In this video, we'll talk about the dangers of kitesurfing and why you should NEVER try it. Kitesurfing is a dangerous sport and can actually be deadly if you're not careful.
Kitesurfing is a great way to have fun but it's not safe for beginners. If you're thinking of trying kitesurfing, be sure to consult with an expert first to make sure it's safe for you. And if you do try it, be sure to wear a safety helmet and take safety precautions!
Do you know the dangers involved in kitesurfing?
It's imperative to understand all the hidden dangers that kitesurfing presents. Without the proper knowledge, some can become very harmful for yourself and others.
The first one is considering learning to kitesurf without any lessons.
Watching experienced kiters ride and jump happily on the water makes it look easy and safe. Don't let this trick you. Stick around to find seven examples of things that can occur.
01 You can get overpowered
02 Sudden wind hull
03 Your quick release system. (equipment failure)
04 Piloting mistakes
05 Strong gust or a sudden wind increase.
06 You crash your kite in the water.
07 What if the kite loses air or the line breaks?

In the next video, I'll cover some of the key points related to the wind window, the wind direction, speed, and safety measures. So you can practice kitesurfing safer if you want to do it by yourself and after you had lessons as in both situations the same applies.
This video is part of a series related to learning by yourself. I strongly encourage you to learn the basics in a good kite school. You can find six tips for finding the right kite school in the link above or in the description.
Also, leave a comment in the comment section to keep this conversation going or say high as it's always lovely to hear from you.

Very good video, thanks! My teacher was far too sloppy and let me do my first body dragging through the water all by myself, while he was not even paying attention, busy with other students. I saw neighbouring schools go along with their student into the water. The wind was quite strong and gusty, and the water was very deep (couldn't stand). I managed to get across quite well, but I was terrified all the way, because I had no experience with dealing with problems if they would occur. He downplayed my worries when I expressed them afterwards, instead of taking them seriously. Now I see that I was right, and that it really can be dangerous to go alone into the water as a beginner, thanks to your video. You can hurt yourself or someone else... I'll discuss it the next time with my teacher.

Yes. But you are not allowed to go in the road without proving your knowledge in rules and in driving abilities. In kitesurfing this is not so. Most people seek lessons in order to gain that knowledge but some don’t. The biggest dangers in kitesurfing are not knowing the sport fully and neglecting the conditions/ability.

Hey got a question. I am looking to start teaching lessons. I have kited for 3 years now and love it. If a potential student came to you and the first thing he or she said was "How dangerous is Kiting?" Would you take them in as a student or steer them into something more safe?
@KookProofActivityCenter
@KookProofActivityCenter 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. I think information is key. So I would tell him the hidden dangers in kitesurfing. That it looks easy but that is because the people he sees practicing had the proper training and skills to make it easy. And that learning the correct way will make the sport as safe as he respects those teachings. But I would warn him of the danger of trial and error in the early beginnings as the kite is a powerful toy that can project you high and powerfully so that he would respect it.
@bailahie4235

Of course you should not steer them away, but instead compliment them for the sensible question. I think that is a question that all beginning kitesurfers should ask, both to be your own judge of how far you want to go with kitesurfing and what risks you are willing to accept for more risky maneuvers and situations - and to avoid unnecessary dangers as explained in this wonderful video.

Please elaborate on the"no board leash" part, I just finished iko1 and 2 and bought my equipment including a 2nd 130cm leash to keep as a spare, in case I will have to self rescue (ps. I have had a lot of practice body dragging, I intend to keep the board unleashed until the rescue)
@KookProofActivityCenter
@KookProofActivityCenter 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Evan, Thanks for commenting. When you mention a second 130cm leash, I’m unsure if you mean kite or board leash. If it’s a board leash, i suggest you do not use it. It will make the board slingshot in your direction if you get pulled and the board stuck in the water. If you have an extra kite leash to keep as a spare and use it for a rescue situation to keep the board, it’s ok. But you do not need it. There is a way to use the leash you have already to secure the board in case of self-rescue. On the video, i mention no board leash as if the board slingshots at you, you can lose your life depending on where it hits, and the damage can be massive.

A roll board leach should be OK though. A bit heavy and expensive but useful for beginners.
@KookProofActivityCenter
@KookProofActivityCenter Жыл бұрын
Just google roll leash kitesurf accident. It can always malfunction and get the board in your face. It can become an anchor if the kite enters into a death loop. For example, if it breaks and you do not know how to body drag, you lose the board (and that is the best-case scenario). So learn to properly body drag, and you will be fine. Leashes only in heavy surf with rocks like Punta preta, but those places are for professionals that know the risks they are taking and have the skills to avoid most of the problems, but even they had boards hit them due to the leash.

@@jamesmcgougan2003 The pop is done by edge and release. To explain it short is to go a bit downwind to gain speed. Then edge and release to pop. By your description, I guess you are going at a controlled speed, and you try to edge, resulting in a complete stop. I’ll make a video explaining this in detail.

Is roller leash equally danger?
@KookProofActivityCenter
@KookProofActivityCenter 3 жыл бұрын
Hi NK, Yes, it is still dangerous. It is a bit better than an elastic one, but it can still slingshot towards you. Another problem is if it breaks or malfunctions, you will never get back to your board as you lack the skills to get back. So the point of having the leash to keep the board can easily become a bigger problem. If you learn and practice how to body drag upwind - kzbin.info/www/bejne/joKTgq1ulKmYqZI - you can get back to the board all the time. When I started, it was board off time-so big jumps and taking the board of the feet. We had to do huge body drags as sometimes we lost the board on takeoff. I never lost a board due to not getting back in body drag. Practice with friends so if you can't get it, they can help and use the land. For example, if you are close to land, come to the beach, walk a bit, spot the board, and then go back to get it.

@@KookProofActivityCenter Awesome explanation. Thank you. P.S. is gojoe helpful in your opinion or is it another drug on progression?
@KookProofActivityCenter
@KookProofActivityCenter 3 жыл бұрын
Go joe, is more helpful. I can’t see any side effects of using it except on your wallet. It helps to flip the board and push it downwind. Some people use those arm floatation helper that kids use to put on the handle of the board to do the same effect. It’s not the same, but it can provide some help.
