Thanks, Jim - as always VERY helpful. I had the multiple sensitivities that were diagnosed as ME/CFS, Fibromyalgia, IBS, IC, chemical sensitivity, etc. I was told they were all "incurable" - which of course ramped up the fear reaction. How lovely to discover they are ALL capable of healing! I've read Alan Gordon's and Stephen Porges's books fascinated by the information. But I love your videos and doing somatic tracking regularly with the help of KZbin videos. Bit by bit, I am healing. Newer symptoms are leaving first: I had some Long Covid symptoms that are now gone, a "runner's knee" that didn't heal, and moved from knee to knee that stopped me from doing multiple activities that I now do joyously - even when it hurts - because I KNOW it's the brain creating the sensations. I am jumping, running, and dancing HARD again - which is a delight! Best of all, once I recognized the food sensitivities and "histamine" and "acid reflux" symptoms were reactions to stress and trauma and NOT to foods - I was able to put back multiple foods I'd done without for a couple of years. It is BLISS to have my favourite foods back again with NO increase in symptoms! So thanks for all you do, Jim - I am so grateful for these videos!

@@Dandelionsandbutterflies Getting OFF benzos and 4 other equally useless medications. You can't heal what you can't feel and facing the trauma and grief that led to the symptoms helped me hugely. I journaled, wrote stories, and danced out my emotions rather than sedating or stuffing them. Regular meditations helped. I love Chi Gong, a gently moving form of meditation, guided visualizations. Now somatic tracking is a new favourite as it teaches what I knew intuitively - that we need to befriend our challenging emotions and face our pasts - but in new healthy ways that don't trigger you. Nature too is a wondrous healer. I love to listen to birdsong, take long walks on the beach, and see what animals greet me. Lots of grounding exercises too were helpful. Find what works for YOU! But I wish I'd known about somatic mind/body medicine decades ago - but I'm SO glad I've discovered it now and hope to surpass my 80% healing and recover fully. Knowing that CFS/ME, Long Covid, fibromyalgia are NOT lifelong afflictions but created by the brain that can be healed is SO empowering. So many people have recovered fully. Bit by bit, I'm fine-turning the last issues and making changes. But I got my life back! You can too, and you're in the right place to begin.

@@lindapelle8738 You're on a great site right here! Jim is a fine teacher, and his videos are excellent. I also like Tanner Murtagh who teaches polyvagal theory well, Dr. Yonit Arthur for pain and anxiety, Raelan Agle for success stories to inspire you. I love Deb Dana's book, Anchoring. Her exercises are VERY helpful. For trauma - which is behind most symptoms - I highly recommend Peter Levine's trauma books and videos. James Gordon's book, The Transformation: Discovering Wholeness & Healing After Trauma was also transformational. I got them all out of the library! I hear you about being low income - I did most of my healing intuitively, listening to my own mind and body, as I was on a senior's budget myself. I wish you complete recovery! I had to learn that the 5 illnesses doctors labelled "incurable" were NOT lifelong, but caused by my brain - and there are such wondrous ways to rewire your brain and calm your nervous system. Wishing you the very best of luck! If you're already experienced reductions in symptoms and sensations - you're on your way home to a healthy new you! Warm wishes, Linda

I’ve known this for many years but was unable to explain it with the eloquence you do Thank you for making the actual fight or flight response more understandable and how the sensations remain because we are telling our brain we are not safe. In effect we are sabotaging our healing, because we are stuck in the belief that we have a condition and the brains response is to keep us feeling that we have the condition. The only way to break out is to be brave. Become a warrior- telling the brain that this is a perceived habitual response and that repeatedly acknowledging this, will calm the nervous system enough to allow for the brain to reset prior to the time before the condition.

