As an Archaeologist, I'd say that the reason why everyone had very similar nightmares is because they had all been party to the same gossip of the events that happened with the Romani. The old woman, the scarecrow, the teeth. Over a few weeks and everyone knows. It's been less than a week since an incident in my small town occurred. Already, I know who did it, what they did, when they did it, and (to an extent) why. It's super Midsomer Murders stuff, so I won't give the details, but literally everyone is talking about these people's private lives to the nth degree before the police have even given an official statement on what happened. Also, I just realised the 'silver bullet' is also a reference to treating/curing disease, given that the wolf creature is a disease ended by a silver bullet much like penicillin was a 'silver bullet' to many diseases.

The whole 'waking up middle of the night' thing is actually really cool and it seems to be our natural tendency. How many of us have woken up at 3am for no reason? Just hang out for an hour or two (don't just lay in bed if you wake up stone cold sober - your anxiety machine wants you to be doing something else), and then go to bed for a few more hours. Your mileage may vary depending on your schedule, of course, but it's nice to enjoy the dawn and birdsong. Honestly, as someone who struggles with insomnia sometimes, a couple of hours of being awake pre-dawn and another round of sleep isn't that bad. I imagine it would be even nicer if I wasn't the only one awake.

Can't believe how much trouble a set of cursed dentures can cause. Great breakdown of a really interesting twist on lycanthropy! I have to wonder if removing the silver bullet would make the infection active again. In the hectic rush of a wartime hospital, it would be easy enough to mistake someone for dead when actually they were just unconscious and had very weak vital signs. Sure would be unfortunate if Edward was still potentially infectious and the bullet had only kept things dormant. ;)

@@RoanokeGaming I curious about the dream aspect... Kids hear EVERYTHING... so, what if a kid from one of the parents that killed the Romanians, heard the tale. They could have sat on stairs across the room, silently listening or through a wall connecting the dining/living room and their bedroom. What if the tale scared them so much, that they had a nightmare. Then they tell their closest friend(s) or family member(s). Eventually the story gets passed around. It scares people. Especially with how superstitious people were in those times and gabbing is their favorite past time. They have dreams about it and I am sure there will be variances to their dreams. Because we have all played "telephone" when telling stories and we know that the story will change over time during the re-telling. My point is, most people will have certain information that is for sure repeated... An open field, with a scarecrow, and that they see someone/something (paranoia and superstition) ~ so a ghost or witch. With such a mindset in those times, people tend to jump on bandwagons, start riots.... witch trials for example... so why not call it mass hypnosis; as the power of suggestion is real and strong. What do you think?

The "similar dreams" everyone is having may not have to do with the infection, but it could be a way to psychologically cope with the events that took place. As a commenter mentioned below, most people in the town must have heard one thing or another about the massacre (about the scarecrow man, the buried woman, etc) and children, who still remain innocent towards the ways of the world, might have more trouble digesting the issue. If they're not allowed to bring up the topic in conversation, they're bound to subconsciously bring it up in dreams. It may also explain why the Pathologist is the only one who dreams about his lost family (variation according to their own experiences or feelings on the subject).

Isn’t it weird how silver, a common thing in various unrelated cultures associated with subduing or curing the supernatural, has actual properties that relate to the neutralization of infective proteins?(or whatever they do, I’m no biologist). I just think that’s so interesting, and makes me wonder… the myth of vampires and werewolves across cultures is now speculated to be a reaction to a rabies infection, and then those same creatures being averse to silver; perhaps silver or some property/alloy of it may be the key to a potential cure for an active rabies infection.

Active Rabies is located within the brain itself. The virus travels up your body and when it hits your brain that's where it starts to reproduce rapidly. Which releases a flood of the virus inducing symptoms as it spreads down to the saliva glands, most of the issue comes from the fact that it uses your brain like a fortress. I suppose you could cure them of breathing with a silver bullet though. I don't know about generations back, but humans infected with rabies rarely if ever become aggressive, since we have cognitive thought to recognize what's causing the issue, we do not resort to snapping out like an injured animal.

