Well, the whole realm (or at least its center) was devastated after the dance. Every single one of the 7 kingdoms has lost a great part of its army, even the victorious North. They decided to built it up again. Who could have seperated? House Targaryen still had a few dragons and new ones were to expect. When it was clear they would die out, years have already passed. But from this point on, the Targs where just the royal house and eventually lost their power.

I'd say the two winners were the North & House Tully. For the North, this was the first time they really involved themselves heavily in the politics of the kingdom. They were rather isolated before this. The hermit kingdom of the 7 kingdoms. But this established them as a major political player that could make significant moves outside of their realm. House Tully (and other Riverland lords) were also winners, as this was the first time the Riverlands as a united realm under the Tullies played a major part. This added legitimacy to Riverlands being their own kingdom(an equal to other kingdoms), and not just a vassal state of another kingdom as they always were before the Targs took over the 7 kingdoms. The Riverland small folk however, were definitely not the winners.

The Dance has a very interesting conclusion, simply down to the fact that there is no clear, decisive winner. The Blacks got their bloodline on the throne and killed off the Green line, however the Green claim managed to survive and Rhaenyra's reign was expunged from the records and unacknowledged by the realm

Well done comprehensive breakdown of the DotD Robert. The Dance is truly a disastrous tragedy with insane amounts of carnage. I do tend to sympathize with Team Black but basically most involved are quite terrible with atrocities on all sides , so really i am Team No-one in the end. For me the DotD is essentially a grey horrors of war conflict and GRRM's treatise on such imo. It also highlights the dangers of such ambitions and ruthlessness with weapons of mass destruction at play (dragons in this case). Any victory was Pyrrhic at best ; everyone lost in the end including both sides and the wider realm. The realm took a very long time to recover from the DotD and the Targaryen family essentially never did. Nearly 20 dragons most gone as a result of the Dance and the remaining few mostly died off not long after the conflict. A huge powerful Targ family very much decimated from that point on and were all the more vulnerable ever since. The Targ family was broken to a degree and would never reach such heights again. Including and especially so the understandably very broken and traumatized boy king who emerges from this conflict, who never really recovered. Also , not a coicidence imo we get the most amount of mad and eccentric Targs in the post-dragon era ; with such an intrinsic element ripped away from the family , seemingly an element they were genetically linked with. The DotD was a very grey tragic conflict. And i do hope HotD highlights that above all else ; both sides were and did so much wrong in the end , any victory was Pyrrhic at best and its just a grey horrors of war familial (and beyond) tragedy overall. That should be the main takeaway rather than supporting a given side or trying to decide which faction was more wrong , right or justified etc.

Just two small nitpicks: It was Aemond eluding his uncle and not the other way around. Aemond also left Harrenhall when Cole marched south to join with the southron forces. Daemon and Nettles tried to find and challenge him but he eluded them and kept burning loyalist holds instead. It was only when Daemon sent Nettles away (they got news of Rhaenyras mistrust and her plans to have Nettles killed) that Aemond showed up and accepted the challenge of Daemon. (WHO JUMPED FROM HIS DRAGON TO FRGGIN STAB AEMOND IN THE FACE!!! ... I know you have to cut some details but why that??? 😂) Addam actually "fled" to Tumbleton to fight the Traitors, recruiting loyalists along the way, to proove his loyalty. @matthewterlaga30226 ай бұрын
Wonder if they will stick to this “both sides being equally terrible” thing from the book, cause in season one, it was pretty blatant that they wanted the audience to root for the blacks.
@cardenova6 ай бұрын
Well, theyre technically the main characters so its only natural the show orients the audience with their perspective disproportionately more; House Hightower is not even mentioned in the GOT shows and owes allegiance to House Tyrell. House Targaryen, on the other hand, is still one of the most important houses in GOT, despite on its deathbed, at the start of the GOT show/books. It helps the average viewer understand and follow the lore a bit easier. I don’t think there was a bad/evil dichotomy, though I can understand it seems a bit biased. The last sentence of Episode 1’s ‘prologue’ cited the culprit of the civil war most eloquently as House Targaryen ‘itself’. Ryan is too smart a man to NOT know the basic purpose of this story. His ‘eye for an eye’ scene is proof enough that he does understand that everybody will lose everything by the end. Effectively all the dragons of both factions will be extinct by the end of the war (until Dany reawakens her 3 dragons 150 years later lol). They never truly recover nor do the Seven Kingdoms at large either. It’s an utter catastrophe for House Velaryon, the other last remnant of Old Valyria’s Empire. Even House Hightower suffers gravely considering how powerful they were relative to the rest of the continent, especially just before Aegon’s conquest. Even in the books, Oldtown (the seat of the Hightowers) remains more influentual as a cultural/historical city than Highgarden, but not politically nor financially any longer. Even Casterly Rock & the Redwynes will experience a period of relative stagnation for the following century after the costly sacks and raids from the Ironborn. And at the heart of it all is a family/a small web of close friends that originally loved each other. It will be much more gradual and level-headed than the outburst of vengeance displayed during the War of the 5 Kings during the Baratheons’ succession crisis and ensuing rebellion. I think it’s something like 20-30 years of build-up (over a generation and a half) compared to the 3-5 years the War of the Kings took to unfold and end. In the book it’s still been 4 years and Stannis is still alive (ie- the war is not over yet) so perhaps it will be comparable in the end though in the end, it is clear that the Dance of Dragons was more damaging to the realm. And in the end, their vengeance was their own undoing. Of course, that’s the same message (in theory) during GOT’s war but to a lesser extent. The Lannisters & Ironborn were clearly morally bankrupt while the Starks were presented as at least trying to remain honorable. It was a more just cause, so to speak. So yeah I’d say it’s crucial that Ryan gets these string of catastrophic blowbacks and Pyrrhic victories portrayed effectively and thematically. I personally think he will by the end.
@InimitableAde6 ай бұрын
It's interesting you say that because I never perceived the book as presenting both sides being equally terrible. Book Rhaenyra very quickly becomes completely broken, inept & even worthy of scorn; show Rhaenyra, at least as of season one, is set up to be heroic, capable & a character the audience would be correct in admiring. I just don’t see how the show can reconcile the two & stay true (enough) to the book. Again, I’ve got a lot of criticism for the show, & this is only one point among many that have already occurred.

decimated means 10%

No it doesn't. The colloquial usage of the word obviously doesn't mean that.
@jleisner19746 ай бұрын
@@bad72690 yes, it does. Colloquially IMPLIED to mean the opposite, but the actual definition means 10%. Goes back to the Romans.

A very poor writen book , the idea of presenting it like a history record was crap ,because a history record need exactly what GRRM was never good at : concrete numbers and timline I dont recomand the book to nobody , it has the narative of a wikipedia page , and his core message seems to be made for childrens : War baaad , peace goood , and of course some dick jokes told by Tyrion 2.0 who only childrens will laugh at This book is the image of diyng talent of Martin

You miss the point. History doesn't have concrete numbers or an exact timeline. It has the narratives as recorded by people who decide that their narrative will be considered the exact truth and the records and observations of those who were there will be discounted because they made dick jokes.

And then team green lost when Aegon II was poisoned. Technically the blacks did win. Rhaenyra’s son was put on the throne.
