I'm not usually a conspiracy theorist, however the book the "The Davinci Code" is originally based on, "The Holy Blood and The Holy Grail" is a fascinating read.

But also proven to be completely bogus. Not saying it was the authors fault, but if he believed what he wrote then he fell prey to one of the greatest cons in history. He based his book on the historical findings of Peirre Planard who in 1961 who claimed he discovered the evidence of the ancient and secret organization The Priory of Scion of which he, Plantard was a descendent of the Jesus/Mary Magdeline bloodline. Plantard pulled off one of the greatest amd intricate hoax in history. He had historical documents forged, planted them throughout Europe in libraries in churches that have been around since the middle ages and completely fabricated and created the Priory of Scion including it prestigious members like De Vinci. The Priory of Scion never existed. In 1989 Plantard admitted to the hoax when his house was searched by French law enforcement, related to a different con game he was running, and turned up a hoard of false documents, including some proclaiming Plantard the true king of France. Plantard admitted under oath he had fabricated everything, including the Priory of Sion. Plantard then in a BBC interview said everything in the book Holy Blood, Holy Grail was fiction.

If Mary Magdalen had a kid, who had kids who had kids etc, every person of European decent, and many people of African, Asian, and Middle Eastern ancestry would be a direct decendant of Jesus. In fact, for Europe, you only have to go back to the year 1000, for every person alive at the time, to be a direct ancestor of every person of European ancestry alive today.

Paul Bettany's character is what they call a flagellant. Some people show their devotion to God by whipping themselves. It's a reference to how Christ was flagellated before he was crucified and the practice has been around for about 1,000 years if not more. The whip is uses is called a discipline. This movie is actually quite nice. It has two sequels which also have Tom Hanks' character in it: Angels & Demons and Inferno. However, all of these movies are based on books and the book order is a bit different as Angels & Demons is the first novel and The Da Vinci Code the 2nd. The 3rd book is called The Lost Symbol and Inferno is the fourth book in this series, with Origin being the 5th and so far last book in the Robert Langdon series. So if you want to read the books too then that's the order. There are also two other standalone novels by Dan Brown Digital Fortress and Deception Point. They are not connected to the Robert Langdon series but one of the Robert Langdon books has an easter egg in it.

I read this book when a friend forced it to me (I had a three months old kid, so working full time, helping my wife with the baby was not the best time to read an almost 700 pages novel), and I'm glad he did. I loved the book. While I was reading the book I was thinking it would be impossible to make it into a movie. I was thinking "I am on page 490 of a story that started at night and it is not dawn yet, how could they put so many things into a movie? So, when I saw they made it into a movie I was expecting already to cut out a lot, but I liked the movie, and I liked it a lot. They managed to keep the essence, the visuals they add like when they are presenting the Last Supper or when Langdon starts thinking into the puzzle help the audience understand, I think they did a great job, and the only thing I would change, I would add some digitalization of a knight armor and sword when Langdon kneels in front of the area where he realized the sarcophagus is kept, to emphasize his worthiness of the quest for the Holy Grail. Other than that, I think it was a great adaptation.

There were boycotts called for the movie in some Catholic circles, a few bishops spoke out against it and the The film was rated as "morally offensive" by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishop. But there were also catholic archbishops embraceed the movie and saw it as a way to open dialog with people about their beliefs. I, as a Christian- not catholic- loved the book and was recommended to me by my pastor of my church, who is a Dan Brown fan. But there were some people on my church who thought it sacrilegious At least my pastor understood it to be a work of fiction and was for entertainment.

I hope you watch "Angels & Demons" after this. It wasn't as good as this movie (or as good as the book version), but it was still very entertaining. It has a lot of mystery/treasure hunting like this, but it deals with a ton of art, sculptures, etc in Italy. If you liked this I think you'll really enjoy watching that. I wasn't as big of a fan of "Inferno" because I thought the plot was a bit odd, but it still wasn't terrible either.

"... religious role doesn't it mean you can't kill?" No. The scene where he's hurting himself is an insane ritual that some of the most fundamental sects of Christianity inflict on themselves. He's punishing himself for future sins. Building credit. So he can sin, knowing he's already paid the penance for it. It was never commonly done, but when it was, these people would build credit in advance so their superiors could use them to assassinate inconvenient people. The amount of suffering they would have to inflict on themselves to pay for a murder changed based on how cruel their superiors were and how masochistic the murderer was. The more I learn about history, the more I'm thankful that I'm living in a peaceful country like Australia in a period of time where we have all our modern conveniences and technology.

This was actually based on what was an extremely popular book back in the early 2000s. My mother wouldn't shut up about it. I waited for the film. After watching the film though I was left feeling that it probably read better than it played on screen. There was so much dialogue, so much explanation required that it kind of killed it for me as a cinematic experience.

Ian McKellen's character, the one who knows everything, is named "Leigh Teabing." That's a tribute to two authors who wrote one book, "Holy Blood, Holy Grail." One author was Richard Leigh, while the other was Michael Baigent, and Teabing, T-E-A-B-I-N-G, is an anagram of Baigent, B-A-I-G-E-N-T. I do like how some of the clues go, like the reference to Pope not being to an actual Pope but to the poet named Alexander Pope. The albino monk, Silas, went on to play Vision in the movie Avengers: Age of Ultron. There's another movie about a woman descended from Christ, it's called Dogma, but it's a comedy, it's very wacky and crazy, I like it, but I recommend it cautiously. I do enjoy the music for this. Thanks, Dasha!

21:15 when flying in a private plane you can change your course easy. Depending id you are flying VFR or with ATC and flying IFR. Either eay even with ATC you can just tell them you are diverting. Just need to let them know you are changing course and get the OK from them for that change making sure that you are not heading into another flight path. Airlines really cannot as they fly routes, much like a bus or a train. They can divert, but thay is usually for emergencies and the airline company authorizes it and the fuel is available as they carry fuel based on their destination. A plane may not be "topped off" with fuel like you do with a car, especially if its a local flight. Really long distance flights like NY to CA would be a more full tank.

Great book. Great movie. Definitely not real, but definitely creative and engaging. Clearly written by someone with moderate education/interest in theology and Christian history, but not enough to get beyond the typical anti-establishment phase common with the moderately educated in all fields. You learn enough to exploit the field (and rebel against it), like a teenager, then you learn enough to realize its wisdom and need (and all the real reasons for why things happened the way they did). Sadly, colleges today are run by the moderately educated (if that) and few, if any, of the truly educated.

"I like how it has perfect symmetry." Including the two chalices - the inverted V's - pointing at each other at the Louvre under which she lay. Perfect symmetry. And the standing chalice next to it in the courtyard, as if to mark the location. Perfection.

In fiction: it means that the Chinese architect IM Pei (the one who built the pyramid) is also a member of the Priory of Sion.

6:08 "I remember, we were learning about Fibonacci in _math_ class, in _school._ In _high_ school. But... that's all I remember. Just the name." 😳 Huh. So they actually had a way to teach him to you in such a way that you remember the _most insignificant part_ about this scholar. You don't remember the _cool_ stuff. See, Fibonacci was a mathematician. He came up with this sequence of numbers in which every _two_ sequential numbers adds up to the one right _after_ them. So consider how it starts. 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13... The first digit (1) and the second (1) add up to the _third (2)._ The second (1) and the third (2) add up to the _fourth (3)._ The third (2) and the fourth (3) add up to the _fifth (5)._ See how this works out? _This_ is the sequence Dr. Langdon is seeing and using.

Opus Dei is Catholic, basically a group within western Catholicism. I have a family member who is Opus Dei, they aren't all like Paul Bettany in this movie.