As people have said, very interesting take on werewolves. Also appreciate the use of the Hunter’s Dream theme in Bloodborne in this video. Between the werewolves, the nightmares, the setting, and the fact that it’s literally a bloodborne pathogen, it’s fitting background music for the video. As for the source of the infection, I prefer to think of it as a hybridization of an organic biological pathogen and an actual magical curse. Like, the curse attached to the teeth transforms healthy human cells into infected cells that then work like a living pathogen. Assuming it’s all biological and scientific, you have to make a lot of weird assumptions and line up a lot of coincidences for it to make sense. But I too enjoy overthinking how to credibly explain magic/sci-fi nonsense, so that’s not a critique, just an observation. Love your videos.

Okay, this was definitely an interesting one for sure. An odd take on the classical werewolf trope but done in a way that actually makes you think. I really do appreciate you making all these different videos even if they are not necessarily viral, bacterial, or fungal in nature per say. There are references to this being natural to use going all the way back to the bronze age, it's even mentioned in the Iliad. In fact, some scientists believe that the reason 1/3 of the population has trouble sleeping is because we try to force ourselves to sleep 8 hours consecutively, and there is growing evidence that bi-phasic sleep helps with alertness, memory, and learning.

It is a bit of a stretch, but you could explain the seemingly shared nightmare by saying that the infection in the water source effects brain chemistry in such a manner that it renders its sufferers highly suggestable. Such things are not entirely unheard of with pathological microbes, viruses and fungi able to modify behaviour in various species. At that point, the curse uttered by the Romani wise woman could act like a meme (in the scientific meaning of that word) - a notion that replicates itself through word of mouth of the infected, and so suggestible, townspeople. The idea of the curse that effects dreams spreads alongside the infection, and at some point someone who was present at the massacre has a nightmare about those events that is particularly vivid, fixating especially on the gruesome fate of the mutilated man and the wise woman along with the strangeness of the unusual silver teeth. They talk about this dream with friends, and it is so striking that word of it begins to spread, and people not directly involved in the events overhear such conversations, even if subconsciously, and it starts to effect their own dreams due to their highly suggestable state, creating the illusion that everyone is having the same dream, a situation worsened by the highly superstitious culture of a community where advanced education is rare and scientific explanations probably would not be readily forthcoming or taken especially seriously, as evidenced by the attitude toward pathology as a scientific discipline. Indeed, even without an infection increasing everyone's level of suggestibility, such a scenario could still play out. It is not as though there aren't historical examples of mass hysteria resulting in shared delusions with catastrophic outcomes, as the events in Salem and the other historical witch hunts in the early US and throughout Europe amply demonstrate. Indeed, just a few years ago rural people in some parts of mittel-Europe were caught desecrating graves in the earnest belief that they were protecting themselves from vampires by cutting out the hearts and striking off the heads of the recently deceased. Add in the often imperfect and fragmentary memory one has of one's dreams after one wakes - and the likelihood that people would pay more attention to broad brushstroke similarities in their dreams than they would to any differences - and the way in which a belief in a supernaturally shared dream could spread becomes clear, especially in an age long before any modern scientific understanding of the neurochemistry and neurophysiology behind dreaming was discovered and dreams were often ascribed prophetic and other supernatural attributes in uncounted folk traditions.

Haven't seen this film but I love your videos! I really love the originality of the creatures in this film with the monstrous meatsuit covering the original human form. I wonder if they took inspiration from the really old animal transformation myths of antiquity that would go onto to become the werewolf myths, where the person would take the skin of the animal (wolf, seals, swans etc) to become an embodiment and made it literal. as someone who is romani (you got the right pronunciation too! roh mah nee.) , it's good that apart from the initial usage of the word gypsy, you use the word romani for most of the video! for those who dont know, the word gypsy is outdated and many of us prefer to not use it (if a person uses it who is romani that is their choice to reclaim), and it is often considered derogatory! again thank you to roanoke for using the corrent terminology

Thinking of a Doctor Who episode, the mothers dna was on the silver bullet, so maybe the combination of the silver being a cyanotoxin, it getting lodged and not dealing enough damage to kill mixed with the mothers dna partially matching her sons was the perfect mixture to cause a curing effect.

I don't think "it's a curse" alone is lame. If the story has supernatural elements that doesn't remove natural processes from the equation. If there's magic, it would be interacting with non-magical matter, yes? I could see a curse that also has a bacterial component. Magic runes on the surfaces of cells or however you want to justify it, or a spirit acting as a directing mind for a disease.
