Bojan revealed that a few seasons after breaking in the Barcelona first team he started suffering immense panic attacks, and was battling mental health issues due to the pressure put into him. The comparisons with Messi grew stronger as he was having good games and quickly they started affecting his performances. At Barcelona the moment a player performs well comparison comes with the territory: next Messi , next Piqué next Xavi next whoever. Deulofeu later on said the same. I grew up watching everyone labeling Giovanni dos Santos as the next Ronaldinho. Honestly it's a petty. Monaco people tried the same with Mbappe, the next Henry. Henry himself had to say Mbappe must become the next Mbappe. Be his own man. Media and clubs are looking for stories to tell so they build unrealistic narrative. Messi for a while was the next Maradona and had to outgrow it by becoming the player we met.

For me the title of 'The Next Messi' is misleading because it's come to mean 'the next best player in the world' or 'next best player for Barcelona' but I think most people want the next MESSI. The only player to play during Messi's career that is genuinely comparable to him in style of play is Eden Hazard. That's it... That's a tragedy. And whilst Hazard at his best could dribble and score like Messi, (although not even half as regularly as Messi would,) he lacked Messi's greatest skill, his passing. Nobody passes like Messi, DeBruyne, Iniesta, Xavi, Zidane, Cruyff, no one. Messi scores like the best forward, passes and sees the pitch like the best midfielder, dribbles like the best winger, and in his prime, even ran like the best wingers too! THAT is what people really want when they talk about the 'Next Messi.' And for me, sadly, I have very little faith in that happening. Really the only thing giving me hope of that happening is all the people saying they never thought a player as talented as Maradona would come along and then thankfully Messi did. But even then, let's say by some miracle someone comes along with the requisite natural talent to rival Messi, that along is not going to be enough. As this video points out Messi trained from age 4, got scouted to Newell's Old Boys at age 6 getting the best coaching in Argentina and played in his favourite position and scored nearly 500 goals in a side so unbelievably talented they were called the 'Machine of '87.' THEN at age 13 he got scouted and trained at La Masia now the WORLD's best training facility, and AGAIN he was a part of an even MORE talented group called Barcelona's greatest EVER youth side winning a treble with players like Pique and Fabregas. THEN he progressed through 4 youth teams in a single year and by age 16 he a fringe member of the actual Barca team which had an event more talented collection of young players like Xavi, Iniesta, etc considered to be the most talented group of youngsters ever who all understood each other at an almost intrinsic level because they were taught to play the same style for so long. And crucially for Messi's mental development he had Ronaldinho, the most talented player in the world at the time, recognise his talent even as young teenager in the youth side and make a deliberate effort to spend time with him, draw him out of his introverted psyche and tell him that one day he will be the best player in the world. At just age 16 he got called up to play in the main Barcelona side, comfortably a top 5 side in world football and after a couple of games he scored his first goal assisted by none other than Ronaldinho! Gaining match experience under Rijkaard for a few years and establishing himself in the first side alongside world class players. Then the next manager to come in, Pep Guardiola, happened to also be a La Masia graduate himself and was uniquely positioned to understand the benefits of that style of play and to see just how incredible this crop of youngsters coming through from the academy was and taking advantage of that he implement a revolutionary Tiki-Taka style of play that perfectly emphasised the strengths whilst limiting the weaknesses of the core Barca players and at the young age of 22 he made Messi the centrepiece of this side, playing as a false 9. Which ended up being so successful that they're widely considered to be the best team in the history of the sport! With Messi individually winning 4 straight Ballon d'Ors which at the time more Ballon d'Ors than any other player in the HISTORY history of the sport! Meaning by age 25, the age most players START their prime Messi was already arguably the GOAT, being Barca's top scorer in their history, breaking Gerd Muller's record of Goals Scored in a calendar year by scoring 91 Goals and 24 Assists (115 G/A in 69 games 1.66G/A per Game), winning the most Ballon d'Ors ever, part of the greatest team ever, possessing an enormous trophy cabinet and the best highlight reel in history. So again, let's say that somehow a player comes along with the requisite natural skill to rival Messi. The chances of them ALSO having as fortunate a career as Messi is basically 0.0000000000001. You'll almost certainly never see that confluence of events and individuals ever again. Messi wasn't just the most talented, he was also the luckiest.
@Fredding-The-Needle5 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's a shame really, but I get your point, everything fell into place for Messi. To be fair, I think you're right about hazard, he was the closest thing to Messi, and he wasn't even from la masia

