Eddie outacted DiCaprio that year imo. I've seen roles like DiCaprio's play out a thousand times, but what Eddie did was a 1st for me. DiCaprio deserved his Oscar for Django Unchained, but didn't even get nominated, which was a snub imo. DiCaprio's role in Revenant wasn't that hard to play, I mean, many good actors could've played it just as well, but I can't imagine many actors playing Eddie's role as well as he did.

I belive decaprio could have waited for just another year. But Eddie deserved it. His acting was so beautiful in this one. The way he portray the man who was married but was not what he pretended to be all his life and then slowly explored a completely different world. His confusion over the lily's feeling and his own thinking they r two differnt people then showing the transition, realization. He deserved it.

@@rumiexpresse9049 I think the criticism comes from people who do not understand that acting is a craft. You are a good actor because you can detached yourself from who you are to tell a story. I’m going to be very honest. A lot of trans actors, not all, can’t act. Elliot page has been in the acting world for a long time, but I remember seeing The dropout, and there is a Trans woman in it. And her acting was terrible. But she was cast because she was trans. All I’m saying is that studios aren’t quick to spend money on no name actors, trans or not. When Scarlett wanted to play a trans character and trans people said no,it was more of a blow to them, because those investors only wanted to make the movie because of her name.

Source of humour to me that we are supposed to pretend transwomen are the same as women in every single way- sport, spaces, language, etc. Except for acting. Then, in the world of acting, its a notable difference. ...That is something even Monty Python wouldnt have been able to conjure up.

Can someone please explain to me - why does Lili/Einer seem to just stop loving Gerda once he becomes Lili? He was so in love with her before. Why does transitioning change that? Is this common for transgender people? Or is it because Lili seemed to have had two separate personalities (one that loved Gerda and one that didn't?), rather than only gender dysphoria? I'd really like to understand, thank you.

This is my understanding of it - there's the scene where Lili tries to dress as Einer again when Gerda says "I want my husband", but it feels completely wrong. That's the point where Lili knows there's no going back to what it was like before. I think Lili and Gerda never fell out of love spiritually, but Lili was trying to do what she thought was the right thing for Gerda, which is to distance herself because she knows she can never be "Gerda's husband Einer" ever again. In the film you're meant to presume Gerda is straight, so being in a relationship with Lili, the woman, would not have worked.

S F , Human beings are to an enormous extent (both physically and psychologically) governed by hormones and chemical levels in the brain. Transitioning procedures throw this out of kilter because everything is changing. The product which emerges is an altered being with an altered hormonal/chemical set-up -The same person with the same values etc. but the altered state changes certain structures and perceptions, especially pertaining the emotions which we are talking about. (Think of a boy at a school gate who just suddenly one morning tells his mum not to kiss him goodbye in front of his mates anymore. He is going through a growing phase - It's a changed state but he still loves his mum.) As you know, love can undergo a metamorphosis without vanishing. What did change as Einer changed, was the structure of the love affair and also the way he saw it. But it never stopped.

I think because this takes place early in the 20th century(1930s), being trans wasn't a very well known or fully understood thing back then. If anything people of that time would simply assume he was just being gay. So Einer himself probably didn't quite know else how to describe their case other than he felt like a different person entirely as Lily

LILI ELBE (a sonnet dedicated to a most courageous woman, Lili Elbe) It’s where the bogs are in THE DANISH GIRL. It is Vejle where Einar dropped his roots. Black branches that are Sunday school girl’s curl. Five trees, to be exact, that bore no fruits. But then Lili was born, fruits galore, ripe. Einar was gone, to the bogs I suppose, maybe always to be in him, his gripe. It was Lili all along, frilly clothes. I love people who display bravery in the face of adversity, doomed fall. They rise above the bogs to seek savory white-laced light from Heaven’s Gate; peaceful gall. Live on Lili; God has blessed your soft heart. Blessed mine, too, because of you; out-loud art.

