As you say, it's not just about the beer quality. A bad beertender, a bad care can completely spoil good beer. There is a czech saying (not sure I translated it well enough): The brewer brews the beer, but the beertender makes it whole.

...my late brother, Tim & I visited Prague in 1994...gorgeous city...excellent pivo!!! BTW in German gasthauses there is always a 'Stammtisch' for the regulars...the old guys who played what looked like a German version of the typical/traditional GI game, Spades, which they played loudly - banging their knuckles on the table when they made book...I was surprised that none of them ever got injuries at that game...
@davidvanin86302 жыл бұрын
This is "Mariáš", a typical pub card game. Although it looks like a simple game, it has surprisingly complex rules. They can be found on the Internet, and there is even Mariaš available for download as an application. If you have never played it, it will take you quite a while to understand it. But it is best learned from someone who has played it for a long time. I learned it from my older brother. Today, however, it is more of a game for older generations, and it is quite rare to see anyone playing it. Today, younger people tend to look at their phones or tablets.

@@davidvanin8630 YUP!!! That's it!!! used to marvel at the old timers in the gasthaus how they slammed their hands into the table without breaking their knuckles...those guys were probably my age now (72) at the time I saw them in 1971 -1974....loved those playing cards - the game is probably similar to the 'spades' we played in our day...
@davidvanin86302 жыл бұрын
@@mohammedcohen Mariáš was probably originally from Germany (we have a connected history for several centuries), but over time it changed, unique elements were added. And you are right. He also adopted certain features from the game "Spades". All point card games ( Spades / Geigel / Mariáš ) have a similar playing style. But each one is a little different :-)

@ Budweiser Crew Is Mr. Dredge the same gentleman who, as far as the world of Czech beer is concerned, finds nothing objectionable in serving two masters ? I could bet that I saw him in a video uploaded on the Pilsener Urquell brewery`s channel, preparing one of the Czech`s pub culture`s most beloved snack foods, the pickled and marinated "Czech camembert" also known as *Hermelin* .
@BudweiserBudvar Жыл бұрын
Mark Dredge is a fantastic beer writer and broadcaster, he is completely independent and doesn't serve anyone. It was a privilege to have him involved. We hope you enjoyed the film.

...In America it's marketed as 'Czechvar' due to trademark issues...
@davidvanin86302 жыл бұрын
So the trademark has its meaning. Beer has been brewed here (I'm from the Czech Republic) for at least 900 years. It is a great tradition and a piece of our history. It's the same as if, for example, they brew Maple Syrup in Vietnam and pass it off as authentically Canadian. Hence the trademark.

I dislike Czech beer profusely, I am much more an aficionado of German Hefeweizens, Rauchbiers and Doppelbocks. However I always return to this one restaurant in Praha and the Budvar they serve is so watery fresh and palatable, goes down like the smoothest of milks straight from the tit, beautiful beer. A canned version is NOT the same thing as from the čap, but in case of Budvar, it's pretty darn close.
