"Stay" came into Pidgin from Portuguese "Estar", meaning "To Be" (Temporarily, as in Condition or Location). I stay Mainland. I stay sick (one cold). I stay in my house. I stay typing one comment on KZbin. I still stay laughing from da video!

In Spanish, “estar” is the verb ‘to be’ (for temporary situations, for how you’re feeling right now, or your location.

An example of "stay" in local conversation: "He came foa come foa go to stay, den he when go foa stay an' den when come for go." Mahalos, Andy!
@kepaloha8 жыл бұрын
That was probably the best example of how the word "Stay" is used. Now I can have my wife and kids watch and it should make sense to them. Some times I tend to revert back to pidgin and they get lost talking to me. LOL "Oh dad, you know, you stay lolo"

For those who still don't quite understand 5:35-6:23, I've transcribed and translated it. Regular text is my transcription, italic will have a little more detail on some of the content; which, I must stress, is my view point on some of the areas of speech that is displayed here. I have no professional/academia accredited competency. Its just what I hear, as someone who grew up speaking pidgin. *Howzit dis is Kalandria* Hi, this is Kalandria _Hello/Hi/How are you? This is Kalandria_ *Oh, eh howzit, uh eh wea u stay?* Oh, hi, where are you located? _Oh(filler word), eh (filler), uh (filler) eh (trying to grab listeners attention) wea you stay?(where are you/where are you located?)_ *Oh wea on Ala Moana dis is Wailana Coffee Shop* This is Wailana Coffee Shop, we're located on Ala Moana _Oh wea(we’re) on Ala Moana, dis is Wailana Coffee Shop_ *You know across da street from da Hilton wea get da giant statues, look like big Kim Tellarese lamps* Its across the street from (instead of giving an exact address, Kalandria uses landmarkings to give location) _You know(used to verify that listener has prior knowledge) across da street from da Hilton wea get(“get” is used in substitution of “there are”) da giant statues, (“that” is cut from preceding “look” which results in the dropping of the “S” proceeding “look”) look like big Kim Tellarese lamps (using landmarks to give location)_ *Oh ya ya I know where is that* Oh, yeah, I know where that is _(“I know where is that” is grammatically correct in pidigin because some words, depending on content, flips them around)_ *Why? You stay coming?* Are you on your way here? _Why?(asking why, in front of a statement, has no real meaning. Its usually a filler word that proceeds said statement) You stay coming?_ *Oh ya ya I stay coming, but, you know, tell those buggahs uh no stay go, k?* Yes, I am. Tell those people to stay there, ok? _Oh(filler) ya ya (repetition used for emphasis) I (usually, when referring to first person, the “M” is dropped from ‘I’m”) stay coming, but, you know (in this case, “you know” is used as a request from Kalandria) tell those buggahs(informal way to acknowledge a group) uh(filler) no stay go, k?_ *What? You going be fast kine? Or you gone take long time?* Will you get here quickly? Or will it take some time? _What?(this can sometimes be used as “huh?” but in this case its in the form of letting the listener know that elucidation is required, based on proceeding content) You going be fast kine? Or you gone(“gone” replaces “going”) take long time?_ *Oh uh I go make fast kine. I right at Diamond head, I stay* I'm by Diamond head, so I'm close by. _Oh(filler) uh(filler) I (drops the “M” in I’m) go make fast kine( to make this sentence easier to digest, you could think of it like “I’m going [to] make fast kine’, in other words “I’m gonna make it quick”)_ *Oh, ok. You stay diamond head? Ok den only fast den. Ok I tell 'em no stay go cause you stay coming* Oh, yeah, that's pretty close. I'll tell them not to leave _Oh, ok. You stay Diamond Head? Ok den(alright then) only fast den(the use of den, in this case, is filler). Ok, I tell ‘em(them) no stay go cause you stay coming (this part could also, possibly be perceived as “do not go because you are coming”)_ *Ok. uh, mahalo ah, Kalandria* Thank you Kalandria _Ok, uh(filler), mahalo(Hawaiian: to give thanks/gratitude)_ *Ok no problem. Aloha bra* You're welcome *Ok, he when hang up cause he stay pau, ya?* He hung up _Ok, he when(a strange case of filler word; has no real meaning/value) hang up cause he stay pau(pau meaning done/finished being on the phone; which is assumed to be known based on previous content) ya?(a marker to indicate conformation of what has happened)_ *But, what he when say was no stay go cause he stay coming and he gon make da kine fast kine. Ok?* He says he's close by, so don't leave _But, what he when(not a filler, this is used in replacement of saying “but what he did say ___”) was no stay go cause he stay coming and he gon make da kine(ubiquitous term; can be a noun/verb/adjective/filler. In most cases, its highly content reliant) fast kine(sometimes when “kine” proceeds a word, it can be used as emphasis of the preceding verb) Ok?_ *So, no stay go ah?!* (emphasizing not leaving)

My fada is from Honolulu and my family still stay there, so I pick up a little pidgin when I was a kid without knowing. Sometimes when I hear my dad on the phone and he talk stories with his friends, I often hear him ask: "Where you stay?" which translates in my head: "What you doing" or "Where you at?" "Stay coming" within context sounds like "Still coming" but whateva.

"Stay" was one of the harder concepts/words I came across when i first came to Hawaii. I actually had to ask someone to explain what my coworker (at the time) meant by "you go stay or you stay go?" That question broke my brain because, I didn't understand how it was an OR question with just switching the order of stay & go.

Not sure about that and how "estar" can be related to stay..I think stay is derived from the English word stay. Pidgin just uses it differently.
@Jeezalouisa8 жыл бұрын
+Alfred Pilialoha I don't know Portuguese but if it's close to Spanish "estoy" then it makes perfect sense: "estoy veniendo/coming" turns into "I stay coming". :)

Aloha Andy, can you reconsider continuing your daily pidgin show. I am a new to your channel.
@AndyBumataiShow5 жыл бұрын
I mentioned this many times in a number of replies... The reason I'm not doing it any more is, it takes all my time, I was doing it daily, and there's no money in it. Yeah, there's a little from KZbin but not enough to make a living. So... I'm now doing my TV show here in Hawai‘i called Toolin' Around a show that I can sell sponsorship around. I miss the Daily Pidgin too but, again, I just can't afford to do it and I don't want to do Patrreon and those sorts of thing. I'm just not good at that stuff. Sorry, Crystal and thanks for asking.

Andy, do you think local comedy had a golden age back in the '80s? I remember my friends came back to California from spending summer vacation with their cousins on Oahu with "Pidgin to Da Max" and local comedy records (e.g. "Tell Faith Yanagi I Love Her"). We listened to Rap Reiplinger, you and others and laughed until it hurt. I'm wondering if you are leading a renaissance or if local comedy or if it has continued unabated for the last 30 years and I haven't been paying attention.

When I was in Hawaii with my wife for our honeymoon, and she dropped into pidgin... I was lost. I'm from the Mainland, Virginia way, and we just don't talk like that. And she didn't either until we were landed at the airport. She spent many years growing up in Hawaii and internalized lots of culture there. Anyway, one of the hardest things to learn was "stay go" and "go stay". She explained that one was to go away and the other was to stay here. It clicked. It was good kine to learn.

(What's happening to you?, What's up with you?, Why are you acting like that?, You're behaving weird!) Still stay! (It's still there!) (It's still here!) (It IS, still!) No stay! 1. (Don't remain here!) Or, 2. (It's NOT here!) 3. (It's NOT like that!) 4. (It's NOT!!) G o o d G r i e f 😂 😄
