what i love about ghibli films is they're basically feelings/sensations animated. hair fluffing up and rising when energies are high. eyes sparkling in wonder. tears so big they flood over your cheeks cuz that's how it FEELS when you cry. even the mother's driving feels like an exaggeration; driving up winding hills would make my stomach swoop when i was little. and don't even get me started on the food, looking so perfect and welcoming because that's what a good meal is.

Fujimoto is really not that bad. He wants to protect the ocean because his wife is the goddess of nature, the humans are slowly killing what his wife represents. And apart from taking care of the ocean he has to protect his daughters all alone and he is obviously scared of ponyo being in a world she doesn't understand sorounded by what he thinks are monsters+ her being young and inocent... That little boat is a real type of toy boat called a 'pop boat'. Sosuke knows how it works because he plays with it all the time, and children are a lot more perceptive than they get credit for. Normally you use the little toggle to set the rudder so as it goes it putters about in circles in the direction you choose when you put it in the water. So Sosuke knows lighting the candle makes it go, and he knows that turning the rudder controls what direction it goes. He knows how to light a match because he's watched his mom do it so many times so he could play with it. By simply playing monkey-see, he's learned the basics of boating with the pop boat, even at a very young age.

This movie is SO nostalgic for me. I was 5 when this came out, and I still remember seeing commercials for it on TV and thinking it looked so weird but cool. I hadn't seen any Studio Ghibli movies up to that point. I made my mom rent the movie for me, and I loved it. I still love it! It's the only Studio Ghibli movie that I watched as a kid, so I guess Ponyo for me is what Totoro and Spirited Away is for many people. I have seen a lot of other Studio Ghibli movies now, but I didn't watch most of them until I was around 12 so they just don't have the same impact for me that Ponyo does. Ponyo was actually based off of a yokai, which I forgot the name of but I know it started with a, that is essentially a Japanese mermaid. It shows up to either give good luck, or warn people of a natural disaster or an epidemic. Having a picture or drawing of it in your home is supposed to help protect from said disasters, which is probably why the old women were saved and protected so quickly, since Sousuke gave them origami ponyos. They look like part fish part human and part chichen, specifically chicken feet❤

Hayao Miyazaki was inspired by The Litte Mermaid (both the original Hans Christian Andersen fiary tale and the Disney movie) for Ponyo (full title Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea) and shows. Not only have the same premise (Ponyo and Ariel are beings of the sea, fish and mermaid respectively, they fall in love with a human and becomes human themselves to be with their loved ones) but Fujimoto is very similiar to King Triton being an overprotective father that hates humans for overfishing and polluting the sea, not to mention he doesn't approve of her daughter's love for a human. Both Ponyo and Ariel have red hair, Sosuke and Prince Eric have black hair and lives by the sea, Ariel and Ponyo becomes human through magic (Ponyo by her dad's potions while Ariel through Ursula's magic spell), both heriones stay at their lovers' place, Ariel and Ponyo turns back into mermaid and fish but becomes humans again at the end. Ponyo being quite for the first part of the movie could be a reference to that Ariel loses her ability to speak when she becomes a human and Sosuke saving Ponyo at the start could be a reference to Ariel saving Eric from drowning. Also the threat of Ponyo turning into sea foam if Sosuke didn't love Ponyo for who is, is something that sadly happens at the original H C Andersen tale, when the mermaid didn't get the prince to fall in love with her after she becomes human (though the mermaid is reborn as an air spirit). The music piece for when Ponyo first becomes human and looks for Sosuke and later follows him and Lisa, sounds a lot like Richard Wagner's The Ride of the Valkyries from the Opera The Ring of the Nibelung, in which Brunhilde (which is Ponyo's birth name) falls in love with mortal man Siegfried (similiar again to Ponyo and Sosuke).

Unfortunately English doesn't have distinct words for platonic/spiritual love and romantic love. Because they are opposites. The spiritual one means to identify with someone thus its altruistic, while the romantic one means to want someones as you mate, thus its ego-centric (selfish). You can feel both for a person, but while the romantic one doesn't need much to happen (since all living beings want to live and reproduce), not everyone is capable of the spiritual/platonic one.
@GuukanKitsune2 жыл бұрын

"while romantic one doesn't need much to happen(since all living beings want to live and reproduce)" do aromantic and asexual people just not exist to you...?
@ubuntuposix Жыл бұрын
@@phoenix_Talaria Are you asexual? Cause I never met one in my life. I have some gay friends but they are the opposite, basically hyper-sexual. In any case, if someone is asexual (they say there could be a 1% of population) then I argue they don't feel romantic love. If they do, they're not asexual. I am more spiritual and for my ex girlfriend I felt a powerful platonic love and had hard trouble being romantic / sexual. I'd wanted to say that it depends on the partener - some trigger in you spiritual love some don't. But, I'd rather say that whenever you're in a spiritual state you are never attracted/romantic. That said, I argue such low-level instincts (sex, pleasure of eating food, etc) are the "fuel" of life, so a person which doesn't enjoy them is sort of depressed and likely not caring much about his/her life (doesn't care much about staying alive).
@puppiekit7 ай бұрын
@@ubuntuposix Us an asexual I 100% feel romantic love. I just don't have the desire for sex. Lmfaooo literally the most insane comment I've ever read. Gay people can also be asexual btw and I know MANY of them. Even biologically speaking I don't understand why not having the desire for sex is so crazy to comprehend, if every human on planet earth wanted to fuck and pop out babies 24/7 we would overpopulate ourselves to death. Not everybody should have/want kids for the sake of balance. It's natural