This movie is brilliant and beautifully sensitive , it's subtle differences in how trans people are , and how it affects people they love is touching , people may mistakenly believe that it's a cliche , but as far as trans is not really been discussed or filmed in the mainstream media for some time , this was a very delicate way to reopen the conversation about Trans people. People are quick to become prejudice against others because of ignorance and lack of understanding. Not everything that went into this film was original , but it was executed gracefully and as gently as it could , but The crying game is the opposite side of this world and would be perfect for those who prefer the realism and gritty, defeatist Cliched film of this subject to The artful and subsequent dramatics of this movie.

Saying that “he’s terrible”. Yes, he is. But having this confusion, it’s not as easy as it looks like. He was broken, THEY were broken, but the way Gerda sacrificed her love for his happiness is what makes this scene amazing. Most people focused on how bad he was as a husband. But the main point here is that when you love someone, truly love someone, their happiness, will always come first. She understands what her husband is going through, and instead of avoiding him, of feeling disgusted by him, she showed him that Lili or Einar, he is normal. That she would love her even if it breaks her. I don’t think calling someone a “horrible” person for being confused or for being torn because of their sexuality, is right. Being gay, coming out, it’s the most terrifying for gay people.

I understand, but no one is saying they're a horrible person for being confused and torn on their sexuality and gender. People are saying cheating on a loving and caring partner, in any context, is cruel and wrong. It's making a conscious decision to put your confusion above their wellbeing and trust in you. They should have separated before that happened. I understand she chooses to stay and be supportive for a time, but that doesn't validate what happened.

Everyone in the comments saying "being transgender isn't an excuse to cheat", this isnt being trans, this is more like an alter i guess, or being gender fluid, i still don't think it justifies cheating, but this isn't being transgender.

No. She did not deserve to be put in the Actress in a Supporting Role category, so she won by category fraud. She easily could have been nominated for Actress in a Leading Role but would have lost to Brie Larson. On a completely separate note, I think she should have won an Oscar for her supporting performance in Ex Machina the same year. She was astounding in that film.

Does he have DID or something? They’re talking about Lili and Einar like they’re 2 different people. Transgender doesn’t mean different personalities, it’s just feeling like a different gender??? I don’t understand why it seems like a multiple personality disorder

According to the words in this scene, the way he speaks about himself as Lily in 3rd person, looks more like split personality, doesn't it? The way he changes when he gets back to male look, should that be like that? I mean, everyone is talking about this film as an ode to transgender. But this looks more like psychiatric problems, which, probably could appear on the basis of his transgender nature or maybe on the basis of other circumstances in his life. At least in this dialog this all looks weirdly insane.

Both gave such emotional performances but the main issue that I have with this film is that it presumes that you're identified as female just by putting on a dress and wearing make-up when there's a whole lot more to it than that!

SJMJ91 That's not what it was trying to say. Einar dressing as a woman helped him realize that it's time for his true gender to shine. You see the transition that happens. Lili has her own mind and her own personality in the mind of Einar. Einar dressing as a woman was a way to let Lili shine and introduce herself to the world. I love the way Eddie Redmayne put it. He said that Lili putting on these very formal suits and it was as if Einar became this exoskeleton that Lili puts up to the world so that people wouldn't treat her badly once she fully embraced being a real woman. I think Eddie did a fantastic job of showing that.

Matter of cheating is a subject that seems to come very often in these comments. I may not have a straight answer but from my perspective, what Lili, and by extension Einar did to Gerda was wrong. I am transgender myself, and I can say that being that does not directly effect your affections towards others. What I'd say is that due to the circumstances Lili (Einar) has faced throughout life and during this time, that being what she was was much greater a confusion than you would think today. Generally, it is acceptable that a man should be with a woman, and so as Lili finds herself to be a woman, trying to fit into her gender role was understandable. Now, circumstances for everyone's relationships are always different, and while your standards are still there ofcourse, in the past it was much harder to do anything outside of the usual. The relationship Einar has with Gerda is as far as I can tell a heteronormative, monogamous one, but when Lili is brought into the picture that line becomes blurred. So no, being confused about yourself does not justify your poor treatment of others, but atleast I hope that someone here can better understand the circumstances presented and that the situation can make more sense. (Yes I am four years late to say much.)
