Dearest Ajahn Brahm, I just recovered from Covid (in Singapore) and was feeling "faint of heart". I read the chapter on "Suffering and letting go" in your book "Opening the door of your Heart" which has been with me since day 1. It still helped to uplift me time and again over the years. I can't thank you enough for your teachings and compassion.

I agree that fear is very dangerous and I am thankful for this encouraging talk. BUT, I want to explain why people are afraid. For one I do not think people can choose to be afraid or not be afraid. But why people are afraid is because some have already experienced pain whether it is physical or emotional and this causes two types of fear. One is fear of experiencing pain again by self. And two, fear for other people who may experience the same pain. I think in fact that that is why Buddhists value the idea of letting go of attachment, whether it is to objects, or to abstract concepts like love. It is because they also quite literally fear the desire that may come from this. So Buddhists are also afraid. I also personally have very strong fears which, no matter how much I try I cannot stop. I had cancer when I was at age of 25 in 2007. It was supposed to be an easy to treat cancer at first. But eventually I needed to get two bone marrow transplants. I was not sure at one point whether I was going to make it. I was afraid that my parents would not be able to live after that and who would take care of them. I am the only child. I assure you. No matter what views you may have about fear. No matter how many horror movies you may have seen. The idea that you may quite literally die and you are not able to do anything about it with that knowledge is nothing you can prepare for. You cannot choose to just not be afraid especially when you know that you are needed and that others lives may depend on it.

@@salrc8352 Ajahn Brahm explained it. If you’re going through something bad, you have to make use of it, learn from it and turn it into something that will give you good results in the future. It’s explained in his book Opening the Door of your heart. It’s an amazing book. And also you should remember that whatever you’re going through, it’s impermanent, so don’t have craving or aversion towards it.

A great talk on fear however l question the generalization that the monks didn't get Covid because they were not afraid. Many covid and mask deniers got the illness. Perhaps meditation also helped the monks stay healthy.? Your talk was very helpful but please take care with sweeping statements.

I do not see the feeling of fear as a negative thing, but as a positive thing, that protects us from what might happen, and the feeling of fear is required in our daily lives, as long as it is a moderate and justified fear.

35:30 ⁉️ 😮😔🤦🏽♂️⛔ [OPEN MESSAGE] Dear Ajahn I trust you are well, content and peaceful 🙏🏽 Bhante I listened very carefully, and many times, and reflected over a few days upon all what you expressed re. FORGIVENESS BEING GIVEN 1 MORE TIME. So this (for example) would even include one to keep forgiving their domestic abuser partner/father/son or daughter who has not just once or even a few times, but MANY times committed evil brutal terrible torturous things to them?.. This is of course a rhetorical question as it is fully commensurate with your statement/teaching etc. Ajahn, respectfully.. although you did seemingly try to do some damage limitation/back tracking so to speak re. said teaching ' to always forgive someone 1 more time' ...and gave one of your usual examples of a story with a happy ending.. Humbly Ajahn.. I see it is your way to to make jokes/humour, give anecdotes and stories as you flit from one topic to another.. BUT sir, I respectfully ask you THINK about what you said: "FORGIVE 1 MORE TIME' - And how such a view/action applies to say to those of us who over many years and having many opportunities to change continually and incessantly commit truly heinous, brutal and destructive harm (e.g. rape, murder against defenceless children, partners or parents etc). Yes, I do believe in the virtues and power of forgiveness, but cannot accept your comment//teaching even in spite of having another of your happy (even a tad humorous) ending stories as skilfull or even safe to share to a wide audience in which their are likely to be vulnerable souls - given the wide scope, range of different behaviours (minor to horrific) one might be forgiving another person for 'ONE MORE TIME' as you say. Now, if you had qualified your teaching and not given it as an absolute, and said, in 99% of cases so long as the person isn't incessantly repeating their offences, and their offences are not of a level to be seen as truly brutal, heinous, sadistic, evil or murderous etc. (Example. serious sexual child or spousal abuse etc) then where safe to do so, yes aim to forgive them one more time... Yes Ajahn, I would see that as skillful advice. Thank you Ajahn Metta 🙏🏽 FOR FURTHER CONTEMPLATION: tricycle.org/magazine/forgiveness-not-buddhist/
