Pholcids which are a true spider genus and not what Jack is describing here are also known as Daddy Long legs in many parts of the world. Also quite harmless, they can bite humans but the impact is not overly noticable. Envenomation is about as bad as a typical mosquito bite.

I think that's a Harvestmen. Yes still related to spiders. If it had a longer skinny body and easy to see 2 segments with long legs and makes webs it's a cellar spider. If it has long legs looks similar but can fly its a cranefly and not related to spiders. All of them are referred to as daddy longlegs. At least where i live

Your Daddy Long Legs are obviously different from our Daddy Long Legs here in Australia. Ours do have fangs,are actually more venomous than a Red Back spider(think Black Widow)and are voracious predators. I have a dozen or so in a big web in my bedroom to keep the flys and mosquito(and other spiders)population down. They are still totally harmless to humans though.

That’s actually a myth that they are more toxic than red backs. They are Pholcid spiders which do not have dangerously toxic venom. 👍

Redback spider envenomation has killed 13 people I think. Black widow envenomation has killed less than 1 person, I mean sure, a really good dose of lactrotoxins and it potentially could be fatal but it’s more likely, if you did indeed get a good envenomation, that you would wish you were dead. Mild envenomation is semi common and you might feel pretty awful for a day but most people are fine. The venoms of severe black widow spider bites can be treated with Redback spider anti venom. Likewise with some of the steatoda(false widow) species bites, a closely related genus in the family of therid spiders who’s venom also contains various latrotoxins. The Daddy Long legs spider venom is laughably weak to vertebrates but their fangs can penetrate our skin just fine, mozzie bite is probably similarly painful.

The same common name applies to a few different animals, what you’re describing sounds like a crane fly. They are also called daddy long legs in some areas. In the south we call those mosquito hawks although they’re completely harmless and don’t really feed on anything in their adult stage
