and voices. all to make it smaller to download. and yeah it looked amazing!

@@GouldFishOnGames I'm probably going to revisit 'The Curse of Monkey Island' on SCUMM and I've actually managed to pick up 'Escape' on Amazon Marketplace on the PS2 (didn't even know it was released on that!). I'm assuming the PS2 version is pretty accurate to the PC original?

While this game retconned the twist ending in Monkey Island 2, an upcoming Monkey Island game seems to be attempting to fix that.

Nice video, that's also one of my favourite Monkey Island games (but SM2 is still my favourite). It took me a long while to get round to playing it, as I was still playing Day of the Tentacles when it first came out and did not want to start another Lucas Arts game until I finished it. So it was a bargain bin purchase for me so that worked out.

This is my favourite in the series, it made good use of new (at the time) hardware without trying too hard & looked gorgeous for it. The graphics have aged relatively well thanks to the games aesthetic, even if the addition of voice acting made the Voodoo lady even more… “problematic.” That hasn’t aged well. I can’t help feeling glossing over the ending of Monkey Island 2 was the only way to go as anything else would have felt cheap, even if glossing over it isn’t ideal. Murray/Bob was indeed a great edition along with a bunch of other characters & peeling the back skin was amusingly gross. Great video, thanks. You’ve done the game justice.

Thanks mate, its a wonderful game that made it so much harder to do a video on. as I wanted to get it just right. and yeah sorta saying "and he escaped" was the best route for the start of the game. I'm interested to see how Return handles is.

Lovely review Mr GouldFish :) I never completed Curse but loved the art style. I think it was the perfect visual progression at the time from the pixel art. Although Monkey Island 2 is still my favourite :)

Yeah, Monkey Island 2 feels so good. but there is also something about Curse, the art and the comedy is right there.

I like Curse of Monkey Island better than Monkey Island 2. The last chapter and ending are rushed and a let-down but I love the rest of the game ! My favorite is the original though. The Ultimate Talkie Edition (VGA+speech) is still one of the very best point & click adventure games. Monkey Island 2 though is a mixed bag for me. Don`t get me wrong it`s still a great game, but some of the puzzle design goes a bit too far when it comes to "moon logic", the scanned-in background graphics are a step-back compared to the original pixel-art, there are far too many Star Wars references that got old pretty quick plus I really dislike Dinky Island and the ending. Return to Monkey Island might change my opinion on that though. We`ll see...

Murray definitely stole the show, and like him, I have a high widows peak. It could do with a remaster to show off that great animation and art. You should do Grim Fandango next and Full Throttle. Keep it up Mr Fish.

I'm sure this will generate a whole bunch of comments, but I've never really gotten into Grim Fandango. I've tried a few times and just bounced off. I'm sure I'll get into it at some point but its not happened so far.

One question, why did you call Murray Bob? He said his name for you. I remember enjoying this but never completing it.

I was a joke, as that is what Guybrush asks to call him in the game. at which he responds, "I'm Murray!"