But just talking to the brain that there is no threat doesn't work. The brain does not believe that you are actually safe even if we talk many times to it. I think the brain learns safety gradually through our life experiences. I agree with you that the symptoms are all caused by brain in survival mode.
@Eric-tj3tg
@Eric-tj3tg 5 ай бұрын
I agree. This sounds like largely a top-down approach, like CBT, when, especially with early Trauma (attachment, etc.), a bottom-up approach seems necessary on some level. It can't hurt to be conscious of the thoughts surrounding the experience, but "the issues are in the tissues", Rolfing's reported utility (Van Der Kolk , author of "The Body Keeps the Score", said it greatly impacted his HRV, a measure of one's nervous system's efficacy in moving back to Para vs Sympathetic Nervous System, the uses of Trauma Release Exercises, etc. seem somewhat at odds with this message.
@balum8725

@@Eric-tj3tg I don't understand why people seperate or overlook the role of brain when talking about body based treatments. It doesn't make sense to me when people say that trauma is stored in the tissues , bones etc... It is the brain that finally switches off the survival mode through body based exercises. Somatic exercises causes the rewiring of the brain through nueroplasticity. As said in the video the symptoms are caused by the brain and for the brain to understand that it is safe, we need body based exercises.This is just my understanding, btw I am not a qualified therapist.

@@balum8725 I share your understanding. Likely, considering we are one organism, the "loop" between mind/body will be recognized. Mind-body split leads to slow and awkward reductionism which cannot tell the full story.

True. Even w/dx issues incl fractures or infections our brain, gut, hormones etc effect rxn/ response to it. Seems ancient healers and teachers understood this. We became focused on material ignoring the non or separating it. Maybe re-integrating them would help. Heart neurons can act independent of brain. : )

Great message. Complicated a bit by Polyvagal Theory (Dr. Bruce Perry), which indicates that the Vagal Nerve which permeates the entirety if the body, provides more info to the brain than vice versa. Also the Microbiome seems to send more than received by the brain. Add to this, the complex systemic effects of Psychiatric Medications, Implicit Trauma, and defenses (Wilber, "any time a psychological defense is engaged, there will be a bodily parallel simultaneously employed). As a Somatic Therapist, might you provide your thoughts?
@thepainpt
@thepainpt 5 ай бұрын
Yes all these u mention- it is a two way street body-brain. It’s all interconnected. The main message here is that everyone blames the body(physical) when many chronic symptoms are more driven by changes in the central nervous system which relates to psychosocial and sensitization. You can definitely use the body as a way to communicate safety to the brain if you are informed about the understanding here

Perhaps "The Danger or Threat Exists in your Mind, not in your body" is closer, but it's actually in the body-mind, and here's where our dichotomous thinking (and use of language) creates much confusion, even as our understanding is seemingly improving.

The problem is due to WebMD and the subsequent evolution of one line health information and the new found idea that we should all diagnose ourselves. It’s not doctors who are driving this, it’s patients online who are researching their chest pain and thinking it’s heart. And then when the tests are negative (and of course for a 25yo it’s negative) the SOB and palpitations come, and then the POTS, and then the pain, and then the fatigue. The amount of online fear mongering and misinformation is massive. Almost everyone who is severely sick has been down an internet rabbit hole of quackery and “functional medicine” hypothesis, and Facebook groups and blog posts. The neuro circuit is ancient. But do not pull *unless your life is threatened.* But who told you your life is threatened? Not your doctor. Not your tests. Not your labs. You. You told yourself. That triggered the shutdown. There was a time not so long ago when a negative test was reassuring, now modern day humans think it means they have an even worse, rare, mystery disease. We are all unique and special, and many have the badges and diagnoses to prove it; medical narcissism.

Yes, it can overtime sometimes quickly. Sometimes it takes time to get the communication going, but this is exactly what happens when people receive good news from the doctor when they’re stressing about a symptom and the symptom goes away soon after. that information went into the brain and had a communication effect. A lot of times though you will let your brain know how you feel about it and you’re standing up to it in a sense and waiting for it to calm down so it doesn’t always happen right away.
