The dangers of mixing Chlorine with other chemicals

In this video Chlorine (calcium hypochlorite) was mixed with Dot 3 Brake fluid (glycol-ether based). The chlorine was also mixed with engine coolant concentrate (ethylene glycol). What is demonstrated is quite a dangerous chemical reaction between these products found in the normal homeowner’s garage.

Great video ! If you have permanganate, ( an old first aid kit water purifier ) with radiator coolant it will start a fire in the same way as the pool shock and dot 3 brake fluid. 👍👍

Been there, done that. Try chlorine with pine oil. Put the powdered chlorine in an open bowl like container. Make like a volcano type crater with chlorine all around. pour the pine oil in the middle and step back. Et voila! I'm not sure but I think this allows more oxygen into the reaction as opposed to semi closed bottle efforts.

I think that it's worth mentioning that violent chemical reactions like the one in this video can occur as a result of mixing granular pool chlorine (calcium hypochlorite granules) with the wrong chemicals like brake fluid but there are also other possible reasons why it's dangerous to mix chlorine compounds like calcium hypochlorite with the wrong chemicals. For example mixing calcium hypochlorite with a strong acid like hydrochloric acid generates large amounts of chlorine gas which is a highly toxic gas and is also corrosive and a strong oxidizing agent. I know that this is probably obvious but anyway please do not mix chlorine compounds like calcium hypochlorite with strong acids like hydrochloric acid it's extremely dangerous and inhaling chlorine gas can easily be fatal.

Water acts as a heat sink so any exothermic reaction will have the heat absorbed by the larger quantity of water so it won't boil over as quickly. Doing it the other way will have a small quantity of water take in a lot of heat so it starts to boil violently
