11:08 The skull and yokai (monsters) are a reference to the ukio-e of 歌川国芳 (Utagawa Kuniyoshi), a 19th century artist whose style is often associated with modern manga.
@swampjawn3 күн бұрын
Woah cool, I guess I missed that one!
@kazuhisanakatani12093 күн бұрын
@@swampjawn On second thought, the monster with the big nose on the right looks more like an oni from 地獄草紙 (Hell Scroll), a 12th century illustrated scroll by an unknown artist. The oni just below the skull is also vaguely familiar, but I can't pinpoint the source. Anyway, it's a traditional Japanese aesthetic that 国芳 (Kuniyoshi) himself referred to. The point is that Kuniyoshi is a culmination of the pop culture of the Edo period (1603-1868), whose style has a lot of influence on modern manga and anime.

I'd like to think the silhoette of Momo doing a roundhouse kick on a blue background is referencing Spike Spiegel doing a similar high kick to a blue background as well, that intro also has a pop art style and both unapologetically lean into the muscial influence for their animation, but if it's a coincidence it's still a great opening.

I want to do artwork of both examples here. The hyper realistic and the highly expressionistic style. One is so beautiful and serene, the other is so vibrant and exciting. I love anime that do either of these things, they inspire me to want to keep practicing and keep learning. Plus they are just fun to watch. This show does both while also incorporating action, romance, the occult and it has flawed, interesting characters that you want to root for and watch grow. The story is wacky and yet still somehow takes itself seriously at the right times, it's overall a very interesting show.

There's only twelve episodes and based on the pacing of the Manga, his story will likely be cut in half for a cliffhanger in the last episode.