I disagree mate. The closest thing to Messi was Neymar. He just lacked discipline and was injury prone but he had all the same tools Messi possessed. Neymar really had the ability to become to joint GOAT 🤞🏾
@PaddyMcMe20 күн бұрын
@@marvellousmaphela8138 Ahh to be clear I said Hazard because the way Hazard dribbles and shoots is very Messi-like where as Neymar dribbles and shoots completely different to Messi. That said I don't think Neymar has the scoring ability to be in the GOAT debate, for me he's more of a tricky, skillful 10 who can score at a great rate but not as a GOAT rate like Messi or CR7 or a true 9 like Suarez, R9, Muller, Haaland, Lewandowski, etc. I think the expectation that he should be in the GOAT debate is a big part of why people hate on Neymar so much even though his stats when he does play are actually very impressive and if not for (what I think) are unrealistic expectations he'd be looked upon as more of a success. I think Neymar was more like a hybrid of Ronaldinho and R9, so like 75% as skillful as Ronaldinho and 75% as good a scorer as R9. And because he's not as great as either of them at their best, a lot of people see him as a failure when really he was this other thing.

I always liked Bojan and Deulofeu. Bojan was too striker oriented tho, he didn't have a similar adaptability nor act as a playmaker. Deulofeu seemed like a complete forward and was great at adapting. He was definitely the closest to what they wanted in "The next Messi". The issue, is the club never cared enough to actually build either of them. Bojan and Deulofeu proved they could reach the heights, were consistent and impactful, yet never had the support that should have been given. Bojan was suppressed and disregarded for new talent, Deulofeu always brought back, but never allowed to grow. At the end of the day, bad coaching and general mismanagement kill careers and ruin potential

There is a difference between “Dutch Total Football” and “Spanish Tiki Taka” The difference being that the former has every player being able to play in any given position as the situation demands; and the latter, which is letting the ball do all the work instead of the player by keeping possession of the ball with short passes rather than skillful dribbling.
@filipe10messiyou4 ай бұрын
Actually there was never such thing as a Tiki Taka in Barcelona. Guardiola himself hated the word, because it misrepresents their philosophy by far. Guardiola's Barcelona didn't play to keep the possession with short passes. Instead, it was a system with emphasis on positional play and attracting pressure to exploit spacing.

As much as I have been a fan of Barcelona and a huge fan of Messi, I agree with your assessment of Barcelona it's been a problem I have noticed since Pep left, I see him recently and it's truly so different a change in the man he's more secure and he has the backing of the organization and fans, which he didn't have from Sandro Rosell who wanted him out mainly because he was a disciple of Johan Cruyff and total football, Pep never received the support or recognition he deserved, and it affected him and his relationships, and it seems that is the way the Barcelona Board handled its young players, Bojan was such a talent and the way the catalan newspapers either knowingly or not uses their words to critical effect on the young players who do seem to want every young player to eventually turn out the same as Messi is appalling, I think that they are feeding off the way past players say that barca is the hardest and most difficult club to either play for or coach, it seems like they are out to prove it, their way of handling contracts and loans of the young players as difficult as possible, now it's almost impossible to have the drive and patience of young leo, but their needs to be something done for these kids, they have to become a little more determined but the club has got to find a way out of the past, times are different kids are different so the club has to adjust, or they will lose those diamonds in the rough, like Yamal and the others, I believe the quicker they get rid of Laporte and his constant talking of big things happening that never come or it's just to late, first the papers should stop the next Messi theme, and find away out of the financial black hole that they find themselves, can't believe that Bartholomew or however it is spelled got off without more punishment or they are just as careless, idk, but for everyone involved something has to happen, good portrayal,

I think i can give you more info on Giovanni dos Santos, he started playing for a football club his dad was manager (Sao Pablo or Santos if i remember correctly) in San Nicolas de los Garza amateur league (Nuevo Leon, Mexico) at that time that was the biggest amateur league in Mexico (around 96-99). At that time i used to play for Fuerzas Basicas Monterrey F.C for the 87 cat and the finals where all in the same field for all of the cat, so much part of our team stay after our match to watch other kids finals, there he was not only playing the 89 cat finals but also making it seem so easy and relaxed he scored like 7 goals and was sub at the second half so his brother Jona dos Santos could play (Jona was younger but played with the 89 cat) he also scored like 3 or 4 goals but was nothing like Gio could do. When the awards of the league took place i was awarded for best striker in 87cat with 21 goals i was so fk happy, then when came time for the 89cat awards i was just in shock, Gio took the striker award with 127 goals (a record that is still unbeated in the league). That week Monterrey F.C. offered his Dad to bring Gio and Jona to train in Basicas so they where training with the 89 cat and some times with 88 and 87. The dos Santos just stayed like 6 or 8 months training there and then they moved to Barcelona. For the time i saw him training and playing i could see that he played just to get his father proud, he didnt stayed after training to chill with the other players or just play more football in fact Jona was the one that was more open and played more after the training have ended, i think it wasnt the passion he was looking for, it just happens that he was a natural really good player.

I believe we won't see another Messi for another 10 years at least all these young guys have very little playing in the legue so it's hard to even compare them rn

Players performing so good in youth football that they have huge pressure to perform before their first game is a problem. Take Moukoko, if only nobody knew about his goalscoring record in the youth leagues. I think that there should be a law where youth football stats are automatically blocked on the internet or something, and the players names are filtered out from their devices so they can’t check what people are saying about them until they’re old enough

It's not possible to "become" Messi. I think young players should set a more realistic goal for themselves, because comparing themselves with Messi is self-destructive at best.

Its not the curse, its just that no player could match his career, people dont understand that a player like Messi doesnt happen that often, and it will take many more years until we get player like him again, and the way the modern football is going, its actually "if" we get again, because players these days sacrifice their career for money. Just look at how many years it took since Maradona, for Messi to happen, and in between them, there were many players labeled as "Next Maradona" and none of them matched him. So there is no "next Messi, Maradona, Cruyff..........etc.", there is just one, eventually two amazing talents that happen once in a while that blow us away and that`s it.

We had Pele, Maradona, Zidane, OG Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo CR7, Messi and other players in different era. We will never have next Pele, Maradona, Messi or Ronaldo. We will have somebody else different. We are fortunate to have Messi-Ronaldo era for over 15 years now. Hopefully, new era begins soon Mbappe-Yamal era.

The thing is there was search for the next Maradona long ago until we get Messi, the fans try to paint him as the next Maradona even call him failed Maradona until 2020 but then Argentina achieve 3 international trophy for only short time and now no one dare to call him next Maradona anymore instead they searching for the next Messi

For those who claim that lack of discipline or psychological issues were the main factors in the decline of these players:I will say that even if those aspects were solved,neither of them would have escaped the B/C class category.

I don’t think a lot of people remember just how much pressure there is to fill the boots of players like Pele, Maradona, Messi and Cristiano. 1 goal per match, you aren’t allowed to be injured, you can’t be tired, you can’t be sad, you can’t live outside of the pitch. You aren’t allowed to quit. I really do feel bad for those players. It’s an unrealistic request.

If we’re to look at the case of the next Argentine to lead Argentina to glory, it’s gonna be a left footed forward that was born in 2022, and in about 15 years, he’ll pop up in one of Europes top youth development systems and be balling out. Ofc he’ll be 2 inches taller than Messi and will be 5’9”. So the next left footed argentine was probably born 2 years ago
